The Stans and the Caucasus at least have some direct historical tie to Europe because they were part of Soviet Russia until 1991. The E-road system extends into these countries for this reason.

Israel was never part of a European country unless you count the hand the British had in creating it, and the fact that most of its current residents had ancestors who fled Europe in the 30s and 40s for obvious reasons.

Broadcasters that are active members of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) can participate in the Contest. Membership is based on the 'European Broadcasting Area', defined by the International Telecommunication Union. This includes countries bordering Europe and looks like this:

640px-European_Broadcasting_Area.png

The reason why most of the countries at the border of Europe don't participate is Israel. Morrocco participated once, but that was in a year that Israel didn't participate. Libanon once wanted to participate, but they have laws that prohibit the broadcast of Israeli content, so that didn't work. Almost the same story for Tunisia.

That's pretty interesting stuff. I didn't know it was based on broadcasting range. I always thought it was mostly a continentally exclusive thing. That's kinda why I always wondered why Azerbaijan and Israel competed. I hadn't a clue that North African/some Arab states could participate too.

45674657: (hey nice number) It's the middle eastern conflict, not going be solved soon :P

Although I don't want this to turn into a political debate as we have the threads for those, wouldn't Europe have a bigger market if Israel wasn't to participate and the surrounding countries were to?

Yes, nice number, but a pity that that's not the actual number of your post :P

I think sponsorship and ads don't play a very big role in the Eurovision Song Contest. Most participating broadcasters are public companies. There are of course some big sponsors, but they don't have a prominent place (you can see their logo on the website and in the credits on tv). There are commercial breaks that allow broadcasters to broadcast ads, but this is up to the broadcaster. VRT in Belgium doesn't show ads (because it is financed through taxes), other broadcasters do. So the only market that matters to them is their own country. The Contest is financed primarily by the broadcasters and the organizing tv station.

Whenever I watch Cinema Sins doing a movie I like, I always end up loving it for every single reason it's sinned.  The Running Man is a perfect example.  No, it wasn't Citizen Kane by any stretch of the imagination, but  by god that movie was awesome and ever sin it got dinged for was just another reason it was so awesome.

Sometimes making fun of a movie is more fun than just watching it. My sisters and I have been known to go all Mystery Science Theater 3000 on movies as we watch them.

I find CinemaSins to be a little too harsh.  It sounds weird because I'm a longtime AVGN fan (as well as an avid Nostalgia Critic fan).

Also, on this President's Day, I've memorized all 44 presidents in order.

My cousins, brother, and I were just watching King Kong (the newer remake) and we were giving Kong dialogue as if he was an intellectual philosopher. It made it more interesting.

That's kinda related to making fun of movies.

I love how empty the Ocean City boardwalk is when it's 15 degrees with 40 mph wind gusts. Normal people go there in the summer when it's crowded as hell. Awesome people like me go in February when we can still poke around and see everything without other humans getting in our way. :P

Big fan of MST3K. I've been watching The Wire the past month or so. Again, big fan.

I was lucky enough to be a high school student when MST3K was still on the air, so at that time I was prepared to get most of the jokes.  I'd like to go back and watch it again now that I have a bit more experience to draw from.

4675: I did a quiz online, and memorised all but Pierce, Hayes and Coolidge. Namely all the " forgettable" presidents. Not bad for someone who isn't American!

As for Australian PMs, it would go Barton, Deakin, Watson, Reid, Fisher, Cook, Hughes, Bruce, Scullin, Lyons, Page, Menzies, Fadden, Curtin, Ford, Chifley, Holt, McEwen, Gordon, McMahon, Whitman, Fraser, Hawke, Keating, Howard, Rudd, Gillard and Abbott. For simplicity's sake I haven't included second and third terms, as we have had several prime ministers serve non consecutive terms.

I have no idea about Belgian Prime Ministers. I know there was Martens (the guy was leader of nine governments), Dehaene, Verhofstadt, Leterme, Van Rompuy, (Leterme again), Di Rupo and now Michel, and that's about it. I don't know the correct order before that. I know many names, but the history of Belgian governments is quite complicated. I mean, look at this: 12 governments in 15 years!

    Tindemans II, 1977-1978

    Vanden Boeynants II, 1978-1979

    Martens I, 1979-1980

    Martens II,1980-1980

    Martens III, 1980-1980

    Martens IV, 1980-1981

    M. Eyskens, 1981-1981

    Martens V, 1981-1985

    Martens VI, 1985-1987

    Martens VII, 1987-1988

    Martens VIII, 1988-1991

    Martens IX, 1991-1992

The only reason I know the US presidents is the Animaniacs song about them.

Similarly, the only reason I know the English (and after 1707 British) monarchs since William the Conqueror is the Horrible Histories song about them.

William, William, Henry, Stephen, Henry, Richard, John, oy!

Henry, Ed, Ed, Ed, Rich two, then three more Henries join our song,

Edward, Edward, Rich the third, Henry, Henry, Ed again,

Mary one, good queen Bess, Jimmy, Charles, and Charles, and then,

Jim, Will and Mary, Anne o'Gloria, George, George, George, George,

Will, Victoria, Edward, George, Edward, George six,

and Queen Liz two completes the mix.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.
