#20yearsSC4 Challenge
A tribute to the creativity that gives us to SimCity 4

 

The new challenges will touch on various aspects of the game with and without NAM. Some of the challenges will be very challenging and that is why they will last longer but other challenges will be easier and last less. The main purpose of these challenges is to engage the community in a fun way and at the same time have them learn new gameplay styles and specific building techniques. New challenges will be announced over the months that you can participate in, but now let's go over the first challenge in detail and especially a tribute to 20 Years of SimCity 4.

 

The Challenge

The challenge we have decided to give is very simple but at the same time challenging. The challenge is: Creating a beautiful city/landscape using creativity to celebrate 20 Years of SC4

The main purpose is to use the creativity that SimCity 4 gives us to create beautiful cities and / or beautiful landscapes. Here are some examples that you can take inspiration to understand the meaning of competition:

Requirements

The requisites to participate in this competition is to have Full NAM or NAM without RHW (No images using NAM Lite are accepted) and other mods are allowed as this competition is reserved for players who have modified even heavily the game. For players want to play SC4 Vanilla with NAM Lite there is a challenge especially for you and you can see it here.

Instructions 

To participate you must post your images within this thread by February 14, 2023. All images received from February 15 onward will be excluded. From February 15 until March 15 there will be a voting phase and on March 16 the names of the winners will be published and they will receive a medal in their profile. 

 

DEADLINE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CHALLENGE: FEBRUARY 28, 2023

Attempt to recreate Arkaim, an archaeological site located in reality near the Kazakh-Russian border. This was going to be for my CJ until I realized the Arkaim in my region is just a lumber camp that borrowed the name from the archaeological site, so this one just goes into my MMP collection.

This city features the full NAM and the VIP terrain mod among others.

I have edited my post to show a little more detail. The first pic shows the scale of MountainView and if you look closely you can see the extent of the passenger rail system. As you may also notice, there are no streets, roads or highways. Even so, this is still a fully functioning city which is only possible because of the NAM and the RCImulti addon.
The second pic is a close up of the main part of the city (from the red box area) that shows a little more of how it all works and the third pic is from a different city but displays a little more detail of how I put things together.
I now have several cities (sans autos)that are all fully functioning and show that the Sims like a good healthy long walk.

This image would not have been possible without the NAM team along with everyone who has helped make SimCity 4 into the legendary game that it still is today.

The South Shore Business District sits on land that used to house the regions industrial base.  The development of a newer and more spacious industrial district southeast of Lake Eagan City led to the abandonment of this former industrial district.  This led to the decision by the local council to redevelop the entire area.  The project had two objectives: 1. To improve the existing infrastructure by expanding the grid in Central Lake Eagan City and create additional ways for commuters to enter into the expanded Downtown area and 2. To expand the amount of real estate made available for both dense commercial and residential development.

The South Shore Business District now Southern Gateway into the densest region of the Lake Eagan City MSA, which sits as the 6th largest metropolitan area in the Platte Republic.

Rockport Coal mine.

The mine is the economic heart of the region and  extracting coal since decades.
The appetite for cheap electricity and record high profit has drived the Alta.Corporation to prospect the area and expanding more and more.
All of this is made possible by the fantastic community of SimCity 4

Welcome to Poros, a small town of the 22nd century named after a small island in Greece. Poros is more like a settlement with less that 300 Sims, powered by wave power. Because of its unique location, Poros heavily depends on passenger and cargo VTOL ioncrafts for supplies and access to the other cities. A small marina is right now under construction by robots. Poros is getting more popular as a whales observation and eco-tourism spot, but strictly regulations have to be enforced to ensure that the local population of whales will not get disrupted by the town's activities. This is also one of the reasons why there is no any bridge here.

I wanted to build something really cool and epic, such as a big city of the future with arcologies and spaceships soaring around. Sadly, I'm incredible busy right now with my postgraduate studies and not only. I remember that the last time we've had challenges in Simtropolis was many years ago. Back then I had a laptop and latter a old PC, which both of them were so bad they couldn't play SimCity 4 at all. My new PC plays the game with no issues and, despite my lack of time, I just didn't want to lose another opportunity to participate in a challenge like that. So, I tried to make something creative but more humble. The only kind of editing in this picture is the addition of the cyan exhausts of the two small ioncrafts by Microsoft Paint, just for a more interesting and dramatic effect.

Midtown Manhattan in the 1930s

Midtown Manhattan's iconic skyline has changed quite a bit over the years - and in the 1930's scene pictured above, Art Deco ruled America and the Big Apple. The recently completed Chrysler Building and Empire State Building soared over 1,000 feet and both held the title as the world's tallest building. With other impressive towers such as 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the Chanin Building, 500 5th Avenue, and the Waldorf Astoria hotel all rising in recent years as well, the city's skyline was experiencing a huge growth spurt - that is until the Great Depression put everything on hold. The city's transportation networks were going through a period of change as well, with the aging elevated rail and steetcar (with all lines recreated faithfully above) falling out of favor for the subway and modern automobile - which I made sure to appropriately represent as well with a number of custom mods. As with all of my recreations, accuracy was crucial - and that meant creating a fully MMPed, to-scale Central Park - and using the FAR and wide-radius curves to great effect to recreate the park's many winding roads. And finally, to bring out the modded aspect of this challenge - not only did this recreation make use of virtually every single period-accurate BAT I could find on the exchanges, but also making a number of custom BATs to fill in holes in the skyline and some additional custom texture work/network modding on the roads to really bring this distinctive era of the Big Apple to life.

Times Square has long been one of the city's most crowded and popular destinations - and is surrounded by beautiful buildings like the One Times Square Building. In the 1930's (and up until the 1950's) streetcars were stilla common sight, running directly through the heart of the city.

 

 

The iconic Empire State Building was world's tallest building from 1931 to 1970 - and to this day it remains one of the world's most iconic skyscrapers. It's one of the city's Art Deco masterpieces.

 

 

The Chrysler Building was opened in 1930 and is one of the city's most beautiful Art Deco skyscrapers. For a brief period of time, it was the world's tallest building - only to be surpassed by the Empire State Building a few years later.

 

 

The buildings of the Rockefeller Center were completed in the 1930s and are another fine example of the city's Art Deco style during this period.

 

 

The stunning Waldorf-Astoria Hotel was completed in 1931 and was the world's tallest hotel for over 30 years.

 

 

Grand Central Terminal was opened in 1871 and has been one of the city's most crowded transportation hubs ever since.

 

 

The nearby Chanin Building was opened in 1929 and was widely known for its beautiful brick and terra-cotta facade.

 

 

The Helmsley Building is another one of the city's most recognizable buildings during this period - and is known for the road running directly through it.

Located in the heart of Manhattan, Central Park dates back to 1857 and has been an urban oasis ever since.

Offering great views of the park is The Sherry-Netherland - another one of New York City's Art Deco gems. Opening in 1927, it rises 560 feet over the southern section of the park and is one of the city's most beautiful hotels.

Bryant Park dates back to 1847 and has been one of the city's most popular spots ever since. The surrounding New York Public Library was added in 1895 and is currently the world's fourth largest library.
