Brazil, Uruguay, Nigeria, Germany, Netherlands, Greece, Argentina, and Belgium.

I agree with ROFLyoshi and say that it'll be Germany and Argentina in the final match.

I think France, Brazil, Netherlands and Argentina will make it to the semi-finals. And maybe the finals will be Brazil vs Netherlands.

Argentina have Messi, but the Netherlands have Van Persie and Robben.

France has looked a bit more impressive than Germany, though I suspect a good proportion of these matches are going to be determined by penalty shoot-outs, in which case all bets are off.

My money remains on the Netherlands.

If you look at the table, you will see the following trivia:

    • All the "big soccer nations" with exception of the Netherlands and Argentina are on the left half of the scheme. They will eliminate each other before they encounter one of the underdogs (or Argentina)
    • I think it's likely that France and Germany both win their games (which also eliminates every African country still left in the competition). But then they face each other. Two strong neighbouring nations and highly potential title candidates have to face off here and one has to leave the competition early.
    • There are two other neighbour country face-offs possible before the finals: the Netherlands - Belgium and USA - Mexico. For this to happen, both the country and its neighbour have to eliminate the other neighbour couple in this round.
    • Whatever happens, Brazil will only encounter South-American nations up to the semifinals. Same goes for the other three in that group (Uruguay, Colombia and Chile), obviously.
    • I go on holiday to the USA on July 7. It is possible to see a possible semi-final between the Netherlands and the USA while I am in the country of our competitor (awkward!) :P

For me, the most likely final scenarios in my eyes:

    • Brazil - Argentina
    • Brazil - the Netherlands
    • Germany - Argentina
    • Germany - the Netherlands

    Best,

    Maarten

Well, I see Germany and Brazil are on the same side, so they can't play the final. I have no doubt that Brazil will make it to the final, because of its gameplay, and they're playing home (we all know the advantages of that). Still, I expect Germany can surprise them on the semifinal.

On the other side, the Netherlands look like the most solid candidate. Argentina, even though are winning, their gameplay isn't that solid. And Belgium, despite being a good and young team, can be a bit unexperienced.

The most likely scenarios are Germany-Netherlands or Brazil-Netherlands. And I'm pretty sure that, with that home factor, it's going to be the second option.

In 3 hours Brazil vs Chile in Mineirão, Belo Horizonte! It's going to be a very difficult match, Chile has a wonderful team this World Cup, Brazil didn't find itself yet, but I trust my country!

What? That bracket for the Round of 16 is confusing for me. I guess I didn't get the updated version. FIFA does not want CONCACAF to win the cup.

In that case, Netherlands are my favorite now.

Meanwhile, we are going into extra time as Brazil and Chile are tied 1-1. Will the deciding goal make its long awaited appearance or will we go to the infamous penalties to decide?

Penalties, those suspense and drama filled penalties. For me, this could be a very tight victory for either team. Both goalkeepers have made amazing saves, we'll see that happens.

Double post here, but Brazil has survived another round in penalties 3-2. Chile is going home.

Here's an interesting observation, Chile tied at minute 32. Brazil won in penalties 3-2. Now, let me do the honor of saying, prepare for "it was rigged" statements, or that numbers are a scary thing. :P

Anyhow, I'll let someone else do the honorable multi-color thing as I ain't like that. :)

Brazil has been very lucky today...Chile has done a better match and more complete, I do not know what will happen with this team of Brazil but they will need more luck in the next rounds or play better... anyway let see what happen in the next match !!

Well, forget the fact that I'm Argentinian and I want to see argentina in the finals.. But if Brazil is planning to play the finals with the level that showed today.. Well good lick with that fellow brazilians.. It was awful! I can't believe that child actually played so good! And to be fair.. At 119 chile almost scored.

Now, I know that Brazil is the home team and everything, but either they start to play better or I really don't think they will make it to the finals...

On the other hand.. I have to agree with mandelsoft here... Some teams are going to get eliminated too soon.. Which is going to give us a lot of excitement during the whole tournament and every match will be interesting to watch...

I predict a final between Germany - Argentina or Germany - Netherlands ... I don't see Brazil playing in the finals... Not with the current level of commitment or skills... :/

What a tense and exiting game! It was played at a rapid pace, with both sides on attack and being positive. That's how football should be played.

Brazil had a disallowed goal for handball. Then Chile hit the bar in the last seconds of extra time, and the post in the final penalty kick. It just shows the small margins, and how a game can twist and turn either way.

Sure, Brazil were far from top form. On the BBC commentary it was mentioned their passing accuracy was the lowest in 12 World Cups (since 1966). Who knows whether this game will take its toll, or spur them on to improve in the next round. At the moment, getting over the line will obviously be a huge relief for the host nation.

Been off for a while..I haven't been watching the matches lately(especially after Ghana's exit. That match bored me like hell.)But today I watched the penalties of Brazil's game and the full match between Colombia and Uruguay. That first goal was top-class.It's quite unfortunate south americans teams are eliminating one another.I would have loved to see more of them in subsequent rounds.

Almost the Brazilian team kills me nervous. Never seen a game so ugly as it was today between Brazil and Chile, I hope that the suffering that we experience today serve as a lesson to not repeat  :hmph:

I don't get why everyone is saying Brazil will win. Sure they may be at home but they haven't been in good form. So far I'm 1 for 2 in predicting this :P

I have to admit that this has been an interesting experience for me.  I have a few friends that are soccer fans, including one who is a bit more into the game than most. :P  I, on the other hand, have never cared for the sport.  This time, however, I have actually had enough interest to watch a few seconds of the US-Germany game. :P

The thing I found most amusing about it all is the attitude of the office where I work.  The office has 2 TVs, both of which are tuned to Fox News and Fox News only.  However, there was apparently enough interest in the office that the TVs were changed to show the US-Germany game. :P

Ha ha! The pain has only just started! It's going to go down to the wire more and more often. I think Brazil will make it to the semi-finals, though Colombia has been exceptionally good so far. But Brazil will face either France or Germany in the semi-finals and the Brazil team's journey could end there.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Netherlands fair against Mexico. If the Netherlands put on a convincing performance then they are going all the way to the semi-finals, but Argentina will be tough to crack. But if the Netherlands can beat Argentina then they can surely beat the likely finalist contenders: Brazil, France and Germany.

How is that "soccer" is so hyped this World Cup in the US? I have never seen such motivation and audience levels about non-American football. I read about block parties, motivated à la Europe fans...

I'm not understanding that myself.    But I'm watching the Netherlands-Mexico game now to see what all of the fuss is about.    My main thought is this:

Given the weather and all of the running, why haven't these guys passed out from heat stroke?   They just had a cooling break and I didn't see one water bottle.    I understand they all need to stay in place and stand still.    Moving around would change the game.   But where are the people who go from player to player squirting water into their mouths?    How many miles do these guys run in a match?   And they are supposed to do it in this heat and humidity with no water?

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Mexico gave rankings. Almost always when a team makes 1 goal and start playing in the back it loses in the end. Today the Netherlands got a heroic victory!
