Anyone else having trouble uploading images to steam workshop?
aable replied to ReticentDaikaiju's topic in Cities: Skylines Modding - Open Discussion
Same for me. Seems like the workshop does weird stuff like this every couple of days, I would expect to it be back to normal sooner or later. -

These are really nice. Good work! -
csl patch 1.0.7b Patch update.
aable replied to Yayie's topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
Yup, we've officially switched back to 1.06. Everything is back to normal for me. Glad they were able to fix that quickly. Hopefully the amount of variability with all of the mods out there don't make it completely impossible for them to make stable official updates. -
csl patch 1.0.7b Patch update.
aable replied to Yayie's topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
I managed to load a save but all custom assets were disappeared and my framerate totally tanked down to 2 fps until the game eventually crashed. A lot of other people are getting this: http://prntscr.com/6lzdpf So yeah this patch pretty much broke everything. Hoping they can just release an ctrl z on this patch soon. -
Feindbolds Buildings

Love that one. Is it based on a real building? -
Feindbolds Buildings
aable replied to Feindbold's topic in Cities: Skylines Modding - Open Discussion
The 'Control Building Level Up' mod just added a district-wide level control function, if you get it and set high density residential to a limit of 2 or 3 you'll get relatively old looking districts with lots of Feinbolds buildings that will stay that way. -

Beautiful work! I would love to see the first one as either residential or commercial. -
Buildings by Dubai Skyscraper
aable replied to Dubai Skyscraper's topic in Cities: Skylines Modding - Open Discussion
Cool, I'm glad someone's made 432 park. I would prefer a ploppable version of it though, I wouldn't want that thing popping up in random spots all over my city. -
Noticed this condo in Arlington, VA the other day, I thought it was rather ugly, even by DC area standards:

I saw on reddit that apparently the only nonwhite person in the whole game is a cim who plays on the basketball court. I haven't independently confirmed this but if true it's a little embarrassing. I suppose the Finns making the game just didn't think too much about it, but it would be nice to have more diversity for sure.

Heblem's Cities:Skylines builds
aable replied to Heblem's topic in Cities: Skylines Modding - Open Discussion
Just tested out the NYTB, saw that you put it on the workshop... the textures are pretty good, but the whole thing was very bright for me, it looked white. I would also scale it down a little, it was way bigger than any of the other skyscrapers I've downloaded from the workshop. Needs a LOD too so it doesn't degrade when you zoom out. Just my two cents, you are doing work that I don't know how to do and it looks great! This is one of my favorite buildings and I'm glad someone is working on it. It's not an easy one for sure. -

You just can't say that. A game that offers you full 3D in your cities, modable, where people can build and share what they've done... CSL has limits but it blows SC4's limits away. CSL is what we all waited for. (unless some unknown challenger just wants to jump on the ring... no... no competition ???? The only way I'd upgrade out of SC4 is to have one of: 1) A 2D isometric remake that improved graphics and fixed the bugs 2) A 3D sim game that achieves AT LEAST the same graphical standards SC4 did 10 years ago Right now, what I'm seeing everywhere about Skylines is that it comes nowhere near the same graphical standards SC4 did. It's more like SC3000 in appearance. Sorry, it looks like a kiddie game to me. Presentation is everything. I've got no interest in building a city that looks silly. SC4 cities look great, very visually appealing. Right now C:S cities look fairly lame. And as Heblem is pointing out here with models he put into SC4....you can't get anything approaching the SC4 visual standard in Skylines today. Maybe that will change. But I doubt it. Sounds like it is a significant engine restriction. BTW Heblem, you might want to trim your product key out of that pic.... From my limited understanding of such things, It is impossible for even modern computers to render full 3D cities full of buildings with as much detail as SC4. You might be waiting a very long time. The art style of some of the details in Skylines are exactly my cup of tea, I would prefer realism over silly donut trucks everywhere too, but graphically it is quite beautiful, especially when you play around with the color balance. The aerial views of people's cities look like shots from google earth, way more than SC4 ever could - the base for very realistic cities is there. Where the game really shines is the mod support, which is integrated beautifully. SC4 has ten years of amazing user content behind it, but if you were just starting now it would be much harder to mod the game without getting lost in a dependency jungle. Which is why seeing great awesome stuff like what Heblem is creating being added to the game already is so exciting. -

Highrise Ban District Policy broken?
aable replied to rpc180's topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
The districts are one of the coolest things about this game that was never in SimCity. I'm hoping CO adds more policies in the future, because although the high rise ban works as described, it is still hard to get buildings to stay in the lowest levels. There should be more "negative" policies that can help keep districts poor, dumb, and underdeveloped. I'm not trying to be an evil mayor, I just like seeing variety in my cities! -
The only building I haven't had a problem with so far is One Plaza. The author fixed LOD for that building, and it looks as it should from far away too. So Unless the author includes LODs, all of them end up looking messed up from further out, rescaled or not, as the game engine doesn't go a great job by itself. There needs to be some kind of PSA because it seems like almost every building I download I had this problem. Some aren't as bad as others. Hmm I tried it again and it works great. For some reason I thought the LODs weren't transferring to my rescaled buildings but maybe they didn't have LODs in the first place. This is a very cool feature for those of us who don't otherwise get into modding very much. I shrunk my whole downtown skyline by about 15% so that it's not quite so out of line with the zoned buildings. I just hope people don't take advantage of the asset editor by ripping off other people's work.

Looks great. I tried messing with this, but my rescaled buildings have the problem of getting messed up when you zoom out. Do you know of a way to fix that?

Did you create any lines for it?
-
Am I a bad person for thinking this...
aable replied to Deed_Poll's topic in Cities: Skylines Modding - Open Discussion
Reminds me of SImCopter. Those were good times. -
You can still set up local passenger rail systems that work just like the metro. I think you should be able to set up local cargo connections as well but I haven't tried that and I don't know how useful it would be.
-
This happens a lot with the trains. I fixed it in my city mostly: 1. Make a local passenger train system totally separate from the regional connection and make sure it doesn't connect to any cargo stations. this way it will work like the metro and it won't get overwhelmed with trains. You'll have to create lines like you do with other transit systems. 2. Make "Y" junctions bigger than what you have there so it's less likely that get stuck at an intersection. Trains stopping completely on the tracks causes a lot of backup. 3. You can make one or two passenger stations that connect to the regional line to bring in tourists but don't bring the trains too far off the main line or it will just create more of the same problem. Hopefully they will fix this to prevent too many trains from spawning from outside the region because it does seem to be bugged.

So I take it that building a vast New York-style CBD is out of the question at this point in the game? (it's very early) I'd love to take a look at what's being created if I can (since I trying to track how it develops to determine whether I eventually buy it) where might I go to do this? Anything closely resembling Manhattan is definitely not possible at the moment, unfortunately, as with SC4 the default skyscrapers are pretty short. Here is the workshop link, you should be able to browse online without having steam: http://steamcommunity.com/app/255710/workshop/ The is a lot of junk that is just recolors, small tweaks to the default buildings, but lots of new good stuff added every day. I have lots of hope for whats to come. For example, here is my CBD, several of the the tallest towers were just added to the workshop today: There are also already an impressive number of cathedrals and other old style buildings, a bunch or which were added by a Russian modder doing something of a Soviet themed pack, which is really cool for adding historic looking areas to your city. Check that stuff out here: http://steamcommunity.com/id/alex_polyak/myworkshopfiles/?appid=255710 Not bad for one week after release.

My Biggest Fear... Unique Cities!
aable replied to Robotica's topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
I totally agree as well. People forget how homogeneous vanilla SC4 was. The "Euro-Contemporary" and "New York 1940" etc. options were nice in theory, but in practice, unchecking some of those boxes just meant seeing the same buildings even more often. I would love to have more of an old fashioned gritty looking city as an option instead of the futuristic vibe, but I really think this will be possible eventually, with either official or unofficial content. And I love how great it runs with very few bugs right from the start. -
You can make ploppable and growable, same as SC4, and there are already a lot of both available. Biggest difference of course is the growable size limitation.

What do you want in Cities: Skylines?
aable replied to AidanA28's topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
A lot of people asking for medium density zone - I've been using high density zones combined with the height limit district policy to create pseudo-medium density neighborhoods pretty effectively. I know it's not exactly same thing but it works for creating a transition zone from a high-rise downtown to a low rise area.- 307 Replies
