New York City

By beskhu3epnm

New York City is the largest city in the United States and one of the world's major global cities. Located in the state of New York, the city has a population of over 8.2 million within an area of 321 square miles (approximately 830 km²) making it the most densely populated major city in North America. With a population of 18.7 million, the New York Metropolitan Area is one of the largest urban areas in the world.

However, in SC4, it will be up to you to decide whether or not to replicate this giant, or to simply create something new.

This map was created using new 16bit technology that makes maps 100% accurate. Created entirely from 16bit PNG greyscale (JPEG is 8bit), the map never drops below 16bits of data. It is spaced for 16m per pixel, 1:1 in the SC4 world. The elevations are 100% accurate as per DEM data. This is an exact replica!

The map measures 7 large tiles wide by 10 large tiles long (1793x2561). A config is included in the package, however don’t limit yourself creatively, as it is all large tiles.

The various harbors and landings in the city were represented in the DEM data, and therefore are still present. They only take a few seconds to remove, however. Do so at your own risk!!

The Columbus Terrain Textures were used when opening/saving the city tiles in game, but any terrain mod can used to do the same.

The PEG Brigantine Water Mod was used when opening/saving the city tiles in game, but any terrain mod can used to do the same.

Make sure to visit our NHP Map Forum for posting your thoughts, suggestions, requests and comments + sneak peaks of future maps by the New Horizons Productions Team. Also, there are some much better screenshots of this map available in the thread. Enjoy this map, and don’t forget to comment & rate, even if you hate it!

As you can see, the map contains parts of New Jersey and Staten Island. Due to the shape of Manhattan Island, it map be difficult to place sea walls, and such, as the land does not follow tiles uniformly... Hope you guys enjoy it!

The already large size of the map was taken into consideration here..... This would have been too large for slow computers to include all areas! I sourced population data from wikipedia, I hope it is right!

Wikipedia has many contradicting statements regarding the population of the New York Metro. One article says 18 million, another says 22 million, and the highest I've seen was 24 million. Anyway, THIS MAP ROCKS!

The depressions in the terrain actually showed up, but the elevations weren't low enough to accomodate the lakes. You will have to plop them using one of the ploppable packs from PEG.

A very accurate map of New York. If only you released this map when I started recreating New York, I'm tempted to start over again using this map. Excellent work!

The beam of light I just placed on there for decorative purposes representing the WTC site on Manhattan island. It doesn't show in game, and is somewhat of a memorial... I can re-load the zip, although I am not sure what the problem is, as it works fine for me!! Check back a little later. Thanks for the comments!

Looks great, but there is one inaccuracy. You've got north pointing the wrong way. Unlike commonly thought, the grid of manhattan is not algined with the compas. It's actually tilted to the east by about 30 degrees.

I tilted this map 29 degrees to allow for easier building up of the island. In my experience, it was easier to draw North/South streets using this method!! That being said, I guess it isn't "perfect" per se...

Nice... but i think you should have the beam of light anyway, incase anybody wants to put the World Trade center in.

I decided to try it out before rating it (having been disappointed before by maps that looked good in the screenshot), and I must say: this is fantastic.

This is an AMAZING map, but honestly, there must be about 200 large city squares within the map. Lol, it will take us 5-10 years to fill it at all in. Still, it's really an amazing job. Who loves NYC enough here to take it all the way??

AZK1013 - That line is a 'beam of light represents the WTC site on Manhattan island. It doesn't show in game, and is somewhat of a memorial...' quoted from beskhu3epnm.
