  1. Nofunk's BAT Thread

BTw, just thought I'd post a little extra info on nofunk's Burton Tower. I found a historical image just after the tower's construction. I can't believe there were houses up next to it at one time!! And here is what the tower was supposed to look like. Unfortunately, during that time there wasn't a whole lot of money around to construct it: As you can see it's about 2.5 times taller than the actual built structure.
  2. tapered cylinder

I always wondered how to do this for making my smokestacks more conical looking.
  3. Nofunk's BAT Thread

The tower looks amazing! I love the lighting. Glad to finally see a major U of M landmark released soon. BTW I hate those tables next to the mural. I'm usually flying by on bike, nearly taking all of them (or taking me) out.
  4. Graffiti

That's just encourages them to do more, duh. We had a grafitti problem where I worked. It was the bad kind of grafitti with absolutely no talent. We kept painting it over the day after it appeared, and it stopped. Haven't had any issues for a few years. Since I'm in architecture, I have a deep respect for buildings and don't like to see them be vandalized. However, I do think there are places for this kind of stuff. The walls of vacant factory buildings (which would be sandblasted anyway if renovated) is fine. Beneath overpasses is okay as long as it's out of public eye. Detroit has some abandoned railroad viaducts that you can't see from anywhere on street level. IMO, it belongs down there. This is cool: Let's face it, no one ever goes down there except the people who do this. It can be considered an artistic hobby, and if it keeps them away from drugs and violence, that's okay with me.

Haha, I saw the ***** water tower when I was driving down Washtenaw this morning. I always get a good laugh out of it.

I didn't know you had 3ds 8, Jason. Jealous cause I have 7. Do you know what new features are added. Just asking because the architecture firm I'm working for is about to upgrade to 8. They are wondering if it's worth it, or if they should wait 2 more years. I don't know what to tell you about the lag though. Technically it shouldn't. I've had a whole city of high detailed buildings run flawlessly in 3ds. It might have to do with your memory possibly? When I started in architecture school, it was recommended our computers have 1gig of memory minimum or else our models would take forever to reload when moving around. Nice work on the Borders JB. I tried to apply for a job at that location, but I think they were turned off by the fact that I was in a very busy major. BTW if anyone needs pictures of buildings in AA, I'm back there for college now!

Man, I'm loving the intense detailwork. It's really rewarding to see the realistic shadows this will produce.
  10. Woooaaah. Man, these are awesome. Keep up the good work!

Oh god, that's sweet. Nice work nofunk! Such a meaningful building in AA JB, Yost looks great. Looks like you got the hardest part done. The detailwork looks awesome. Good news, I've been working on Ford Field. I'll post pictures when a significant amount of work is done. But basically I finished the dome portion, and I'm working around on the side concourses now.
  12. Jason's BATs & Tutorials

For anyone not familiar with the building Jason is batting, here is a picture of it, if it has not already been posted. It's sort of unflattering since it's the back. It's technically a very large complex of buildings of varying styles (4 total) You can see one annex in the foreground of the main tower

double post. I just checked on the software and it's working since they put the new version up. You can get quite a few courses of brick for an excllent texture, and you don't need to crop it either. Hundreds of color choices, and you can design your own walls.

Superb work on the Yost. I'll be back in AA in a week so if you need pictures, holla. BTW, here's a great place to get brick textures. http://www.acmebrick.com/ You might need to crop them a little bit to your liking, but they are diverse enough in brick colors to look good when tiled. You can get almost any color. They also have software that makes brick patterns, so you can have varying wall detail. For some reason, I have a problem installing it because the software claims it needs an update. But anyway, figured it would help everyone out a bit.

It's so hard though LOL. In essence, I BAT all day long at my architecture job. Except it's not for Sim City, it's for clients, and they buildings go up in real life. When I get home, all I want to do is chill, but then I'm off to my second job working retail. Summer went by so fast. I really long for the days two years ago when I could work on Ford Field for an extended amount of time. I'm sure the time will come. Until then, I'm enjoying seeing what you all make. All of you are doing amazing work. Now that I think of it, it would be cool if I released the models of the buildings I make at work into SimCity. I don't think I'm legally allowed to do that though until the buildings are finished, so that might to wait

Someone formerly working on this project was going to do the Statler. We have tons of pictures of it (being demolished). But it actually didn't seem like all that difficult of a building to model. Man, I really wish I had the time right now, I'm in that moving back mode. I think I'm just going to have to budget time to work on some BATting. BTW, I noticed it's super easy to make complicated detail work in sketchup and then just drop it into 3ds. It can really save time on making curves windows frames and complicated masonry work. Just a suggestion from 3 year user of 3ds.

looks like you'll be hangin' out in the Detroit libraries looking for Penobscot floorplans...

Try contacting Jeremy Prince at SmithGroup architects. He did some modeling stuff with downtown Detroit and has some precise massing of the building. I don't have the email address off the top of my head, I'll have to look it up.
  20. mipro Barry Sanders Project

Well let's start with this. Would you like to do something early 20th century or more contemporary? Man, I'd love to see the Guardian Building. It is a true Detroit landmark..nicknamed the Cathedral of Commerce

Whatup. Ford Field has now been revived. A very special thanks to you ardecila, completion of Ford Field is now possible. I can't believe how nice it is to finally have it in 3ds. No more slow gmax. This doesn't mean you all will see massive progress within the next few weeks. I work two jobs, so I will at most get an hour a day to work on it. But I'll post images when you start seeing a lot changes. I'm going to start working on the domed portion of the stadium.
  22. mipro Barry Sanders Project

Well, since I'm going to be leaving for Chicago this evening and won't be back until late Sunday, I figured I'd just post the link to the Ford Field model download. If anyone can get this to be a 3ds file I'd be happy. I trust that no one is going to misuse it for other purposes. http://www.umich.edu/~ifmuth/D'anthony/DETROIT/SOUTHof6mile/
  23. mipro Barry Sanders Project

Well, perhaps you could do me a favor then? The file is no longer on my computer, but is backed up somewhere on my university's network. I'll go on a search for it now and give you a download link. EDIT: Fortunately, I don't mind catch 1 since the model doesn't have textures.
