I don't really like how people use "LP" to refer to "Let's Play" when the acronym is already well established as referring to 33 RPM "Long Playing" records.

There are very few situations where you wouldn't be able to tell what is meant by context.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Muck, haHAH!  I DIDN'T google it.  I asked my wife (she is Japanese hahahaha).  But she tells me that it was used in a song, it's a kind of "Oh, I think I just fell in love!" feeling and that you could use it and people wouldn't think it's weird.  I guess since I've been married since I've been here and basically all my coworkers are married and/or over 40 I don't have a lot of opportunities to hear such phrases.  Oh, and all my students these days are in elementary or junior high school, and you know what they're like about boy-girl relationships!

EDIT: there are like a million Japanese songs called "Koi no yokan" (恋の予感), and a Deftones album!

True, but that's not why I don't like it. I don't like it purely because it bothers my OCD. :P

    156. I agree with Duke. LP means long play.

Also I only have about 5 records personally, but a sizable 120 CD collection. I only buy online when I cannot source it in a physical copy (it's a personal gripe with iTunes selling you a 320kps copy when the CD is uncompressed).

For me, buying cd's is not about quality, since I import them in iTunes and mostly listen to the digital copy. It's more the emotional aspect of possessing something tangible.

Precisely why I was asking. Believe it or not, I haven't bought this album yet. It came out last year I just haven't gotten around to it. I just listen to it on Youtube when I am so inclined. Anyway, I asked because I read that "koi no yokan" translates to "the feeling two people experience when they meet for the first time and they know they will fall in love." I was just curious if that was an accurate translation.

It's an interesting, though, how standards of beauty differ between men and women. Male models are always depicted with their chest and everything waxed, but for your average everyday man having hair all over is perfectly acceptable. On the other hand, could you imagine if a woman refused to shave her legs? Hoo... yeah, that just couldn't work. No one in the professional world would be willing to hire you and no man would want to date you. We're more or less OK with hair on men but on women we think it's disgusting.

I wonder if I got a speeding ticket today.  I was driving on the Toumei Highway near Tokyo and the box flashed at a bunch of cars around me.  It made me nervous and scared the rest of the way home.  Then, after doing more than an hour of research, it turns out that the first speed camera on the Toumei isn't until after my exit.  Man, I hope that's true.  I do not need more points on my license and another one of those stupid, idiotic classes they make us all take.

Ah, the famous license with points. It's been in the Belgian law for decades, and yet we still don't have it. It's a bit of a national joke, but we do have a lot of national jokes (I think we do this on purpose). I hope you don't have a ticket :) Are the Japanese strict when it comes to traffic safety? Are there a lot of cameras?

They put points on your license for that? Most jurisdictions in the US cannot put points on your license for a camera-generated ticket because the camera can only prove that it was your car, they can't prove that it was you driving it at the time.

Also worth noting, though, that traffic cameras are not nearly as common in the US as they are in Europe and I guess also in Japan. There are red light cameras but they are usually only found in urban or suburban areas and 24 of our 50 states do not have any.

Speed cameras are generally speaking rare. Maryland and DC have a lot of them, and Arizona also has a few, but other than that it's only a handful of small jurisdictions scattered about the country that have them. Maryland does not allow them on freeways except in an active work zone, and Arizona does not have them on state-maintained roads so freeways are by nature excluded.

Yeah, they make a big deal about it here that speed cameras aren't about revenue (pfft, riiiiiiiiight) and that their (artificially, laughably low) speed limits aren't either, so they are supposed to be signs that tell you that a certain section of highway or road is a monitored section.  But when the traffic is light and the weather is good, the Toumei and the Tokoku north of Tokyo are like the autobahn.  My car only has a 1.5L engine, so if I go any faster than 110 km/h or so the revs are uncomfortably high, but I get passed at that speed like I'm standing still, and there are even others I pass in that manner.  It's ridiculous.  Blink and there's a Porches or a BMW on your booty.

Anyways, traffic safety is a joke in Japan.  The laws are set up to immediately criminalize people for being a driver, and if a pedestrian hits you or a motorcycle hits you and it's totally NOT your fault, it is your fault because walkers and motorcycle jerkwads get automatic right-of-way.  Traffic laws are generally selectively enforced, for example, cops will not set up speed traps unless the weather's nice.  People generally follow the rules and I don't feel especially unsafe on the roads and highways (Chicago highways are way scarier than even Tokyo's), but you screw up even once and you get serious punishment.  My 33 km/h over the speed limit ticket last fall cost me about $600, plus a day off of work to take a train for a drivers' safety class that cost another $150, and since I'd only had my Japanese license for less than a year at that point, I had to take yet another $150 day-long drivers' safety class on a Saturday.  The points get reduced, but a second infraction within a year of the first one, and, well, it's not pretty.  In comparison to America, Japan is driving hell wasted on magnificent mountain roads, and America is driving heaven with straight, boring roads.

    177. We can have demerit points taken off us on speeding cameras in Australia. However this can be waived if you can prove it was someone else driving. In fact, it's common practice to get someone who hasn't lost demerit points (ie. family or a friend) to come forward claiming it was them driving, and they take the rap whilst you reimburse them a fine.

I have no idea what the demerit point system is for learners. I have no intention of finding out soon...

Don't really see speeding cameras here in Pennsylvania.  When I was driving down to Baltimore, however, there were more speeding cameras in the state of Maryland than I had seen anywhere else before.  Guess it's just different place, different customs.

There are a lot of speed cameras in Belgium, approximately 2000. If you would take the Flemish region, the proportion of cameras/1000 inhabitants would be even higher. We have more speed cameras than a country like the Netherlands, which has 7 million inhabitants more. (But just this month it was in the news that it's very easy to not pay your ticket, so 1 in 3 people simply don't pay and this has no consequences for them whatsoever...)
