Why do we play this game?

Many recent threads I have seen and posted in have really kind of irked me.  Why are people done after 10 hours of play because they make 1 good city with high population and 10 big stacks in the bank?  You most certainly have not gotten your money's worth.  I want to start a discussion on why we all play this game.  Before we do I just want to say, WE ALL KNOW THERE ARE BUGS IN THIS GAME.  Good, now that we have that out of the way...  We also know that EA/MAXIS are working on the problems.  I do not want this thread to turn into a complaining/rantwar about the game.... or why you have stopped playing the game because you hate they released a "broken" game.  As a true Southerner (US) would say... IT AIN'T BROKE.

Do you play to make an insane amount of money?

Do you play to make eye-pleasing cities?

Do you play for massive population?

I play for all of these reasons, plus about 100 more.  I enjoy the ability to manage and micromanage every detail.  The idea that this game is more about managing than building has really grown on me.  Once region play is fixed and the global market has been worked out, this game is going to be really awesome.  Just watch, it will be so competitive.  I can't wait to watch the export price of TV's/Computers to have the floor drop out. :]

All in all... there is no particular point or achievement that says you are "done".  It is what you decide to make of it.

I really am looking forward to what everyone has to say.

Mainly because I paid to beta test this darn thing and I intend to get my moneys worth. Oh wait, to give them my moneys worth. Now I'm confused.

I usually concentrated on population with SC4 and prior, but this is totally different. Want a challenge, try to get a balanced RCI - totally different than earlier versions (there's no 22,000 occupant apartment buildings).

Want a challenge. build a city with a balanced RCI. If you even get close you'll make more than any mine and a lot faster.

I only play because of two reasons:

  1.) I love the simulations

2.) Looking forward to all kinds of mods that I know the community can make

And as another southerner...IT AIN'T BROKE!

No specializations?  What does your education consist of?  I am interested for a population city for my region!

I play cause le gasp I enjoy the game. It offers a variety of ways to play and focus on. My goals are always the same:

    1. Make a profitable city

    2. Make a happy city

    3. Make a functional specialized city

    4. Ensure that each sim has work, shelter, and shopping

    5. Make a reasonable realistic looking transportation system

    6. Try to do all that in one city while providing all necessary services.

Specialize in education, you can also specialize in gambling but I'll wait till the hotel issue taken care of for that one. I have tried oil and metals before and you can definitely make a ton of money. I'll probably try one again after I do another 600K city.

Education works with connected cities. I've had a city before with a fully upgraded grade school and high school and it took two cities into level four education. When I do education, I keep all schools operational all the time. One grade school at 950, a high school at 1800 (one class room module), a college when both are full and a university when the college has three hundred or so. I've had no problems with college or university working this way and there are a lot of posts that say the opposite. I think, just take your time and the university will do well. Population has to be 200K or better but that has never been a problem for me. Turning everything but the university off will work for tech level, but education level always drops when I tried it. with every type of education building, I have maintained a three and a half to four level which helps all the other services. Traffic does increase when other cities use it, but planning and keeping college and university close to entrance definitely helps that. I'm going to try a train station next time and see if it works. Don't know if students will use the train or not, they may just Dads old clunker.  :)

Because there's something hypnotic about building the city.  Shame you run out of room so fast.

I played the 1st and 2nd beta, I normally try to get a population of at least 100,000 while keeping it beautiful. I also enjoy the gambling and tourist specialisation. But I'm starting to try the mining and drilling specialisation. My next challenge is to get all the achievements in the game.

I play because it's insanely fun, addicting and the simulation is a treat to watch.  I tend to focus on RCI and specialize later on when I need more income for the larger services.  Most of my cities are suburban towns with a small downtown core at medium density.  My larger, non suburban cities tend to be casino/tourist towns.

I'm not into filling up a whole map with skyscrapers, I like each city/town to tell some kind of story whether it be mining, industry, a college town, tourism, etc. Even if I'm not specializing, I'll groom commerce to grow a large bank or insurance company so it tells a little story about the town's economy.

One of my fav cities I did was where I started out with just a dirt road and a low income casino and grew it up over time.  Felt like they lived through their own history moving from the old strip to the new one and eventually bulldozing the first casino as it wasn't making money anymore.  I turned off for a while before I demolished it, I was kind of sad to see it go.   :(

I play games like SimCity because of the freedom that they give. There is nothing more beautiful and fulfilling than getting an empty canvas (city plot) and a bunch of tools and just pour your soul into it.

I like it when a game has no win scenario because there is no end and a game without and end is a place of endless wonder.

No worries.   :)   I just did not want this thread to turn out like the city tile thread.  Just wanted to focus on the positive aspects and where they could take this!  Once they work the kinks with the global market, it's really game on.

why do i play SC? ....  probably because i've got a Machiavellan, Evil Overlord , Megalomaniac character ?

I mean.. i played the Sims (1-2-3) to de-stress.. there is noting more satisfying to give your Sims the names of co-workers, (l)users, ex-partners & familymembers and them slowly torture them to death... very gratifying, since you cannot do this in real life  :D

I played previous SimCity's (even the 'copter) & still play SC4 for the challenge it offers

However, i guess that with SC13, i might have unlocked my inner masochist , cuz -even if it aint broken- it definitely is not yet nowhere near to what it could/should be :noway: , but i remain optimistic and have faith that Patch 8.3 will finally solve most issues, and that the community will solve the rest by bringing us wonderful mods. (i want NAM for SC13 :) :) :)

I don't play 2013 and hope that EA will give us more choices. SimCity 4 is so much easier to mod. Also, the highways AND railroads in 2013 are outside your Ultra small city space. How do you make an organized city with such little space?

oh, and my earlier post about how it isn't broken, for some reason, I thout we were talking about SimCity 4.

A general reminder, let's keep to the topic please.
Rants about the game, which fail to add to the discussion, have and will be removed. The OP has clearly stated this is not the intended direction of the thread.

    Thanks. :)

I play Simcity 2013 because it's cities feel so alive and breathing compared to SC4 and CXL. I love the freedom the SC4 and CXL offer but I also love the living breathing cities of SC2013. I hope someday EA/Maxis will fix most of the bugs and give us region creation add-on with the ability to create bigger cities.

For me why I play this game goes back to my childhood, a very long story is to be unfold now, so if you not wanna read that, then just didn't ask the question or stop reading.

The first thing I can remember is that. When I was young. I was lonely. With no computer or other system/thing to work on. I had nothing else then a pencil and paper. Mostly to write school-crap. But I didn't do that most of the time. I just got something in my head that I wanted to get rid of so I started drawing. A lot. You can't find any book, any paper that I've touched, still actually, that hasn't been drawn. I love drawing so much. So, yeah. After some time I went on drawing cities. After I got lessons on how to draw with perspective my cities got better and more impressive. And because school was so $%&^! boring, I just drew a paper full of roads, full of cities. Because I loved it. And mainly because I was actually allowed to. Not, my art was even send to a german art event. That is how much my teachers liked my drawings. I always drawed. And still do. But nowadays it's more small weird figures then roads. Because at some point, something just snapped in me. I can't do anything right anymore, I want to be to perfect, if other people want me to do things. In this case people wanted me to draw my cities. And then, I couldn;'t anymore. Which made me really sad. Though, around that time, I got a PC. And met a friend who had a game, some sort of Lego City or so. And I did like that game so much. I was so sad that I lost that friend. That I went on looking for that game for years, still do. But I just can't find it. Which makes me so annoyed. Though in my search I came across Simcity...The first game interested me...Of course all illegaly downloaded. And I wanted more, it was to basic, so I got 2000. And this water better, but still wasn't satisfied. So I went on to SimCity 3000. And then I actually played the game for at least a week with barely any breaks. I loved the game. But after some time, I was out of ideas and also got tired. And then I found a demo of SimCity 4...And yeah, then I found this forum...And yeah I decided to buy the game...For 5 euro in a local gamestore, it was worth it. Deluxe edition..>And this I played, at least 3 years. But then I lost interest. And SiMCity Destinies came out. But compared to 4, I was just TO annoyed by the zoom...So stopped that quickly. Then came Cities XL...Which I was member of since the beta key, limited one, first part, was reached out. And I did, even if it failed, enjoy it alot. And nowadays my best memory of it was the ending of it, when everyone came together to 1 map and we all said goodbye to each other. It was just. Men one of the most enjoyable moments I had in decaded. And though, I decided to buy a hard copy of the game...And played it again for weeks. Then the update came, and another one...And yeah it went on...Played some time and stopped...And yeah. Then I did found other games to play with so stopped...But then I heard this game was comming out, just 3 months before it came out...And that made me so excited that I started playing the games I previously played again, even my drawing mood came back....And yeah then it was the day it came out. I saw tons of video's already. And I had to have it. And for 47 euro, it was great. Was one of the first buyers in my country (without pre-order). And yeah. I can't actually tell why I wanted the game so badly. But, I just liked it.

For me, I am still playing the game because, it keeps me busy, I am jobless for 2 years now. And, sometimes I suddenly get an idea and wanna play. I hate cheating, and without it's still a nice challenge...And yeah. I just...I hope with this story people get why I am still playing.

I've enjoyed the game since pre-order. All my cities are running ok and there's a challenge in each settlement to exploit the natural resources available

I'm not so much a Sims fan although I enjoy running any kind of simulation, ants being a favourite

I like the godlike view from the Ferrisch wheel, aiming to launch a rocket one day to take my people off-planet - a visit To Planet Earth if we can just escape from the bottle. Yep big comics fan too :)

I suppose it's the evil streak in me, but I just like to build up a city and then randomly destroy buildings just because I don't like the look of them :-)

I am currently playing a region for 3.0 that is very successful. I am going for minimal pollution for the 16 city region.

However, part of me wants to see how long I can maintain a city with bad pollution, TONS of industry, and other things sims hate.
