Geez, I can't remember what I was running SC3000 on... seems to me it would have been '95 (I stuck with that basically until XP, with only a brief stint using 2000 - then off to Linux about the time 7 came out).   It seems like XP should be able to handle it though.   In fact, I know I did play it on XP before getting SC4, and that was before that old machine was maxed out (I have the best video card for the machine and RAM maxed out - though I run SC4 on my new machine, which is way better).

Great questions!  I don't think Virtualbox supports any kind of DirectX, only software rendering.   Not sure if that was available to SC3000, but as that old machine was nothing special - especially in those days, I'd be inclined to think there is some sort of fallback.

 

Edit: What's the disk space requirement  @CorinaMarie?   I might just have to try this out.

Another possibility would be QEMU if 98 is the OS to use.

Way back when I was still a teenager I wrote the definitive guide to installing Win98se in the 0.11.1 version of it while running XP SP3 on my physical comp. The site I posted it to is long gone, but I still have my .rtf copy. (If you happen to find it in Wayback or such you'll see my pen name since I was too scared to be me online then. I am getting over that a wee bit.)

This is the revised version of my original guide which had unresolved issues when using Qemu 0.11.0.  Please disregard the old version since I have learned many things in the interim and whitpa has compiled the 0.11.1 binaries.

In this guide we will emulate a Pentium 3 processor to set up a Windows 98se Guest which can access four IDE drives without having any nasty exclamation points in device manager and without the need for the 16 bit real mode drivers for the Rom drive.  We will have full use of the Cirrus Logic 5446 PCI Video Adapter without having to degrade to the generic Cirrus Logic driver.  There will be Wave Sound and Midi Music. We will have read/write access to a USB flash drive, to a shared folder on the host's NTFS partition (via TCP/IP), to an NTFS folder on a locally networked computer and, of course, to our hard drive image files.  Also, although no longer necessary, we will be able to transfer a file from the guest to the host via the serial port.

In short, I believe the proponents of the idea that Windows 98se is only viable under Qemu 0.9.0 and/or 0.9.1 might now be inclined to test drive 0.11.1.  This guide is written to be what I wished I could have found a month ago so that I would not have had to spend hours and hours and days and nights being frustrated whilst figuring it all out.  For those who read my 1.0 guide, please note that there is much that is the same but with subtle corrections interspersed and, of course, major changes in various places.

Interesting looking virtualizer - it'd be fun to play around with Windows 95, since that doesn't do too well in Virtualbox (always wanted to run in safe mode).

I imagine 95 and 98 would be similar install-wise. If you feel it might be some help, I could post my full, old guide. Most of my guide was the how-to part of the emulator tho that version of QEMU was so long ago it might be completely different now.

Well, mouse panning across screen has the map zipping from one end to another in a small fraction of the time it used to take, but other than that it seems to be running just fine....  Very weird feeling going back to that game, and having messed with it for few moments, I can safely say I don't miss it.  ;P   (There are *so* many more possibilities with SC4).

Yeah, while I thoroughly enjoyed 3k when it was the latest version I had, I cannot imagine going back to it now.

For the rocket propelled mouse I'm guessing there are settings for that.

Well, it's like this : SC4 needs a master to run all those NAM, SAM, SPAM, (and thank you MAM), and I forget others.
Most of you @CorinaMarie, @rsc204 @Cyclone Boom, @T Wrecks, @Tarkus, and many other gurus know how to run those MODs and LOts, but there are a lot more users that don't.

So, we go to SC 3000 or even SC 2000, (or even to Freecell), just to to cool down, and an spend a couple hours just building cities or regions, just for the fun of it. Without all that hassle of loading BATs and LOTs, with their dependencies and their dependencies. I could give you examples where it took me a whole morning (at least four hours) just down loading stuff. A least a dozen LOTs, and an untold number of dependencies and their dependencies, got hung up with ONE dependency not available. You get the picture. That's another story and topic...

So, I hope that those mentioned gurus could reach down to us noobs, newbies, and other peeps, while We try to climb up to your levels.

The good news if that is what's causing your problem an electronic version doesn't have this issue and just recently GOG has released an electronic version of SC3K

Ok, so it's been awhile since I last posted here. I kind of gave up on trying to get sc3ku to go full screen. Finally got sc3ku on gog, but only makes the screen go black then back to normal. I did manage to get sc3ku to be a little bigger in win xp mode as seen in the picture. But I cannot change the resolution in the game, as seen in the other picture. Any help with this???

Admittedly I'm not much help here as I don't play SC3K myself. I'll just mention this though...

There's a hex editing method as described by @Cool_Z which shows how to run the game in additional larger screen resolutions.

Perhaps this might just be the way forward?

It seems though how there should at least be some standard choices in the "Screen Resolution" dropdown, so I'm not sure why it's completely empty. Perhaps it's worth trying to switch between windowed mode and full screen to see if that makes a difference, and so your graphics card can be recognised.

The switching between windowed/ full screen was the first thing I tried and didn't do anything. I'll try the thing you suggested, and see if that helps.

Been there, fixed it and am pretty certain I've posted something on a previous post about it .... well hopefully I have as I'm in the process of backing up this computer as I have finally bitten the bullet and bought a more modern computer no more single cores for me ... unfortunately I've been deleting things as I go and as you can probably guess I have deleted SC3000 so am going to have a rummage back thru my previous posts, will edit this post if I find it

 

EDIT: Sorry I can't find the post its possible its on another site and if it was my site that's not going to help either as my site was shutdown last year and the contents moved over to Simtropolis ... I think I was using a command line argument to do it and maybe running it in a window but that's a guess ... sorry

Debated whether I should set up a new topic for this but have opted to post here it can also moved later.

I have volunteered to copy all the knowledge tree articles from these sites (all belong to Simtropolis) over to the Omnibus

As anyone who has visited them will realize they are using very old site software and to be honest its amazing that they still work but they do crash quite frequently these days, the priority is to make sure the contents of these sites are also available here at Simtropolis should the worse happen and the sites reach their end of life.

Currently everything is being copied over to "Other Games" in the Omnibus at some point I will also be looking at adding new categories to the Omnibus which brings up the question as to how people want to see these articles cataloged ... do you want them to still be listed in the same order they are in the Knowledge Tree, to give you an idea it currently looks like this

Be aware that I am finding a lot of damage so far I have been able to repair the articles with the help of the Wayback Website, but the other issue is the articles themselves are now in some cases no longer under the categories they should be under, again using the Wayback I've been able to locate the articles but safe to say its a bit of a mess.

There is another issue and and that's whether attempts should be made to save the files on these sites, I'm hoping someone reading this post might be willing to volunteer to take it on as project, in SC4EVER case there is only one file here

as for the SC3000 site its got a three download areas covering SC2000 cities, SC3000 cities and the SCURK section, I have downloaded a couple of the SC3000 cities and they seem to be OK, there is a download section on the STEX for SC3000 cities
