Who uses money cheats/mods?
asovse1 replied to SUPERniceTODAY's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I don't use money cheats, but... Not sure if this counts, but I'm a real sucker for island cities/regions. This'll mean tons and tons of commuters travelling along congested stock/custom ferry routes. I've never had a problem with a lack of money, in fact I have a problem with having way too much and getting carried away with what to spend it on. (Don't I sound pretentious there?) When I start a new city in the region (a new island), the first ferry route usually kills all the debt and the city bounces straight into a surplus. The route's congested from all the prospering, neighbouring city connections. It feels weird knowing that the entire region is debt-free thanks to measly transit fares. :| -
I use Microsoft Visio, but I've seen others brilliantly use MS Paint, Inkscape, and Adobe Illustrator. I also have this bookmarked for some reason: http://beno.org.uk/metromapcreator/#

Fantasized a monorail map of my only large city tile: To make a map in Visio! (WIP) It's really, really, really disproportional, I know. But I hope that "users" can easily find that the message gets across via my map.

For those who are lucky enough to attain a code deployed to the public (through dev Twitter feeds, dev Reddit deployments, giveaways), where would they be inputted? Just curious in case I have this lucky opportunity.

I had a similar situation. I was developing a region of islands. Islands everywhere. Then I got to play around with the large tiles and I connected them to the region-wide ferry system. Oh. My. Goodness. Income boomed from struggling to break even to +127k profit. The ferry system was so congested that there was no red or orange on the volume layer map, only white. For every route. Transit fares on this tile contributes to the massive income it rakes in. Without it, I'd be long in debt.

Does Sim City 4 work on Windows 8?
asovse1 replied to Fanoboy's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Why wouldn't it? We asked the same question with Vista, and it worked fine. Windows 7 was (underneath) full of minor improvements to Vista, and Windows 8 is likewise the same incremental update to Windows 7. What we should be worried about is something completely brand new years to come. But by then, SimCity 4 won't have the same massive player base it heeds now (God forbid, please prove me wrong), and everyone's flocked to SimCity 2013. Plus, there'll likely be compatibility mode then, too. I ramble and ramble... -
Think about it this way, the most realistic real-world application to the buses in SC4 is the dial-a-bus service found in some cities. Edmonton, Canada had it, and St. Albert, Strathcona County, Alberta Transit still uses it.

The United Cities*4th Birthday and Retirement!*
asovse1 replied to nathanthemayor's topic in SC4 City Journals
I've been hounding threads, and I've found one with these floaty transparent highway signs. Well, a ton of people use them. They're all nice work. Yours is no exception, they're beautiful. ...are they a game mod or did you just picture edit them in? :| -
If there are files that apply changes to the main game's language, re-create that file and add in the translations of your own. ...if I understand your question correctly, that is.

Ooh, here's a fun one. If you have administrator privileges on your network, set the Plugins folder on both the program directory and the individual user's directory to write-lock. Combine THIS and the fact that the built-in cheats are dead-simple to spot and ineffective to use, and you have a teacher's fool-proof cheat guard. Keep in mind I'm still under the impression that this project is done at school. But even then, you should encourage your students to wrap up any work AT school before submission for maximum guard. As for executable trainers and installers, you'd need basic administrator privileges to install them or even run them in a way that it can access the game's directory, (I hope I'm not wrong, that would be very embarrassing and offensive to those who actually know the answer) so you're pretty much good there.

This is just me guessing outta the blue here, but something I'd suggest is to have a mod-free environment yourself. After you receive your students' cities or regions, be sure you have the vanilla game running. If they were using mods or plugins, you'd instantly see that the most crucial aspects within the city would stop functioning or function stupidly. As for cheat codes, they're mostly simple. Unless the students were very desperate, "weaknesspays" (1000 simoleons per use) cheat code is awful and time-consuming. "fightthepower" and "howdryiam" resets every time you close the game, right? If it doesn't, just check your power and water supply graph to see if there's anything strange. Warning, it requires graph-reading skills . "you don't deserve it" can be circumvented by seeing which reward buildings have been implemented. You can find one, and search for it in the building list, and if it was plopped through dishonest means, it will say "This building is not available" or something like that. Maybe someone else has more ideas?

Ferry terminals roads connection?
asovse1 replied to chaucolai's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
As answered above twice, this is how your ferry terminal should look after dragging the roads through them. You've spent enough time placing them on the perfect plot of land, and the next step is quite simple, drag it through once more: I really admire the ferry system. Hope you have fun with them! -
Either I screwed up bad counting, but I've hit my 16 ferry limit, and all other ferry terminals I want to add extra within a city tile come from the Exchange. I got the Modern Ferry Terminal, and a Water Taxi mod. Here you go:

Do God Mode trees make a difference in comparison to Mayor Mode trees? It's a fun habit of mine to completely fill up an entire city when editing it in God Mode with trees. It gives that undisturbed and pristine feeling when starting anew. Though compared to when I did not have this habit adopted, the pollution levels on both the data map and data chart are similar when comparing city tiles in similar size and industrial strength.

Sim city 4 steam on steam users, please help
asovse1 replied to moesylver's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
From what I understand, the options are random. Zone either low, medium, or high density (your ONLY options), or agricultural, medium, or high density industrial to achieve different types of buildings. There should be no difference between the SimCity 4 games found in retail, and the ones found in Steam. As for your menu options, you were probably thinking of another game. I don't recall any SimCity game where you were offered more than three options for building residential or industrial.
