Trying to recreate a complex interchange. Seems impossible. Any pointers?
GeauxWave replied to GeauxWave's topic in NAM & Transit Networks
Just to confirm, it’s not possible to run road under a flexheight ramp, right? I could have sworn I had it that way previously, but after about 100 attempts I’m not able to do it again. The ramp keeps breaking if I run the road after placing the ramp. I’ve also tried the disconnector, dragging the road through, then dragging RHW along the ramp, but that totally breaks. -

Glad to hear that! I don’t mind small differences in the turn lanes. And no problem on keeping it in this thread. I actually prefer that, but assumed I should make another one because it may be too far off topic. -

Made some improvements to the Southbound curves. Looks much better now, and pretty darn close to the real thing IMO. I think I'll leave it at this, and start building the city now. I knew this was going to be a beast, so I wanted to tackle it first and then build up around it. Thanks again for all the help! This is the overpass just a few blocks north of what we just built. I need to do a lot of research before diving into this, but I'm sure I'll have more questions then. (will start a new thread) -

You're amazingly helpful. I've saved that DRI drag patterns table for future reference. It's crazy how complex some of these techniques are, but I imagine they start to become more intuitive with practice and the more one understands how it works behind the scenes. Here's a GIF of the pattern I used to create the ramp. It took me a while to get because I didn't realize I needed to expand the width to MIS-2. I kind of stumbled into that by accident, lol. The key was knowing about about having to use the disconnector and re-dragging. But like you said, it often takes a bit of coaxing and finding the exact pattern and order of steps to make things work. I actually find that to be a lot of fun. -

Another update... I was able to curve the southbound exit! It's a pretty sharp turn at the bottom of the ramp, but that was as far as I could push that 2-level height transition piece. I think this is now as close to the real thing as I will be able to do, and I'm very pleased with how it turned out. Big thanks to again to you, rsc204! The streetcar lines are in too. I just converted them to subway to bypass the mess, haha. They were discontinued in the 1930's anyways, so this is more of a fictional reality. Let's just say they installed the subway system when the interstate was built. I'm still trying to figure out how to merge in that MIS lane that curves behind the convention center though. It keeps trying to convert the HWY to RHW-2 or RHW-4 in the opposite direction. I'm starting to think it's a lost cause. I hope not! -

Okay, I think this is about as good as I can make it for the time being. It's far from perfect, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It's certainly better than what I thought would be possible! I still need to figure out how to connect that one ramp in the southeast corner, and of course, put in the GLR . -

Still learning and working on this, but I thought I would post an update. That video playlist has been so helpful. And I can't tell you how helpful your example build has been to me. Thank you very much for taking the time to do that! I'm staring to get a hang of the draggable ramps. Very cool stuff once you learn the patterns. I was able to make the number of lanes match perfectly to the real thing, and was even able to keep the old train station in its original spot, which I never thought would be possible. I threw the default convention center in there for now, but will definitely be looking for a better/closer match to the real thing. Have to take a break for a bit, but will post another update when I can work on it more. -

Thank you! This is all extremely helpful, and exactly the guidance I was looking for. Man, that video is gold. I experimented a little bit just now, and I think I'm starting to get the hang of it, starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. I'm excited, but I have to call it a night. I will work on it more in the morning, and report back. Thanks again! -

I got back into SC4 recently after about a 5 year hiatus, and decided to recreate the city of Pensacola, FL. First, I'd like to say thank you to everyone who has put work into creating the NAM and all the other great mods. This community has truly made SC4 a timeless classic of a game that is so much more fun than it ever could have been on its own! I have a lot to catch up on with the NAM and the new FLEX functionality especially, but I've been struggling on how to even approach the challenge of creating this termination of Interstate 110 in downtown pensacola (see attached for the google earth image). It has a weird curve at the the end, but I am totally willing to forgo that bit of realism. I have some room to the west to work with (see attached map with green box overlay). I think the bigger challenge is the convergence of the rail lines and tram network (the streetcars were disabled in the 1930s, but I want to bring them back!). I understand the game has limitations, but I was hoping you guys could help point me in the right direction as to where I will need to make compromises. I feel like, at a minimum I will need to push the two GLR East/West lines to the north (3 blocks) and south (2 blocks), right? What should I do about the rail though? Can I even run the ramps over the 8x8 90 degree turn? Can I do it over diagonal rail? Or should I just run it north prior to the highway and then cross it over north of the ramps? I'm hoping to keep things as close to reality as possible, but like I said, I know the game has limitations and I'll need to make compromises. Thanks in advance for any guidance you can offer. Even if it's just, "no way that's gonna happen". At least then I'll stop spending time trying to figure out how to do it, LOL. Google maps link. -
I'm new to this, and a bit confused about the dependencies. The description says that CPTNo8TreeModelsPartOne is a dependency, but the instructions above say to remove CPTNo8TreeModelsPartOne prior to running the installer. Does this mean that all of the dependencies are included in the installer? Thanks in advance for the help.

Steam version on sale for $9.99. Should i get it? (have App Store version)
GeauxWave posted a topic in SC4 Mac Users
The Steam version is on sale until January 2nd for $9.99. I just bought the App Store version last week (before reading that the Steam version was better/more stable). I haven't had any issues with CTD's so far, and I have over 500 files in my plugins folder. My cities are still pretty small though, so I'm not sure if more crashes will occur as my cities grow. I think the other difference is that the Steam version can use the Terrain editor feature, where I know my App Store version can't. Is there any other differences besides this and improved stability? I don't mind spending $10 for the Steam version if it means I'm going to have a more stable game. Should I grab it before the sale ends? But then again, I'm not having any issues (yet) with the App Store version. Is anyone else? Could it be possible that they've made stability improvements recently? -
Ah, ok. So it's within the "SimCity™4 Deluxe Edition.app" file itself?
-
I have the Mac App Store version. Does anyone know where the simcity_1.dat file is located? I've looked all over for it, but can't find it. Does it exist? or is it wrapped into something else? I have Parallels, with Windows running on a virtual machine, on which I was going to mess around with iLive's reader (for exploration more so than modding at this point). thanks.

Deleting cache? (sound effects remain after removing plugin)
GeauxWave posted a topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Is there a cache file that can be deleted? I initially installed which has a nice sound effect of a French speaking announcer guy. I have since removed those files from the plugins folder, and have installed the skin instead. The problem is that the sound effect French announcer guy still remains. I'm thinking this might be a caching thing? Does this sound right? By the way, I'm using the Mac App Store version of the game. Assuming there is a cache file, if you happen to know its location on the Mac, please let me know. That's ok if not. I can probably track it down, if it exists. thanks in advance. -
Thank you for the comment. I definitely see what you're saying. The thing is, there is no actual map. Suzanne Collins never provided one in her books, so every map out there is a fan-creation (including the example I based mine on). If you look at the Wiki page, you'll see that the map on that website varies greatly from the one I used as a base. Even the layout of the districts is completely different. Since no true map exists, I felt that it would be acceptable for me to make changes to help with the playability within Simcity 4 on a region of this size. Changes include: • Smoothed out the coast lines to remove the many tiny/unusable islands. • Added a river to run through the entire region, simply because I like to have coastline in my tiles. • Added an island for the Capitol city to reside because in the movies their train crosses over water as it enters the Capitol. • Added an island off of the coast of Louisiana (District 11), simply because I like islands. • Split the river in Louisiana into three to simulate the delta. • Made a horse shoe pattern in the river on the right side of Louisiana to simulate how the Mississippi river runs through the City of New Orleans (aka the "Crescent City"). • Added a large island off of the coast of District 12. Again, because i like islands, haha. Also to roughly simulate New York City. • Decreased the erosion to the State of Florida to give me more playable land in District 8, including a medium sized tile to the South. That being said, there is definitely room for improvement, especially to the elevation. I attempted to merge in an actual terrain map of the U.S., but it resulted in a very jagged terrain. Probably because A) this region is scaled down considerably, and B) I don't know what I'm doing, haha. So instead, I opted to simply add in a couple of hills where there should be mountain ranges, and edit the terrain manually as I played the map. However, I do plan on releasing another version of this map. As I was creating the Capitol, I found the island to be much too small. I have since doubled it in size in order to create a decent sized CBD (pic below). Also, i think I will erode Florida more in the next version, as you are suggesting. Lastly, I will attempt to improve on the elevation/mountains as well. Thanks again for the feedback; I really do appreciate it. (click image for wide angle view)
