What other older games do you play?

So i like to come back to the now very old Civilization 2 (1996 i think). But if you like me want to play it be prepared to have to do some extra downloads and adjustments to get it going since it´s some 32 bit system and you´ll have to upgrade it to run on a 64 bit for win 7 or 10 or whatever you have or crashes or just to get the game to run at all will be tough but there´s several work around´s usually for most of those old classics to make them working.

Also Sid Meier´s Gettysburg and battle at Antietam is a lot of fun.

One thread for promoting old but still worthwhile games to play i thought.

And i don´t just play vanilla Civ. 2 but the ultimate classic collection which got some added scenarios and not that different but a game which produces  a random map for each and every game (edit: regardless of which version you have), so it´s a whole new world every time to play around with and discover since you start in the "fog of war" so to say and though having one rather stupid AI (artificial intelligence), it can be a good match for any beginners of the game since i sure had a good competition with it before learning how to totally dominate it. Ranging from warchief\warlord something difficulty up to deity and the higher the difficulty level don´t expect the AI to grow some brain because of that but the game is adjusted more in the way to make it harder for you and giving the AI a cheat capacity (yes, but hey. It sure needs it).

But if you are like me, countless hours of fun and i recommend it.

Also Sid Meier´s Colonization might be worth looking into but by today´s standards outdated graphics for sure in most of these old games.

Edit: Thank you moderators for removing my double post and putting up with me.

I go on a rampage all over the net. Here i want to behave. I try to as best as i can. I hope.

I'm very fond of Civilization IV (far more recent than Civ II, and actually more recent than SimCity 4, amusingly enough). Despite the official publishing being already in the later expansions of Civilization VI, the Civ IV modding community is very active and still has ongoing mods in development and publication. The one I'm getting acquainted with presently is Rhye's and Fall: Dawn of Mankind. This combined mod pairs the acclaimed and very traditional Rhye's and Fall of Civilization (essentially a history simulation of major civilizations using the Civ IV content and game engine) with Dawn of Mankind, one of the numerous mods intended to add extra game content. The idea of combining both is that the original RFC is incomplete in terms of representing certain regions of the world and certain technologies and other game elements. The Dawn of Mankind content is used to fill in the gaps for RFC, while some of the goals, geography and timing of civilizations are re-worked for optimum game balance.

Civ IV is one of my all-time favorite games, and I do like the RFC mod. I think at one point I tried to download and install the Dawn of Mankind, but I never got it to work. Maybe it was a different mod, but DoM sounds familiar.

I also like the older SC games, SimCity for SNES was my first video game love and I still get a lot of enjoyment out of playing it, even listening to the music is fun.

Realized my mistake. The one I'm using is "RFC: Dawn of Civilization", mixed it up with "Rise of Mankind".

The other mod I've used is Legends of Revolution, which in essence forces players to tend well to their civilizations or else discontent and stagnance result in rebellions. Barbarian cities which are left alone for a long time end up developing as new civilizations, and tyem there's many ways to appease rebellions and thus buy time to re-stabilize the empire. A neat way to play is to start with a map with very few civilizations, or only the human player's civ, and it then fills up as barbarian cities grow, develop and civilize.

In 2015-2016, I played Minecraft 1.8 to 1.10. In that time, Minecraft is simpler than the current one: no realistic water, old resource pack, no observer block, etc. Not only simpler, the game also has been stuck in my head. This is the second time after the 1.6.2-1.7.10 era I joined multiplayer and I focus on it. I played at Azalel Nation, a local server. In the first days, I couldn't comprehend the features in the server: voting system, economy, MMO mechanics (yes, thru plugins of course), and the forum. After some while, I became active and at one point, I was a trial helper for a short period of time. It was an incredible experience, especially when I was a helper. It challenged me to control situations within a community and add new technical knowledge. After the period ends, I got into a fiasco which for obvious reason, I won't tell the story here. That's the starting point for me to be in Simtropolis. I hope I become better here.

Surely TTDLX/OpenTTD has to get a look-in here. One of my all-time favourites and something I can always come back to and tweak around the edges (especially now that OpenTTD) allows massive maps)

I still play DOOM and DOOM II.  I also like playing the Descent series (mainly 1 and 2).  And I still play SimCity 3000 Unlimited (thank you GOG!).  On rare occasions I will fire up DOSBOX and play the original SimCity or SimAnt.

I agree wholeheartedly. * OpenTTX with all its modding opportunities is really great. I especially like how you can make cargo heavier so the power of a locomotive becomes relevant. In vanilla TTD, buying anything but the fastest one wouldn't make sense. In OpenTTX, you have a motivation to get a slow heavy hauler for cargo trains and a fast runner for passenger trains. Station building options are also great, and I love how ships can be used to great effect with a few mods.

This would also be a game that's overdue for a remake IMO. Better graphics (the resolution makes it hard to see on today's screens), better AI and maybe a more advanced cargo system (actual destinations rather than freight & passengers just piling up) would be all it really needs.

I once watched a Train Fever 2 LP on YouTube and got the game from GOG when it was on sale for 9 dollars or something, but I've never really come around to playing it and checking if it scratches some of ye olde Transport Tycoon itch.

I'd also like to mention Civilization 1. Still enjoyable, with the exception of the difficulty levels. The AI remains as stupid as ever, but you'll need 5 battleships to kill a bronze-age phalanx....

As a remote (or not-so-remote) relative of Civ1, I should also mention Master of Magic. Still a great game! There's also a mod for it called "Caster of Magic" which has a lot of balance changes and new units. More recent games that come closest to it are the Age of Wonder games, I guess.

Speaking of "Master..." games, I must add Master of Orion and Master of Orion II - Battle at Antares to the list, two absolute 4X classics. MoO 1 looks pretty plain and sparse, but I gotta say the game is really great. Even in a huge galaxy, you aren't bogged down with micromanagement. That was a bit of a problem with MoO2, although I like many of the new features the game introduced. There has been a reboot of the franchise that I'm currently watching an LP of. It seems to be a mixture of the two first parts with a few new elements sprinkled in.

Another somewhat older game that I have come to like for a little short-term distraction is Future Pinball. It's a free pinball simulator and editor that enables you to (re-)create your own tables and download & play tables created by others. Many classic pinball tables have been recreated, even some from other computer games. It's great to take a break from modding. *:D

Apparently everyone forgot XCOM.

And Theme Hospital, Sid Meier's Pirates, Alpha Centauri, Elite, G-Police, Soul Caliber 2 and Myst.

Right now the only old game I'm playing is SimCity 4, but I'm planning to get more older games, such as Empire Earth, Civilization 4 and Red Alert 2.

Daaaang, good call! I sure love the old ones that didn't quite hold your hand so much and where your soldiers didn't have predetermined roles but developed their skills as they used them. Not to mention the subtle horror atmosphere - great stuff! Not without flaws, but still: immensely enjoyable, with every campaign you played writing its own story. For example, I remember that one time in Terror From the Deep when the aliens attacked my base right in the first month. :O

You're lucky to have such a dark and destructive family! * This game is so much fun as multiplayer, especially if everyone is more or less equally good or bad.

Does anyone remember Earth 2150?

Sometimes I play in WormNET. It's funny too, but in family is more equally and we can "annoy" one next to the other. *:ohyes:

Black Myth: Wukong

As much as I like BMW (not that car), it's not an old game. Still pretty good tho.

My best friend has really been enjoying Black Myth: Wukong.

I know what I said here...

But really, I just need to do what makes me feel comfortable. I dealt with a lot of stress and trauma. I tried a lot of things...and I tried some of the same things many times. Ultimately, though, I don't want to maintain legacy systems. I don't want a Nintendo Switch. I just need one computer for everything and maybe, a Lenovo Legion Go for when I'm on the go.

I have the controller adapters for old console controllers if I want to use them. I could possibly, set up a folding table in front of my computer where I could put a flight yoke, a Logitech wheel, or an arcade control panel. Oh, and I'd definitely like to get a MiSTer FPGA gaming setup with RetroTINK-4K scaler to use with my primary computer monitor.

I actually removed a DolphinBar for use with Wii remotes, as well as a Thrustmaster T.16000m joystick and a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2, from my desk before taking the photo for the post that I'm linking to below.

I'm thinking of getting a direct-attached storage unit that you can place hard drives in and plugging that into a Thunderbolt 4 card in my PC because my online backup service, Backblaze Personal Backup, doesn't support network-attached storage.

Just in the past few days, people found out that Nvidia removed 32-bit PhysX support with the RTX 50-series graphics cards. You could have a million different "retro PCs" for a million different purposes, but all that was giving me too much stress. The same goes for keeping the old game consoles.

Fun fact: Buffalo sauce contains the entire DNA sequence of buffalo, so you can clone buffalo while eating buffalo wings with buffalo sauce at Buffalo Wild Wings in Buffalo, New York. I've never tried it, though.

I play a lot of randomizer mods of old games, particularly Nintendo ones like Zelda and Pokemon. Archipelago in particular consumes my life. It is an application that shuffles the progression items of multiple games together. So collecting a Power Star in Super Mario 64 can get you the Hookshot in Ocarina of Time, for example. It's so much fun and every playthrough is different.
