Is there a better way to start adventure trough Manhattan, than to visit a theater? I present to you Midtown theater. I was fascinated with the simplicity and charm of this Art Deco jewel. Working on this BAT I have learned so much and it grew on to me. So here's my progress on it:

Hanson, it's Midtown Theater, turned Metro Theater, turned Urban Outfitters. It's on Upper West Side between 99th and 100th on Broadway.

Thank you Amthaak my friend for your continuous support and all the help you provided me with.

Thank you Aaron and Sgt.Pepper, here comes the update.

Simfox thank you for your kind words.

Well this is my progress, I added bunch of small details hoping they makes a difference, and I hope you'll tell me if I need to make spacing bigger on red arrows part and on the yellow arrow part are the letter ok, or they would be better visible if they were textured, not modeled.

    mt3fp.pngmt3fpa.png

Now, I need to ask you for help. I have two major problems. First of all I can't figure out roof junk. It seems like there's a lot of it, but judging from the Bing and Google earth, I can't determine what is it. If anyone has better perception, I'd greatly appreciate help. The address is 2626 Broadway, and here's a link to Bing.

Second, I would ask anyone if they have a link to a good tutorial on making textures in PS, I would be very thankful.

Feel free to comment and suggest anything.

Vlasky, to me when it comes to roofs like that, Spa is a perfect example. The green arrows pointed to the roof junk on the bing map picture is the same type of roof junk that's on Spa building. When it comes to tutorials I can't say. The only one I really looked at and need to look at again is the tutorial SimHoTToDDy made. It's on how to un-tile  textures. Link

Thank you Aaron and Pierre for helping me figure out roof junk. But, I had to improvise and this is what I came up with. Burt somehow it looks cheap and unrealistic. I'm not sure it should stay this way. Also, even if I rework it , and make it look better, it might be too much distinctive. The alternative would be to do something like nofunk did on his series of small w2w shops. What do you think?

Also here's a picture of front and canopy with our latest film circa 1933. 1.gif

When I loook at Google Earth it looks like the two shafts are stacked. Techincally that makes sense too: one would be the supply of conditioned air and the other would be for to-be-conditioned air.

A similar installations seems to be on the left front corner.

I don't know much about all that roofjunk stuff but I want to say that I very much like the details that you put into that nice building 44.gif Can't wait to see textures.

"Is it not cruel to let our city die by degrees, stripped of all her proud monuments, until there will be nothing left of all her history and beauty to inspire our children? If they are not inspired by the past of our city, where will they find the strength to fight for her future? Americans care about their past, but for short term gain they ignore it and tear down everything that matters. Maybe… this is the time to take a stand, to reverse the tide, so that we won't all end up in a uniform world of steel and glass boxes." - Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

The roof junk looks good for such a building so I wouldn't worry about it right now. I love this Art-Deco Movie theater. 9.gif I'm wondering what you're going to do for the areas that are W2W.

The ventilation tubing looks a little too squat to me (at least relative to Google earth). Try making it more square and then lifting if off off of the roof surface (just a little, don't go crazy). You wouldn't want your utilities just sitting on the roof where the elements can get to them easier.

Just study the image an Aaron's post and you should be able to pull out a few more details as well.

    Lookin' good!

Thank you Todd, I was going to say something about the vents need to be more squared, but I also wanted to post a picture up, but I could not find the perfect one for me to relate to.16.gif

Vlasky, your roof junk is looking nice just fix it up a little and you should be close to textureing.4.gif

Seraf and AlexandrosB13 thank you, but I'm sorry to inform you that it'll be a while till this thater gets it's textures as I still don't know enough about making them. But don't vorry, I'll work on some more projects in the meantime 1.gif

Brandon, I don't have palns to model anything else on w2w walls, but if you hav any suggestions I'd like to hear them and maybe I can add something.

Todd and Aaron, thank you, I studied the pictures, both RL and spa's, and I reworked utilities and tubes. Hope you like it. And also If I need to lift them up from the ground some more, tell me. I lifted them about 20cm for now.

Special thanks to Hyronymus who helped me enourmusly in figuring out what is on the roof and what's the layout of those intertwining tubes.

Here's the progress I've made, reworked tubes HVACs and holders and subtle angles. Point out if anything needs to be corrected. next I will add those little detail that make the roof alive 1.gif Also a top render just for reference to original image. Shadows explain quite a bit 1.gif

Looking good vlasky. And can you make one of the vent shafts cross the other on a higher level than the other? Something like in my quick sketch.overcrossingairshafts.jpg

EDIT: something I realise now when looking at the fire escape 1.gif. You can lay some pathing on the roof towards the escape ladder, leading to an (imaginative) fire escape hatch in the roof.

Hyronymus: As you can see on the picture of the newest update, I've adopted your idea and made both overlapping shafts as you drew and added fire escape hatch on place where it might acctually be. Thank you for helping me figure out this roof, without you, it wouldn't look like this.

Amthaak: Thanks to you and comments of other people here I really feel like I'm doing a good job.

Aaron Graham: Feel free to suggest something if you feel it should be on the roof.

    Update:

Well after a quick break and arrival of Simtropolis 7, it's time to show my small progress on Midtown theater. I feel like the modeling is almost complete. What do you think?

    45.gif I believe I've been missing out.

Looking good Vlasky! I believe you are indeed close to finishing(modeling wise ;)). The real fun will begin with texturing!

The detail looks really good, what is that thing on the side on the building, it's gray, is it a vent?

I think that I feel inclined to agree with you. ;) By the way, the roof junk is among the best I've seen because it's so unique. I can't wait to see what this BAt will look like once it's all textured. [Mom mode] I hope you keep backups, because losing this beauty would really be a tragedy! [/Mom mode]
