Thanks again for the comparison and evaluation of the differences between Simcity 4 and real life. Frankly speaking it needs a person to be very analytical and critical to do so and you've done it dedgren! Congratulations and this CJ is truly one of my favourite. The contents are simply too juicy! 3.gif

Oh, and regarding the stark differences between the population density... I think the blame should be on the 16m / tile scale. Not everything can fit into the 16m / tile scale, for example, having 32m wide avenue is horrible wide! In my country each avenue lane measures about 1.5m and I think none of them will exceed 2m (that's why I think). That'll mean that the 4 lane wide avenue, with comparison to real life width of the lanes, should actually be at least 16 lanes wide in accordance to the proposed scale. Just my 2 cents 2.gif

Wonderful discovery you have made over here through the course of this CJ. Keep up the excellent job and I can't wait for even juicier stuff! 44.gifquote>

Hey David, looks like our friend Terry stole your 1000 post! 9.gif Congrats Terry on being the one, and to David's 3RR on this milestone. 2.gif

Well, I'm glad that's all sorted out. I fear that we have a few over-zealous mods on this site, but, no matter, hopefully we can all still enjoy the sights (and the ridiculous run-on sentences).

Maybe the admins and mods should have you interpret all the rules for them...

    David,

(And yes I can call you David)

An excellently put statement my friend.   I can definatelly tell you are a lawyer.  LOL I thought I was reading a legal brief for a moment.    I was waiting for "And the party of the first part".      As I stated in my post the "off-topic rules" forum "Many cities, One community"   I believe that one statement says it all.    And thanks for the reference to my PM to you.  I wish you could link to it; and certainly have my permission to do so if there is a way.    Hopefully you are haveing a great day.

---Gaston < I really do use this in real life.

And since we determined I can tell you about it (Being I am over 21 considered legal age in the state I live in) I will tell you very briefly.    I am in a group that recreates the middle ages and have been for nearly 20 years.    Gaston is the name of the person I become in the SCA.  (SCA is an international non-profit group that recreates the middle ages [sCA=Society for Creative Anachronism])    If you'd like more info feel free to PM me and I will provide some links.

    Liv,

This is the funniest thing I have ever read,   Loved It:

edit in the form of a question and to avoid the dreaded double post...

David (we established earlier that I can call you that),

You are the undisputed king of the 'linkie'.   The question is, How do you do that?  I mean I can make a link easy enough (ie: www.sca.org ) <like that which I wanted to put in my name explaination.   But how do you hide it with text and the little linkie button?  (note: the linkie s above and here do not link to anything.  they are for clearification reasons only)   Any help would be appreciated.    Again ---Gaston

Good to hear you have all that straightened out (hopefully) David. Edgren's law...sad but true. Hopefully there'll be some 3RR news soon, but I do like the lawyerly approach to your dissection of the guidelines of the site. I hope that you (and the other members and friends of the site that have had certain issues) have satisfactory resolutions and that the zeal of the admins/mods of the site continues (with possibly some moderation...hey an unintended pun). The tables are indeed a curious subject but, at least for New York, the population density of the area does not necessarily represent an even distribution throughou the land area and at points is concentrated in the "skyscraper forests" that some people use to boost their pops. The twin towers (whose area is about 1000x2000ft) had its own zip code. Furthermore, a large mass of the city of New York (as far as I can recall) is commercial (thus not counting for population numbers). LA, a city a bit closer for me (as I live in it currently), has a strip of land that serves no other purpose than to connect northern LA to the port area. Border tricks like this tend to add unpopulated mileage that could also skew the results. While the game is a simulation, it may not be all that far off from an average city (especially since a number of cjs also use the single lot §§ game house that has the same population as a 3x3 §§ game house of the same type: ex 2 Story House). Long windedness aside, great stuff, and keep it up. ---edit: Also, one other suggestion/question that I have (since you often update the same post multiple times) would it be possible to indicate where the update is continuing from (i.e. the new stuff) so someone skimming through to see any new changes (people like...me) might see them easier? either way, I'll be back.

I agree with your latest update in that you, Hewhowritesthreeriverregionandisamasterofterraformingandmappingingeneral, is an adult and as such excepted from the rigorous (alas most necessary) forum rules.

Well, I'll start the posting frenzy I intend to subject you all to over the next little bit by briefly responding to as many of the great comments of the past few days before I leave for the office.  I also have in the pipeline a continuation of the ongoing update [ linkie ] during which I intend to announce...

    ...wait for it...

...the next continuation of the update!

    ...awwww, that's not right...

    Okay, okay.

...the next continuation of the update!  ...at least preliminarily how I intend to solve my problems with scale in 3RR.

    ...is that better, now?

I'll also be uploading to the STEX a little gift to the community passed along to me by jeronij (Simtropia).

    Lastly,

    ...Lastly?

    ...

    ...grammar police, quick- over here!

    alertlightel9.gif

Oh, give me a break!  I claim all the rights and privileges of artistic license.

...it's not a license to murder the English language...

Go tell Yogi Berra [ linkie ]Lastly, I'll hold a little celebration for the 1,000th post on 3RR [ linkie ] and our 15,000th page view, which might have even happened by the time I post this (we're at 14,987 as we speak).

So, lots to come...check back frequently, please.

n.b.:  A note of general interest.  patriots_1228 (Pulserock) has started a topic thread entitled City Journal Critics Team [ linkie ].  He's soliciting input.  There have already been a number of really insightful comments by folks who I would consider 3RR regulars (that's anyone who has ever posted here- thanks so much once again).  It's worth a minute to stop by and let patriots_1228 know what you think- he sounds like he's genuinely interested and would take into account what the community has to say.

Also, a number of great CJs that had been dormant for awhile have reappeared.  jeronij's Simtropia, of course, and also MasterPlanMan's Glen Harbor are two that come immediately to mind.  There are others- watch the index for familiar old CJ names.

    On to the mail-

Nik-nik:  Thanks for your thoughts, posted on 10/11, as to the "what adults can and can't do at ST" brouhaha.

I'm going to use your comment as a vehicle to throw in my last 2 cents about the issue, then I would ask that we all move on.  I really appreciate your supportive comment as to the whole situation, along with everyone else, whether I've named them here or not, who contacted me in the last little bit.  I feel obligated, though, to say that what we are dealing with here is not really a censorship issue- ST, and by that I mean that dirk and the admins and mods he (I'm assuming dirk is a guy...

    dirkdaringqe9.jpg

...or, per Fezzik's dreams [ linkie ], a very large woman) empowers to act on his behalf are entitled to make whatever rules they please.  As I said before,

ST has the right to make any rules it wants in governing the participation and conduct of its members.  This, for a voluntary community composed of extremely diverse netizens, is a remarkably tolerant and civil place. The rare real transgressor here is, in my experience, speedily condemned by the vast majority of folks.  Bona fide nuts like me are tolerated, even indulged a bit.  I think that by and large we are self-policing, and that's a pretty good indication that the benevolent dirktatorship is working pretty well.quote>

We, the members of the community, are free, if we don't like a rule, to ask that it be changed.  dirk, et al, hold the power to either grant or refuse such requests.  In doing either, they would act entirely correctly, as it is their website.  We are, ultimately, just guests here.  Those who provide us ST are doing a whole bunch of heavy lifting to keep it on the air available for us to enjoy.  Our ultimate freedom, then, under these circumstances, is to choose to stay or go.

Now, I'm not copping out here.  I just want to make to make the distinction between what didn't happen: censorship, which by definition only a governmental authority can engage in, and what did: me, the undersigned being told to do something based on a rule that didn't apply to me and others similarly situated by virtue of their age.

I pointed out, in a number of different ways, that I believed I was acting within ST's rules in placing personal information (within limits) in my posts.  So far, I haven't been advised to the contrary.  That shoe could be dropped anytime...

...hey, as noted, it's dirk's shoe...

...but it hasn't fallen yet.  The ST rules could be changed, and after that would happen, I'd be violating them and, as an upstanding community member, would stop doing so pending further change.  I would also, though, if that happened, evaluate my options...

This is, once again, a voluntary community of interest.

Not to continue beating this particular drum, but a situation where the members truly do need to be heard from is on the "two intervening posts" rule [ linkie ] applying to Off Topic threads.  I view that rule, as I've said before, as specifically targeted at jacqulina's "Kabin," and I think that the situation is truly an unfortunate and unfair one.  That would be another good place for 3RR commenters to throw in their own 2 cents.

So, with the completion (there are other comments that follow where the topic is raised that I will briefly address having had my say here) of this post, I'll ask that we move on.

    Nik-nik...

...you still there?  ...all I can hear is this loud snoring noise...

Hi David. I hate to get off topic once again here but your pictures from Alaska are so wonderful, I couldn't just go on without mentioning that... I'm looking forward to your city building in fact, because I'd like to find out how your RL environment has affected your imagination. I know that my home has inspired my playing style a lot in some ways, although Acorn Creek is supposed to be American. It's interesting how our background influences our way to act, play, etc.

Meanwhile, I'm definitely looking forward to more to come 4.gif.

    Take care!

    - Phil (no need to withhold that one...lol)

Btw, I personally think that the paragraphs about personal information are sensible... for teens particularly but even for grown-ups it's worth to consider. I've recently visited a website set up by our local police forces (Fit4Chat, it's in German)... it's a campaigne to sensitize parents, teachers and kids about safety in chats, etc. and some information actually took me by surprise. But of course you're right... why make a rule about it... I think prevention through information would be WAAAY better...

It's an oddly American (conservative American, but that's a whole other topic with a long diatribe by yours truly) way of doing things... making rules about what you can't do rather than educating the populace and then letting them decide for themselves.

    End $0.02

However, I am looking forward to the end of the update...

Regarding this whole scaling issue . . . I remember reading about a local roadway improvement in the newspaper, which was to involve widening a two-lane road to three lanes (two lanes plus center turn lane).  They also had the road width dimensions, and if I remember right, the three lane roadway was going to be about 74 ft. wide, which converts to just under 22 meters.  If you divide that out, each lane is about 7.3 meters in width.  A quick Google search turned up the Road Width Standards for the city of Mill Creek, WA, which also seems to be in line with this figure.  The two lane road in SC4 is 16 meters, so it actually works out just about right proportionally.

I still, however, have a really hard time believing it . . .

The avenue, however, based on these calculations and figuring it is derived from a five lane model, is actually a few meters too narrow--though it might be that the inner lanes are narrower since they don't need to have shoulders.

As you know I have put in about $1.25's worth of my 2¢ worth.   I have posted a bit here, in PM's to you, and in the "rules" section.    So far I don't think I need the lawyer to help me with my defense.   LOL   But ya never know.  2.gif   I think even Jacky has been made aware of my feelings on the subject.    That being said, I will not launch into another diatribe (<can you tell my GF is a Professor of American Literature) on the subject.    I'll just say that I am okay with enforcement of "clearly defined" rules when it is done across the entire spectrum of this community.   Nuf said?

    On to other things:

I don't know why but this absolutely fascinated me.    It really amazes me that someone has taken the game to that kind of level.    Just like you and the mapping you do.    It is incredible to think that ya'll have devoted so much to this just for our enjoyment.       I just want to take a moment and say thanks to ALL the people how are so dedicated to making this game more true to life and fun for us all.     Thanks.

Looking forward to more posts, soon.    And I can't wait to see what you put on the STEX!       I find myself sitting here waiting for it to show up while I am still on line.  LMAO    I need to stop in to a couple more CJs and a forum or two before bed.   (nearly 11pm here in Iowa).      Later my friend.

Back to "We've got Mail..." in a bit.

On the 10th of this month a minute before 2:30 in the morning Alaska time (GMT-9) my friend Terry (terrymunweihao - Botania) made the 1,000th post on 3RR.

    1000postsoi5.png

We thus became, two days short of seven months ongoing, the 16th member of what I believe to be a very special group of CJs- those currently on the index with 1,000 or more comments.

Here they are as of today:

    Darmok's Anduin Valley Revisited

    DragonAnime's Palm Point

    mrbisonm's Nexis of Genesis

    jeronij's Simtropia

    TheJerseyDevil73's City of EDMONTON

    chocolatemax285's Green Depra

    thatmonkeysim's Wood County - Rebirth

aleking's AK's STEX Tirbute City (or whatever alek calls it an hour from now)

    dhoppeii's LaPlaisance County

MrCinatit's Stranded, A Mr. Cinatit journal

    aleking's The Brastoval Bay Area

    cjah's Bostalk

    jarnomiedema's The Empire of Chaumont

    sloppet's Anwakee County

    bourneid's Broome County

and now our very own Three Rivers Region

What a great group to be a part of.  I'm both honored and humbled by the support of those who've stuck with 3RR through its many excursions into unknown and, at times, simply strange territory.  I don't think anyone would argue that we're not exactly your Aunt Hattie's garden variety CJ here.

And, I intend to keep it that way so long as all of you keep coming back for, as Torben (GMT - Greater Columbia River) so succinctly puts it from time to time...

    ...more.

So, without further ado (adieu? adieux? ...sheesh), Terry, in appreciation for your substantial contribution to 3RR, you can expect to see this sign go up in the region soon.

    terrysbotanicalgardenssigntd5.png

Thanks ever so much once again.

I would also be remiss if I didn't note a second milestone, and the good friend who got us there.  I'm talking about the 15,000th page view of 3RR, which coincidentally happened at the almost exact same time as comments reached 1,000.

    15000viewsus3.png

Mid-morning (in Alaska, anyway) yesterday Phil (PhilsCafe - Acorn Creek Region  Nova Helvetia, Pakkusena) put 3RR past this milestone.  It's a great feeling to know that, even if folks don't leave a comment, lots of them are always lurking- I just wish there was a way [ linkie ] to say hi to them from time to time.

Phil, in the next little bit you might, during a visit to 3RR, see

    philscafeyi0.png

Sounds like a great place to stop by.  Thank you for being a part of 3RR.

Much more to come as the day continues.

    Later.

    David,

There never was any doubts in my mind that 3RR would break the 1 000th post barrier, I'm sure that  it'll also break the 3 000th mark sooner than you think.

This endeavour is a labor of love, and sometimes craziness (no disrespect intended... in fact I'm glad I'm not alone on that score) and it shows.

So, my friend, allow me to raise a glass of Talisker to your health, waiting to do it in RL, and to the next 2 000 posts!

    Take care

    John

P.S. I don't see any pics in your last post.... imageshack problems again?

EDITED : Ha! situation is corrected now! I can see them!

I've added the following line to my sig:

Want to use the Intervening Post MachineTM [ linkie ] to comment at Jacky's Kabin[ click here ]

So...what is the IPM, you ask?

It's modeled after the famous Blue Ball Machine [ linkie ] but its inner workings must remain, by necessity,

    TOP SECRET.

What it does, when you click on the [ click here ] linkie, is whisk you away instantly to a "Reply to a Message" window that, once you add content...

    ...substantive content, please...

...will as if by magic create an "intervening post" [ linkie ] at the Kabin.

Trust me, that's a good thing.

Now, there are a few rules.

Only do this once each day, unless you are actually at the Kabin.  The reason for this is that you do not want to violate the intervening post rule [ linkie ] which, while quite silly, is still a rule.  Remember, when you use the machine, you can't see the Kabin, so a separation of a day or so between posts should allow amply leeway for the rule to be properly observed.  Remember as well that if you violate the rule by using the machine more than once a day or so, it's your sig at the bottom of the post.

The way the rule is being applied also at least infers the requirement that your IPM post is substantive.

We take this to mean that you should not just say

    Hi, Kabin!quote>

and leave it at that.  Add content, like

Hi, Kabin- what do you think about North Korea's nuclear test?quote>

    or

hi, Kabin- what new feature would you most like to see in SC5?quote>

Use your imagination.  It's easy.  It's fun.

It will help keep Jacky's Kabin from being ruined by a silly rule.

    Thanks.

    David

n.b.:  If you would like to include a link to the IPM in your sig, let me know by PM.  I'll be happy to hook you up.
