Hey Becca, nice to see you're back - I think I've forgotten to welcome you back until now. 2.gif

Nice to see you continue with that modular storage concept; I like that very much. I gather that the setup you're showing here is primarily to test how the different lots line up and combine, and that the design will be fine-tuned later, is that correct? May I ask what the status is on the BAT models? Just wondering because the models are good, but the textures are too saturated IMHO, and the roof texture also looks a bit too bright.

I'll keep popping in every now and then to check out the nice stuff you got cooking here - keep 'em coming! 4.gif

You are correct, these are a work in progress. I am thinking about trying something interesting. If I can get timed props to work, I want them to look new when ploped, and turn weathered over the years. Right now I am concentrating on getting the models done (and getting close). Still have a lot of other items to work on too. Thankfully I have lots of time 4.gif

If there is someone out there good with textures, I welcome the help.

Timed props, eh? Well, I'M not sure if you can modify props in a way that they follow one timeline and stop at the end. As far as I know, you can only make closed loops that repeat infinitely, like a seasonal tree that keeps running through the cycle spring->summer->autumn->winter->spring... and so on.

Then again, I think there are some mayor-mode trees that start growing after they've been plopped (sounds kinda paradoxical, eh? 3.gif ) and finally disappear after a while. That would be a one-way development with a defined end, but I don't know whether such a behaviour can be implemented in regular props to be placed on a lot. In any case, it would require some modders with deep insight into the matter.

One thing you could do in any case would be a customized "adhoc" prop family that would randomly cause one of several variations to appear every time a lot is plopped. That's a rather easy technique once the model variations are there, plus you don't even need to have a prop family ID reserved for you and so on...

As for the textures, I still think that particularly the red needs to have the colour saturation greatly reduced. Those yellowish roof textures could also be desaturated quite a bit, but it already looks a lot better than on the last shot! 4.gif

I played with the textures a bit more, what do you think?

The yellow still needs to be desaturated by quite a bit, as well as the red. Check the game to see if there are any Maxis examples of yellow. There might not be any, but it would give good insights if there were.

If anyone wants to request a color scheme, feel free (and if you want them done in a certian texture, feel free to send it to me). Right now I am more interested in getting the models all made, and the settings right. I still want to hear your coments and suggestions though. If anyone has suggestions for Flammibility, cost, demand, or anything else, I'd love to hear that as well.

I am thinking the yellow color is a bad idea, and will try something else.

I must agree, the modelling is great and detialed, but the color scheme does not fit... it looks almost on fire.

Here are some examples of maxis buildings:

    yellow and red buildings

these buildings have similar colors that you have (yellow and red) but more of a simcityish color scheme.

here is their color (the yellows and reds) down to the bone:

    color pallet

these weren't color corrected for batting, but they are the colors directly from the game.  Notice that there isn't any "pure" yellow that's super saturated.  Most of the colors have a saturation of about 20 to 30%.  The orangish has a saturation around 66% and the reddish has one about 50%.  So none are super saturated or too close.

Your yellow is saturated at about 70% and your red is near or at 100%.  Big difference form maxis.

I know that I look like I'm getting on you on something as small as color, but the subtle difference in color makes a huge difference in the aesthetics of your model (and it is a good model, but not a good color)

the more saturated the color, the more it will stand out.  Sometimes it's a good thing, but sometimes too much saturation and standing out is a bad thing.  The copmression service building has the most saturated color and it stands out, but the color is subtle on the heavy metal frame.  the saturation gives it the feeling of "danger" or that it's very heavy and strong.  The semi-saturatd red on the other buildng gives it a noticable effect of it's simplicity yet elegance.  Using color in the right way can give your buildngs a beautiful effect that will greatly improve quality, but misusing it can rob it of it's quality... and we all want quality, don't we?

autoVino: Thank you very much, this will prove to be very useful. I am begining to understand about saturation, and think my future BATs will improve greatly.

Along the same lines, contrast is also important.  If you look at the same buildings AutoVino posted, and other buildings in the game, you can see there is a lot of contrast, either by value (dark vs. bright) or color (opposite ends of the color wheel), or both.

Right now your building's values and color are similar, and it would probably look better if there was more contrast.

Oh, this looks much better!! Very nice. You might add a little more contrast to the red to make it pop, but this is definitely a big improvement! 4.gif

Wow a vast improvement. What a difference the change in colour has made.

Once I get the "new" version done, I'll dirty it up for those that like the lived in look.

Great progress, but with the last step you re-introduced a heavily oversturated red...

One note about the structure: Wouldn't the roof rest on those metal frames instead of hanging beneath it? Just a thought, I've never seen such a storage facility IRL...

i think the new red highlighting is a little too bright, I like the one you had on 1/24/08. I hope you will decide to improve it! But you don't have to. I hope you continue to build these awesome buildings!

Right now I am working on the fencing, and other items, and will revisit the red before I complete it.

T Wrecks: I value your input greatly, however, many of the all metal storage centers around here, do have the frames over the roof and wall pieces.

Ah, so they really look like this. Ok, that's good to know, thanks for clearing that up. 2.gif

If I go a few days with out posting here, it is because I am working on the LAR as well. I tend to work on multiple projects at once, so i don't get bored so quickly.
