Thanks a lot dedgren! Haha I didn't actually expect so much for helping to achieve the milestone but I'm glad that I helped 9.gif And if I accidentally spoil the plan for you yourself to post the 1000th post, sorries! 45.gif I should have looked at the post count before posting.

Anyways, 3RR is really doing well dedgren! And of course a thousand million billion trillion thank you for sharing those amazing ploppable rocks! They do miracles for my rivers that are constructed from ploppable water. On the other hand, although long expired but I would still like to express my gratitude to you for sharing the amazing tutorial about how to create rivers with ploppable water... it helped me a lot 2.gif

See ya!

Well, I don't know about this new-fangled machine...

IPM you called it?

...but I do know that everyone should support Jacky, not those jealous mods...

Congrats on the 1000 comments and 15000 page views. It's great to see such good work awarded with such devotion.

Hi David. I didn't realize that I made the 15,000th page view... congrats on that milestone 39.gif, great to see that your CJ's still going strong.

Take care!

PS: What's odd is, some of your latest pictures, namely the last 3, still don't show up for me...

huh, what..........

Sorry fell asleep on top of the keyboard........

eh, nice dog. She (that's the dog handler) is still smiling, so probably this picture was taken before the dog jumped in the mountain stream. Or if he did not, that dog is smart as that is probably a very cold mountain stream.

Thanks for the update. I was a bit disyracted by the KT & Jacky linkie.

have a great weekend (guess what'.. it's 5 'o clock! I'll be heading home now)

Nik-Nik

EDIT: missed another 3 updates on page 35. Congrats with 1.000 POSTS!!!! 39.gif

Guess I need to stop at STEX now huh. There goes my early evening Friday afternoon.....

Never one not to hop on a moving bandwagon, here's my 15 minute effort at quick and dirty animation.

    sfalls4oy1.gif

Click on the above pic or here [ linkie ] for an 800x600 version- warning, it's 1.3 meg.

This is being done by experts (jeronij in Simtropia and wouanagaine in Viridis Doria Provincia).  Maybe I shouldn't be trying it at home.

Still much more later today and into the weekend- I'll continue the in progress "We've got Mail..." and plan to have some important conclusions concerning 3RR in the ongoing "Scale" update.

    Have a great Friday!

    David

UPDATE:  Watching the big version of the pic for too long is like listening to "Chicken Heart" by Bill Cosby [ linkie ]...

    ...da-DUM!...  ...da-DUM!...  ...da-DUM!...

Congrats on 1000 posts!  Mine's approaching, so I'm looking forward to joining the elite squad too.

I've been doing a lot of experimenting with some of your STEX downloads.  I'm hoping to make them as pretty as others have, but I think I have more practicing to do.  3.gif

Congrats on hitting a 1,000!!! This CJ is quite deserving of such a milestone. The effort you have put forth sheds some new light on game play ~ especially for those who are trying to achieve as much realism as possible.

Keep up the great work and I look forward to future updates!

    Hey David,

You live in one of the most beatiful places I have ever seen.    You are indeed a lucky man.   As to your query:

btw- is anyone else noticing ST running at extremely slow spped the past little bit.  I'm actually posting this now in order to reboot my computer in order to make sure the problem isn't at my end.

Heck yes I have noticed it.   It takes forever for me to look at any of the CJs I usually load up in just a moment or two.

I'll pick up the ongoing "We've got Mail..." post from back on page 34 [ linkie ] here.  Please note that I continue to add to the ongoing "scale" update that is on page 35 [ linkie ].  I'll note its completion in a current post when we get that far but, until then, check it out from time to time for new additions.

    _______________________

    Notes and Asides

ST is running dreadfully slow, at least on my computer.  Some pages are taking 30 or 40 seconds to load or refresh.  Is anyone else having that problem?  There's nothing on the home page about the situation, which has been ongoing for the past four or five days.  If an admin or moderator reads this, could the peasants be informed, please, if there is a problem at the server end- otherwise we think it's our own computers and get all frustrated.

Check out the "Plop-a-Cow" thread [ linkie ].  You won't regret it, and you will find several...

    ...uhhhh...

...ultrarealistic ploppable (one in all meanings of the word) props.

Wha' happened?  This post and the Alaska RL eye candy on the the "scale" update noted above [ linkie ] went up Sunday morning (Alaska Standard Time GMT-9).  Then, 24 hours or so of dead air.  Well, shortly after doing those things and posting on a couple of other CJs, I realized I had a sore throat.  I made some tea, put my feet up, relaxed...and woke up realizing it was mid-afternoon and that I still felt lousy.  I just pretty much bagged the rest of the day, and have decided to stay home again today (Monday, the 16th) as I really don't feel much better.  I'm going to work on 3RR for a while, though, to keep things moving along.

So, starting with asturianu's comment just below this one, here's responses (which may be a bit shorter than usual- I'd like to get as far along as I can) to the latest mail...

    _______________________

Cristian (asturianu - Lloyd, Ontario, Canada):  You asked on 10-15

how's today the weather and the temperature in the beautiful Alaskaquote>

Well, we finally had our first overnight freezing temperatures toward the end of last week.  Saturday night, though, was a "hard" freeze, as I'm sure it was down in the upper 20s (F).  Sunday was cold and pretty clear, and never got far up into the 30s.  It's really something- if history is a guide, two weeks from now we won't even make it into the 30s.

Here's an average monthly temperature chart for the Anchorage, Alaska area from CityRating.com [ linkie ].

    Average Temperature by Month (ºF)

After almost forgetting, you then observed

    the last pics are magnificalquote>

    So is your CJ, Cristian!

    _______________________

Owen (owenluby - Unifire):  On 10-15, you said

When I open the front door, all I see is a little street with kids playing footy 'cross the road... I want to see what you see!quote>

Well, the pics are the best I can do for right now, but if you (or anyone else reading this) ever do decide to visit Alaska- PM me.  I'd be happy to give you my 2c on what to see while you're here.

As you also could probably guess, I would love to have the chance to travel to Australia.  Your scenery there, from the pics I've seen, is top-notch.  I just happen to live sort of in the middle of mine.

Watch out for those kids in the road, Owen!

    _______________________

Gaston:  I'll catch your two comments over the past few days here:

On 10-14, you became the only other person who acknowledged troubles with "slowness" here at ST.  It seems to have gotten a bit better at my end of things, but the zip-zip-zip performance I'd come to expect over the past months is just not there.

On 10-11, you voiced your support for

enforcement of "clearly defined" rules when it is done across the entire spectrum of this communityquote>

As home ec maven and federal felon Martha Stewart [ linkie ] used to say, "that's a good thing."

You also quoted the post by 3RR commenter Tarkus [ linkie to EL&P album of the same name, I just can't help myself when I see in someone's sig "Certified prog enthusiast"] made on 10-11 providing some fairly detailed information concerning roadway lane widths, then observed

I don't know why but this absolutely fascinated me.  It really amazes me that someone has taken the game to that kind of level.  Just like you and the mapping you do.  It is incredible to think that ya'll have devoted so much to this just for our enjoyment.  I just want to take a moment and say thanks to ALL the people how are so dedicated to making this game more true to life and fun for us all.quote>

I'll say here that there is probably a fairly fine line between where SC4 has enough basis in RL considerations to allow us to relate to the game as something other than fantasy and where slavish replication of those RL considerations leaves the game cold, sterile and, above all, no darn fun.  It's my belief that SC4 dhould be taken as intended, as is the case with other well-crafted recreational activities, to provide an escape from RL that is varied and exciting enough not to pall or become boring over time.  I see the insight by Tarkus into the game accurately scaling road and highway lane width as being the sort of thing that allows us to get more enjoyment out of playing the game, and not the latter.  The proof of that is in looking at a City Life [ linkie - sorry, I couldn't resist that] screenie...

    clygtbk01ph8.jpg

...where it is clear that road realism is simply not something to which the designers of that game ever gave a second thought.

Anyway, thanks for your great comments- you are always way too generous where 3RR is concerned.

    _______________________

mybrunswick:  Hey, thanks so much for your first post on 3RR, and welcome!

    On 10-14, you observed

    I love your CJ....informative and FUN!quote>

    ...blush...

You, like Gaston, are way too kind.  Although, I do try really hard to keep my eye on the ball when it comes to the "FUN" component.  If I had any sense that 3RR was no longer a CJ with some sense of fun...

...at least as far as taking ourselves too seriously, anyway...

...that's the day I'd throw this over and go back to NetHack [ linkie ].

As far as Murphy, about whom you asked

what the heck kinda dog is that?quote>

    murphy02iq0.jpg

We think Murphy's an Aire-Rott (Airedale-Rottweiler cross).  We really don't know, as we brought him home about three years ago from the local Puppy Rescue [ linkie ].  He's about 110 pounds of the sweetest natured dog I've ever seen.  I think he barks, despite his appearance, about three times a year.  He has that really "wiry" Airedale coat, except for his floppy little tiny ears, which are about as soft as soft can be.

    He's a keeper.

    _______________________

Off to the doc at about 11:00 a.m. AST.

...3RR elevator music [ linkie ] plays softly in the backgound for your listening pleasure...

Back from the doc at about 1:00 p.m. AST.  No really bad news- I'm just an overweight, overworked and over-the-hill baby boomer with the flu.

...run away...  ...run away... [ linkie ]

Well, on the fax from the office we see: 1) a call from a grumpy judge; 2) a call from a real estate broker about one of whose agents I'm filing a Real Estate Commission complaint, 3)a set of proposed Findings of Fact and Conclusions of Law in a settled divorce case for review; 4) a notice passed along by a client indicating that her ex-husband's motorcycle is being repossessed; and 5) a "So What" letter from another attorney who was hired by a person from whom I demanded specific assurances in a real estate matter.  I'll call the grumpy judge, then get back to doing the really important stuff- such as continuing this post.

    ...more elevator music...

Back again...ahhh, judges- what can I say?  Lawyers can't live with 'em, and can't live without 'em...

As long as I'm not being told to report to the court with a toothbrush and deodorant, I consider things OK.

Back to the mail in a minute, but I want to call everyone's attention to a failing on my part that Silvio (Rayden - Els Pirineus) has pointed out in his subsequent post here [ linkie ].

    Silvio protests

Well my friend, some of us don't have any clue how much is ºF (me for instance 9.gif 2.gif, so for all of those, I took the liberty to edit your table and replace those figgers for our europeanish and easier ºC numbers.quote>

and is absolutely right.  I mean, I think the fahrenheit scale of temperature measurement is used today by a list of major nations such as the United States and...uhhhh...

uhhh, uhhh, wait a minute, another's coming to me...  ...uhhh...  ...Outer Wazinkie?

...yeah, Outer Wazinkie [ linkie ], so I really am doing a disservice to the vast majority of folks on ST for not taking a few secs to do a conversion...

    ...C = ((F - 32) x 5) / 9, where C = degrees centigrade and F = degrees fahrenheit...

Thank you, Silvio, for updating my chart.  I will make sure in the future I do better.  Thanks so much as well for the get well wishes and medical advice

My recipe for nasty colds, one anti-flu pill, one lemon tea with honey and a shot of brandy, or firewater, schnaps or any other liquour with alcohol average above 40º. After that put your pijama and get to bed, "swet like a pig" during all night and get up in the morning like new, flu gone. This is true, no joke, and that's what my grand father tought me once long time ago. 4.gifquote>

I think that's amended in my case with "a large shot" but that's pretty much what I will plan to do.

Do you take Blue Cross [ linkie ], doc?

    _______________________

Steve (sorchin - Developing Macedon):  On 10-13, you kindly said

Congrats on 1000 posts. Your in great company indeed.quote>

Not as great as it will be when DM gets there, too, my friend.

    You went on

Nice animation pic as well. Someday I'll actually learn how to do that.quote>

I wasn't sure if you were being tongue-in-cheek [ linkie ] about my little animated GIF or not.  Compared to the high-tech stuff (Flash [ linkie ] and heavens knows what else wouanagaine [ linkie ] and jeronij [ linkie ] are doing, that old stone age animation technology [ linkie ] don't look so good.

    Finally

    Jeronij's waterfalls are beautiful arn't they?quote>

Yes, they certainly are.  Yours are no slouch, either [ linkie ], my friend.  Then there's the ones by Peg [ linkie ].  And finally, mine [ linkie ].  Choice is good!

    _______________________

I'm worried about hitting the dread ST "post linkie barrier," where, when you include too many links (and how many is too many?- You never know until it's too late) in a post, hit the "Edit Message" button and...

    ...poof...

...half your post has disappeared.  So I'll continue this in a subsequent post that starts down the page a bit here [ last linkie ...come on...  ...come on...  Phew! ]  n.b.: that last link won't work, of course, until I create the post.  If you've pressed the linkie anyway before reading this, the universe will end as you know it in 3 seco

After that I was really surprise, first because I was expecting much colder temps in the winter and a bit more heat in summer. I guess my picture of Alaska is a bit distorted.

This is the link of the average temps of the coldest region I went on one of my snow trips. The coldest temperature I felt was -56,8ºC (-70,3ºF) (-37ºC plus 40Km wind chill) and I still snowboarded. For the ones you don't know what wind chill is, that's how many degrees does the wind drops the real temperature. You can check this calculator for wind chill.

And here my city's average temperatures.

I hope you don't mind all this extra info on your CJ, and I would wipe it off if you want. In the meantime, I hope you get better soon.

Woah, something seems to be really wrong at the moment: There was a quake in Hawaii, in Santa Cruz on the same day and now Alaska... strong activity on the Pacific plate, I hope it doesn't get worse.

Speaking of Alaska, beautiful pictures there once again. But I'm just ignoring the CityLife picture... clingwrap-water and they've never heard of a bridge-height mod either 2.gif.

    Take care David.

It's the Mercali scale, a lot less than if it was on the Richter scale. Find some info here.

I have a lot of those here in the area where I live. The junction of the Eurasian tectonic plate and the African plate run through this area. Major tectonic plates around the world.

I'll again pick up the ongoing "We've got Mail..." post from back up this page [ linkie ] here.  Please note that I plan to continue on Tuesday (10-17-06) to add to the ongoing "scale" update that is on page 35 [ linkie ].  I'll note its completion in a current post when we get that far but, until then, check it out from time to time for new additions.

MasterPlanMan (Glen Harbor):  On 10-13, you kindly noted

The effort you have put forth sheds some new light on game play ~ especially for those who are trying to achieve as much realism as possible.quote>

It's probably an outcome driven by the Law of Unintended Consequences [ linkie ].  I'm certainly not trying to convince anyone to play SC4 the way I do.  I don't contend (at least I hope that it comes across that way) that the way I do things here is the "right" way.  And, I guess, I'm not really on some relentless quest to recreate reality in my SC4 region.  What I do want to do is to develop my region in a way that keeps my options open to be able to do certain things that I would foresee down the road in that region six months from now.

You know, that in itself is an incredible statement.  It takes an hour or so to play a good game of Monopoly [ linkie ] or Scrabble [ linkie ].  Probably three to play Risk [ linkie ] or Tikal [ linkie ].  A week or two to ascend a character in NetHack [ linkie ].

    nethack01xh3.jpg

Oh, sure- you can turn right around and start a new game.  But, even though it's still Monopoly or Nethack, you start from scratch.  I've been playing the same SC4 "game" now for about 10 months, including the time before I started this CJ.  3RR has actually become part of playing the game.

John (Darmok - Anduin Valley Revisited) has played the same game for over a year and a half.  Fred (mrbisonm - Nexis of Genesis) is north of three years (NoG, the CJ, will be three years old this coming January).  That's, IMHO, phenomenal.

Other CJs, though, show cities coming and going over a matter of weeks or a few months.  What's the common denominator in being able to build and stick with a region for substantial amounts of time?  In my view, it's building to some standard towards some sort of goal.  A grounding in RL scale and experience provides that sort of framework for me.

MPM, thanks so much for your first post on 3RR.  Come back any time!

Gaston:  Well, I thought I'd caught all your posts of the past few days in my reply in the previous post, but I missed this one.  Sorry.

Anyway, you indicated on 10-13 that you were able to work out for yourself the method I've developed for creating linkies.  Good for you!  I didn't mean to leave it to you to figure it out on your own (like everything else, I was in the process of getting around to it) but I often find that learning something through one's own trial and error efforts often is a far more enriched educational experience than simply being told the answer.  Again, as our Aussie friends say, good on 'ya!

Here's a short tutorial as to the steps I use, along with a suggestion or two concerning tweaks.  Let's say I wanted to create a linkie to the Wikipedia article on the Society for Creative Anachronism [ linkie ].

I start by typing the text I will use for the linkie followed by the "[ linkie ]" device I use.

    step01ny7.png

I then navigate to the web page to which I want to link and select and copy [ Ctrl ]-[ C ] the page address from the address bar.

    step02cz1.png

I then select the text that I want to use as the link by left-click dragging the screen cursor across it.  Note that this makes the "Insert/Edit Link" icon (the small globe with the chain link in front of it that is circled in green in the pic) become active.

    step03wr0.png

Left-mouse clicking on the "Insert/Edit Link" icon  brings up the "Link" web page dialog box.  Paste the copied link into the "URL" field.  Note that what you paste may not all appear or may be automatically shortened.  Don't worry- this is OK.

    step04mg0.png

If you clicked "OK" at this point, you'd have your linkie.  But a final tweak is really appreciated by your readers, as Silvio (Rayden - Els Pirineus) once pointed out to me.  Take a moment to click on the "Target" tab of this dialog box, then select "New Window [_blank]" from the "target" drop down field.

    step05vr9.png

Click "OK" and you're done.  This last step will make the link open in a new window, as opposed to replacing the contents of the current window, which can be quite off-putting.

So, there you have it.  Enjoy.

That dog must make his own law.... is he???? 2.gifquote>

Well, as much as I'd like to take credit for a really sly reference [ linkie ], I can't.

We were told Murphy was, well, Murphy when we picked him up from the Puppy Rescue folks.  We've made the connection at home (the phrase "law unto himself" also comes to mind), but I think that's the first time I've heard it from anyone else.

Take care.  See you 'round AVR.

EDIT: missed another 3 updates on page 35. Congrats with 1.000 POSTS!!!! quote>

Heh.  How'd you miss them, my friend?- I left them out in plain sight...

That raises a good point, though.  3RR's back pages are not static.  As I get new info on something that was already done, I always try to return to where the information was presented in the first place to update.  That's pretty hard to catch, sometimes, when most folks' assumption is that the new stuff comes at the end.  I'm thinking of ways to alert readers when new material is added on prior pages.  One thing I will do today is put the date of the last update to each post in my hotlinked table of contents [ linkie ] and put an "UPDATED" notation when something new is added.  So, on the "one more thing to do" list, add check the 3RR table of contents every few visits or so.  You'll be glad you did.

Thanks for the mention of reaching 1,000 posts.  The credit, though, belongs to you and all those others who have seen fit to comment here.  I've said it before and I'll repeat it here- if you post once in this CJ, as far as I'm concerned, you are a 3RR regular with a friend in Alaska.  It's just great to have so many friends.

UPDATE:  (10-17-06 at about 11:40 a.m. AST GMT-9)  Well, this is really strange- it appears the earthquake stuff in the middle of this comment was somehow scrambling it.  I've now separated the two and will continue further replies in a new post later today.

UPDATE2:  (10-17-06 at about 11:50 a.m.)  Scrambled font sizes, weird line breaks- maybe the quake scared my 'puter witless.  Ahhh, well.  We'll just go on from here.

    Later.

Well, I've never experienced an earthquake, but I guess it must be scary, what with the lack of warning you get. At least with hurricanes, you have a few days to prepare, and local news taking all your favorite t.v. shows off the air in order to provide non-stop coverage of people buying wood at the Home Depot and some correspondent standing on a vaguely windy beach screaming at you about the dangers of standing on vaguely windy beaches. Not that I'm bitter.

And I figured Alaskan temperatures would be a bit more extreme, but they still look cold as hell to me. I mean, your summers probably hit the Low temperature on a winter day in Miami...

    Anywho, 'till next comment,

    Andr
