r/simcity4 Subreddit Support Thread

Hi everyone-

If you've been over to r/simcity4 over on Reddit in recent times (or even not-so-recent times), you've probably noticed there have been a number of issues over there, particularly with certain problematic users seemingly running amok, and the subreddit generally feeling long in the tooth.

Up until Sunday afternoon, the subreddit had just one active moderator (myself), with only limited permissions to lock/remove/sticky posts and edit the wiki. Unfortunately, all I could effectively do was play whack-a-mole with the recent troublemakers, since I did not have permission to ban users.

I also lacked access to Mod Mail, to which I myself had sent a couple of messages asking for assistance from those with full permissions.  One of the now-inactive (and now-former) full moderators ignored the first from a few months ago, and proceeded to instead sticky a many-times-over reported post from one of the recent problematic members I had requested assistance in handling, which really encapsulated the issues with the place prior to this point in time. I also could not divulge just how limited my powers were during the mess this past week over there, lest the miscreants use that knowledge to take further advantage of the lawless state of the subreddit.

After following the appropriate procedures, I was granted full mod permissions from Reddit, and have started the initial tasks of "redeveloping" the subreddit and trying to bring some sense of normalcy back to it.

My first steps have included updating/codifying the rules and removal reasons, bringing on my long-time NAM Team and Simtropolis Staff colleague @Ulisse Wolf as a full moderator, and banning the recent troublemakers from the subreddit (one of whom had already earned a site-wide suspension). Ulisse has already hit the ground running with his new role, adding user and post flairs, image support in comments, and fixing up the links section, among other things.  In the coming days and weeks, the plan is to rebuild the moderation team, add guides and more, to make r/simcity4 a more inviting and engaging space to discuss SC4, and we welcome input on the next steps toward doing so.

This announcement is about the new policies that the SimCity 4 subreddit has applied inherent to X / Twitter links that have been banned from the subreddit with immediate effect.

Also as a compensatory measure the live chat of the subreddit has been enabled allowing mayors to communicate quickly to exchange information and improve cities.

Just to note for anyone wondering, this policy change does not apply to Simtropolis.

As long as offsite social media links conform to site rules, Cori and I see no issue with them. (Especially since direct links to Twitter/X still work without an account.)
