tutorial EPIC Technique for Centered City Screenshots
CorinaMarie posted a topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
See here for a much easier way to do this. Old tutorial: Exact Position In City Technique for Centered City Screenshots (This is useful for before and after pictures.) This is a technique I discovered a long time ago and both @Cyclone Boom and I use it. We've been intending to write up a little tutorial for it and I'm just now getting around to it. The basic idea is that peeps do have incremental saves of their cities and might at some point want to show before and after pictures. Here's an image I posted a year or so ago and I was curious what that area looks like now. Cori's Farmhouse in the Year 884: I go to the same location in Year 1924 of my current play version, press Ctrl+X to bring up the cheat dialog box and type in terrainquery then press Enter: ^ Note: Neither this cheat command nor the upcoming sizeof require the Extra Cheats DLL, but it's ok to have that mod installed. To activate said Terrain Query, click the Query button: Edit Start: @Cyclone Boom has found this should be done in the Zones DataView. Sometimes when centering on the coordinates and having the trees and buildings visible, it can be off by 1 to several pixels in the final screenshots. When using the Zones View, this little glitch does not occur and the images will match up pixel for pixel. End Edit. Next mouse over a location where the image is to be centered. Write down the X and Y coordinates. (In this case X=2143.9 and Y=2716.2.) Right click to center the city there: This gets it really close, but it's way too easy to wiggle the mouse a fraction of an inch and not really be centered exactly where it should be. So, Ctrl+X again and type in sizeof 13 in the cheat box: After you press Enter, the city will be zoomed in more than you can do with the mouse scroll. It'll get all pixelated, but that's ok. Find your exact position again for X and Y and right click. Because you have some wiggle room where the X and Y doesn't change, this'll be more precise: Save the city: As soon as the save finishes, the zoom is reset: Exit the game and copy in your prior saved version of the city. (Be sure you have a separate saved copy of the current one, ofc.) Center that roughly the same as the other image: ^ This won't be lined up perfect yet. That comes next. Do the terrainquery and sizeof 13 cheats, then find the exact position for X and Y that you wrote down, and right click the mouse to center this one the same as the other: ^ Note: You can use a larger number than 13 (up to 64) for sizeof. I picked 13 for this tutorial as a balance between precision and still being able to make out the location visually. It is the X and Y coordinates which are the important part. Save the city and now you are ready to grab the screenshot(s). I did several zooms for each picture and then re-numbered them so they are in Before and After sequence. (To best see how precise this method is, click one of the pictures below and use your right and left arrow keys to flip between them.) An additional use for the sizeof cheat is to use sizeof 0 to zoom out one more notch when you want to see more of a large city tile.- 10 Replies

50 Years Without Government: Before and After
drocca posted a City Journal entry in What Happens when you Withdraw All Government Services?
I have reached the halfway point of my experiment, at least that's my current plan (I may go longer than a century, or shorter if everyone leaves before then), but just wanted to compare Kuzcek as it was with an active government at its peak (right before the government shutdown) vs. 50 years without government services. Since the government shut down on January 1, Year 40, this is a comparison of October 29, Year 39 vs. December 17, Year 89. Even though there has been massive loss of population and quality of life, I'm surprised the city is even still a thing at this point. Residential Population: Before: 38,168 (approx. 19,000 R$, 15,000 R$$, 4,000 R$$$) - 50% R$, 39% R$$, 11% R$$$ After: 12,045 (approx. 10,600 R$, 1,350 R$$, 85 R$$$) - 88% R$, 11% R$$, <1% R$$$ Change: -68% total population (-44% R$, -91% R$$, -98% R$$$) In the 50-year period, Kuzcek went from having a relatively balanced mix of all wealth levels to becoming predominated by low-wealth. It also underwent a massive drop in population in all wealth levels, with a drop of more than two-thirds total. Commercial Population: Before: 21,726 (approx. 2,600 CS$, 4,200 CS$$, 1,500 CS$$$, 7,900 CO$$, 5,600 CO$$$) - 12% CS$, 19% CS$$, 7% CS$$$, 36% CO$$, 26% CO$$$) After: 4,981 (approx. 3,000 CS$, 1,450 CS$$, 180 CS$$$, 380 CO$$, no CO$$$) - 60% CS$, 29% CS$$, 4% CS$$$, 8% CO$$, no CO$$$) Change: -77% total population (+15% CS$, -65% CS$$, -88% CS$$$, -95% CO$$, -100% CO$$$) A massive shift to lower-wealth businesses corresponding to the shift to low-wealth residents, and a shift from a balanced office-dominated economy to one almost exclusively service-based. Of the individual wealth/zone classes, only CS$ grew. Industrial Population: Before: 7,065 (approx. 2,300 I-D, 4,800 I-HT) - 32% I-D, 68% I-HT After: 1,226 (approx. 1,200 I-D, 27 I-HT) - 98% I-D, 2% I-HT Change: -83% total population (-48% I-D, -99% I-HT) Dirty industry was little affected until a fire on November 5-6, Year 64 wiped out almost half of their businesses. High-tech industry, once the dominant form of industry, virtually disappeared altogether, making industry the zone type most drastically affected by the shutdown. Crime: Before: approx. 1.5 per month, 95% chance of arrest (Crime rate: 3.93 per 100,000) After: approx. 11 per month, no chance of arrest (Crime rate: 91.32 per 100,000) Change: 7.33 times as high crime, -100% arrests (Crime rate: 23.24 times as high!) With no police around, the population went wild. Crime actually peaked in the first few years after the government shutdown before declining along with the population. Nevertheless, Kuzcek is still 23 times more dangerous than it was fifty years ago. Lock your doors, Kuzcekians. Commute time: Before: 23 minutes After: 92 minutes Change: 4 times as high When the roads have effectively been destroyed by fifty years without maintenance, it's going to take a lot longer than it will than it did on Kuzcek's smooth asphalt in "the good old days". Power usage: Before: 10,110 kWh After: 8,871 kWh Change: -12% total power used Water usage: Before: 67,116 cu m3 After: 65,376 cu m3 Change: -3% total water used I'm not quite sure how this works. I would have expected something like an 80% drop in utility use. Air Pollution: Before: approx. 97 After: 59 Change: -39% total air pollution Finally! Something good came out of the government shutdown! Not that it was a problem before anyway, the pollution was always contained away from the residential/commercial/high tech industry zones. I guess this is the silver lining? Sure, the city's turned to crap, but the air... is slightly cleaner! Yay! Garbage: Before: Approx. 14,000 tons, all safely in a landfill After: Approx. 295,000 tons, all in the streets Over half a billion pounds of garbage in the streets, that's 48,983 pounds per person. That's almost the weight of 14 top-trim 2011 Honda Accords worth of garbage... per person, in the street! Imagine living in a house of three and having 42 Honda Accords worth of trash in your yard? Education: Before: 183 After: 23 Change: -87% / 160 EQ points 160 EQ points is considered good for a city. That's what these people have lost since the last school bell rang 50 years ago. Life expectancy: Before: 90 years After: 51 years Change: -43% / 39 years To the people living here now, Kuzcek has been abandoned for a lifetime. 39 years loss is a heck of a lot. If you went back 39 years, the Atari 2600 was state of the art. 13 years longer than I've been alive. Budget: Before: $18,645 income / $14,999 expenses ($3,636 profit) After: $6,576 income / $2,443 expenses ($4,133 profit) In the first few decades after government shutdown, I was making tons of money. Now the population loss is catching up. Funds: Before: $688,833 After: $5,705,294 I could fix this place up and make it a utopia. Mayor Rating: Before: 75 After: 17 Change: -58 points I'm surprised the Sims of Kuzcek don't outright hate me. -
And now is September! The work in general for this year has brought little results and continues to this days. There are already built microdistricts: Mėdla (captured with little town Iknota): Opila: and Ekli: The settlement in them continues to this day. After an unpleasant history in Virapila, where, after settling into the district without any fee, an unprecedented rampant crime took place, so it was decided to sell apartments here, however, at preferential prices. Other microdistricts are still constructing, so they will be done apr. in November. On the territory of the free city of Kištu, as well as in adjacent areas (garda's), the D6 road were completely rebuilt to the new motorway B18 in the south side from the city. The north side is almost done too. Here you can see the new junction Ekli - Saluōka - B18: Here is shown the small town Salaspila with a new constructed highway B18 in the north: And in conclusion of this issue - a photo of a new railway to Satra for 12 kilometers from Kištu:

Kištu-1986 (After the communism) - "Construction Time Again"
jakis posted a City Journal entry in Dzingalia
July. Since the last issue, it has been found suitable areas for construction of new microdistricts, and even managed to quickly start the construction. In Medla, almost all houses are built, in Ackley and Opila construction is also almost completed. We will return to them in September, by that time, there the construction will be fully completed. Now for your attention I will represent other new microdistricts. Ōrbočka: Jasurku (in the South) and Tedė (in the North) near the Tedė Šiluminiu Elėktrostātuma (Tedė Thermal Power Plant): Sota: Rialu (in the North) and Liloāna (in the South) near the Ziėkālps-Piėtiu (Ziėkālps-Southern) built in 1978: Instead of building tram lines, it has been decided to build bus stops for now: it will allow in the future to determine by actual traffic the need for a tram line to a certain microdistrict, and also where and how it will pass. ___ My favourite album, which can approach the topic and fit for then time: although it was created in the summer of 1983, I think it can be suitable for 1986. -
It's April now. Last month the construction began: under construction are the neighborhoods Ekli: ... Mėdla: ... and Opila: Totally they give that quantity of square meters, which covers only 39% of the plan for housing construction. This means it is necessary to urgently seek new areas for construction. There is a multi-level intersection of the railway. The one that comes from the west, by the bottom of the junction and goes to the southeast, it is a new railway to Satra:

28th of February. A week ago, there's planned a warming on this days, but actually now it's still laying snow and -17C. Interested people are really waiting for the beginning of this spring, when it finally will be possible to start the main work. Tomorrow already comes the calendar spring. Two overpasses of road D6 are prepared for demolishing, one of which is in the photo. Next, bulk works are planned, but they are not carried out until a plus temperature occurs. For the same reason, works are suspended on the construction of the railway line to Satra. Over the winter, carefully planned where and how will be built 3 new microdistricts for the housing program. The works are not carried out for the same reason as the bulk works too, but nevertheless negotiations are already underway with the owners of the farms that are located on the territory of future housing complexes. Further, the demolition of these structures and the preparation of the territory for construction are being prepared. Here is the territory of the microdistrict Ekli: Here is the future Opila This is the territory for the Medla microdistrict, which is almost ready for construction. At the moment, 3 micro districts are being accurately planned. The other microdistricts of the housing construction program will be planned during the construction of the first three microdistricts.

The 1986 came. It's January now. Relatively warm, -5С, the snow is laying. Recently, such development programs as the agro-economic and industrial programs were announced for 1986 year. Also there were are new: housing program and transportation program. So, this year Kištu participates only in these 2 new programs. The city got a plan to build houses for 100,000 people, then rebuild the roads B7 and D6 into the motorways and build the railway line to Satra. So, now work has begun on the restructuring of the road D6 into the motorway. First of all, the reserve road of the rebuilding road was started for the time of rebuilding. While it's winter and temperatures are expected to be above zero only by the spring, so only the demolition of road junctions and dismantling will take place for now. The constructions are planned only by the spring. At the future railway intersection, a gravel pillow has already been sprinkled, and soon there will be installation of tracks. Beginning of the housing building is also planned only by the spring. Coming soon!

Hello there, after 2 years. During this time the city has changed, but it can not be said that that are strong changes. Let me start with the fact that after my last post, in the country, as well as in the whole city, there was a giant wave of decommunization. In the city were renamed approximately 500 objects: streets, squares, boulevards, avenues, schools, hospitals, tram stations and much more. On Lenin Square (Lėnina placa), which now bears the name of the Housing Square (Namiu placa), the monument to V.Lenin was demolished. Then, at the end of 1983 Dzingalian government decided to make an agricultural development program for 1984 and decided to start from the cities. Kištu got into this program. Now 38.9 thousand of people work in the agricultural sector all over the city, when before this programm this value was hardly equal to a only thousand. In addition, new roads and overpasses have been built for the needs of the working people. This is a satellite snapshot of the city and its suburbs: And this is a map of the city's road infrastructure: Here, all the changes were recorded for 1983-1984. It is noteworthy that the images (taken in May 1984) are completely relevant so far even for now, November 1985. This is because by 1985 the city decided not to include in the program of agricultural development due to the lowest unemployment percent in the country. Also, by the same reason, the city was excluded from the program of industrial development in 1985. The city is very lack of manpower. Therefore, representatives from this city were promoting the launch of the mass housing program for 1986. And recently, on September 25, preparations began for the introduction of the 1986 housing program. For these needs on October 29, was developed the first own project of a series of houses for mass construction, named NM-1 (yyeeah, exactly this). But for now this is all that is known about housing plans. As for many things in the city, nothing has changed in these 2 years. The same can be judged by the two schemes of the city tram: one made almost immediately after the country gained independence: the other was made in the same year, 1985, in the summer.

Kisztow-1983 (After the communism - pilot 3) - Sights of this town
jakis posted a City Journal entry in Dzingalia
Hello! Today is the 29th of September. There have passed many days since that momentous day, and the lives of local residents have long been returned to normal. All they are working, go to the theater, to restaurants, to shoping at supermarkets. In three words - they are living. And they live a life much the same as before. But not for the authorities. After independence, the money stopped coming out of the capital - the Cenin, because now their capital - is the Viszni Berag. In the dependent times, Dzingalia was a relatively backward republic, among other republics of Latagnia. Agricultural lands were located in the most southern territory of the present Dzingalia. That the reaped from those fields after independence, was not enough to feed properly even the capital. But need to feed properly the whole country. Dzingalia requested a loan from the League of Developing States to buy enough grain not only to feed the country but in the next spring to plant anything what remained. All that can help the Kisztow for Dzingalia - is a Machine-Building Plant, which produces trams. Those trams can be sold to another cities abroad. Of course, throughout the Dzingalia there are enough factories to earn money to normaly survive in the winter, but this money is not enough to enable the country to develop. It was decided that taxes will not be raised, but all the products went up by 5%, which was not very good impact on the mood of the population. Two days ago, the Kisztow's tranportwas was sold for 23000000 dollars (or 15 million Ztat, by local money). This are shuttle trains, trams, buses, rails, stops, the contact network. All that state can is only produce, sell manufactured abroad and wait for spring, when country can start to develop agriculture. By Latagnia, Dzingalia was lagged behind in development for 10 years, and the events of recent days are suggesting that Dzingalia will fall behind for another one or two years from the developed world. And all that I can do, while the country lagged behind in development, is to show the sights of Kisztow. So, welcome! Here is Oldcity square (Staraměscká placa) where is located a small market, where residents or small businesses can sell what they had grown in their gardens. The market appeared almost immediately after Dzingalia became independent, and it's the same - 1983. Earlier in this place was nothing, just an area paved by cobblestone, the same as around the market. To the south you can see the old town hall, which now functions as a church. Until the 1578 there sat the Senior Pope. Functions of the Senior Pope were almost the same as that of the Mayor of the city after 1578. In 1578 there was a Church Revolution, when the indignant masses throughout Latagnia overthrew the King and all the church leaders, who ruled the lands of the country (cities, regions, villages). It was declared that the from this day only those could manage the lands of this country, who have nothing with religion. Now a small part of this building is a museum "Old Town Hall" ("Stará Ratuša"). The Middle Town Hall ("Siarědniá Ratuša") is located near the church, to the east of the square, and you can see it. This Middle Town Hall served from 1578 to 1752. In 1752 it was decided that this building is not enough and decided to create a New Town Hall (about which will be discussed later), make it placed away from all churches and a new square for this New Town Hall. Now in the Middle Town Hall is located the Main Historical Museum of the city. Near is a tram station "Staraměscká placa" of 5 and 6 lines. Here you can see the Oldcity (Starý Grad). Unfortunately, there are some buildings that have not survived to the present day, and in their place were built new ones, such as the building of hospital, school, office building with an observation deck. The oldest building in this place was built in 1273 and it is, of cource, the Church, or the "Old Town Hall". Most new building - is in 1982, this is an office building. Here you can see the Old Water Tower ("Stará vadaciagová věža"). This building was builded in 1685. Finally, here you can see the building of the New Town Hall ("Nová ratuša"), which is located 250 meters from the Middle Town Hall. This building had been built from 1752 to 1754 and still performs its function. However, apart from the mayor's office, the 40% of this building occupies the Government of the Eastern Dzingalia. Shortly about that. Dzingalia is divided into two main parts: Western and Eastern. So, the capital of Western Dzingalia is Viszni Berag (and this city is a capital of whole Dzingalia), and Eastern is Kisztow. Also, Dzingalia is divided into regions ("Ziemi"), but speech is not quite about that. Here is a New Water Tower (Nová Vadaciagová věža). Built in 1755. In the center of this picture is a Suburb Park. It was built in 1798 on the orders of Alexandr Kauniszkiu, a former mayor of the city. He ruled the city from 1796 to 1815. There is a fact that differs him from all the other mayors, that he loved nature more than others, so his goal was to make the city the most "green" in Dzingalia. Here you can see a unique park designed in the form of a ring that encircles the Old City. Its name - Round Park ("Kruglový park"). It is also a merit of Alexandr Kauniszkiu. Although the creating has just begun only from 1799, and it was built right up to 1811. And this is Prince's Palace (Kniažeskí Dvorěc) with the Grand Princely Park (Boljšý Kniažeskí Park). The palace was built in 1817 and was the residence of the prince - Adri Klianiszka, who loved to visit this city and to walk, both in Round Park, and the Grand Princely Park. Behind the palace is the forest and field, where the prince loved to hunt and, just, ride a horse. Here is a Kisztow Philarmonia. Was built in 1819. Here in the center is the building trade exchange. Built in 1835. Now is the largest shopping mall in the city with boutiques, restaurants and other shopping pavilions. This is a Central Railway Station. Was third in Latagnia. Built in 1857. This is a Western coal power station. It was built in 1884. It works today. And this one is a North coal power station. Was built in 1885. It works today too. This is the pride of the city. To the left of the center of the image is a Museum of Tram Transport of Kisztow. It was the first depot in the city, which served horsecar, then trams. It was built in 1901. Since this year began the development of the tram as a transport in the city. On the right is a new depot, which was built in 1936. Currently the city has 11 lines of transport, 4 depots, 112 stations, one museum. First park has these cars: then, after electrification of this transport, this: then such as here: And finally a year ago, these cars were produced by local tram manufacture: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ This is a Television Tower of the city with the management buildings near. It is located in the north-west of the city, in an area called Makonaupila. Built in 1975. The first houses were built in the area Makonaupila since 1952. Near the TV Tower is located a concert stage, where are taking place rock-festivals and other musical events or writers evenings. That's a bigest square of this city of squares. It's Lenina Square. Were built, when Dzingalia were under Latagnian communistic government, in 1978. Now it has no any cultural value. It's located in south-east of the city, in the area called Ziekalps. First house here were built in 1975. Now Ziekalps is a biggest sleeping quarter not only of the city, but of Dzingalia. There are living 20% of population of Kisztow. But we digress from the topic. In the image lower is the center of Lenina Square closer: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Here is a branch of National Library. This design were very much liked by local architectors, so their projects were built more such libraries across the city. The such building was built in 1982. And finally here is an office building with observation deck in the last floor. Were built in 1982 instead of old decrepit building, which were demolished in 1976, so 6 years this place were empty. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Replies: -
Hello! Today is the 30th of August of 1983 and that day is a great day for Dzingalia! Today in 8:27 President of Dzingalia Saul Grizhishka (earlier he were a Head of Dzingalian republic of Latagnia) signed a package of documents in Vishni Berag (the capital of Dzingalia) by which Dzingalia will separate from Latagnia unilaterally. By 9:00 in Kisztow people started to gathering near the building of the City Hall. In the photo (which was made from a helicopter at 9:47) below you can see the flag of the Dzingalian Republic of Latagnia over the City Hall. The people who are near the City Hall they are holding flags of independent Dzingalia. 9:58, a man came on the roof of City Hall, pulled the old flag, threw it into the well-yard and started to raise a new. Everyone is happy! It's new life for Dzingalia! 11:28, became known that all countries had recognized the independence of Dzingalia, except Krasnomorye and, obviously, Latagnia. 12:01, photo-panorama of Jaspers street August 30th were declared as the day of independence. Today, is the holiday, there will be concerts, festivals. 14:58, Dzingalia adopted a new constitution, which were secretly prepared in advance. Dzingalia has taken the path of democracy! 16:14, Vishni Berag made the first in the country operation of privatizing. New company called D-Line privatized whole aircraft, sea ports and railway in Dzingalia. It's the first company of country. 16:48, began work on the creation of the border between Dzingalia and Latagnia. 17:17, Mayor of Vishni Berag Radzislaw Gradar made a speech from the trubune: "Today is the first day of a new life for the whole of Dzingalia! Unfortunately, on the way to a better life there are challenges that we will must to overcome very soon. These difficulties will be different, but no matter how bad the situation is, you should remember that soon will be much better! And because of this a life worth living!" Hello there! Now is 29 of August, 1983. Dzingalia is just a part of Latagnia, in which is the communism. Yesterday was a Day of Dzingalia. On this day, in almost the whole of Dzingalia held concerts, rallies, marches, but all of this were brutally dispersed by the troops, who immediately arrived from Cenin (the capital of Latagnia). There was given the order to do with the citizens, what would the troops want. As a result, 63 people died, 178 were located in hospitals. Five people are in Cenin, they are being tortured. Including Dzingalian musician from the concert in Kisztow. Their condition is unknown. In Dzingalia is growing separatist sentiment. Here's North-West suburb of Kisztow in the night (by the July, 1981). That's satellite image of Kisztow (by April,1983) The transport map of Kisztow (by the same date).
