Also, it isn't really fair to use New York as a comparison point as it is by far the most densely populated city in the US - its density is not typical of an American city, it is exceptional.

Oh, what fun is there in making sensible comparisons? :P

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

1323: Here's a gun fact to compensate, Australia and Tasmania actually share an 85 metre border.

Tasmania and Victoria, I assume he means.

And it's a land border, on the now aptly-named Boundary Islet.

Tasmania is south of Australia, right?

The southern reaches of New Zealand are further south than Tasmania. But still not as far south as the southern tip of South America - which, get this, is roughly the same distance from the equator as Moscow (55 degrees and change). South America has a lot of north-south to it!

1330: Think of it as our version of Point Roberts. They set the border of the sea at a certain latitude, but failed to realise it actually cuts through a bit of land. Either way the island is uninhabited, useless and only serves as an interesting point for pub trivia.

Uninhabited, you say? Guys I'm thinking of setting up a new town right on that border. Who's with me?

That depends. Is there punch and pie?

    1335: There's nothing. It's just a stupid rock.

I couldn't imagine the need to settle it, it has no natural resources and is too remote.

no, but I wish I could've. I read that the Chrysler Building's observatory was closed in 1931 after the Empire State Building was completed, because it would be a bigger attraction.

I also read that ! The observatory was in the spire itself, you could learn things about the solar system  :]  (I have a book with all the pics of the construction and how it was from 1329-1391)! But what I meant is: if someone where outside of the 61st floor behind the steel eagles ( I think only photographs and journalists can go up there.... :( but maybe someone was there anyway )

New York has become laughable over the past 10 years, its really sad they used to be one of the shining points of the country......

Bloomburger's tenure has been nothing short of disastrous.

As of last year, you can't. Someone snuck up there, did some dangerous stuff, and posted some pictures of it that locally went viral. As a result, now not even special guests are allowed. But, here is a picture of me up there from 2011, before that happened:

    8sc3.jpg

You have to climb out a window to get onto this ledge and it didn't look like there had ever been a door. The folks who snuck up there said it was an observation deck, but I don't think the space was ever intended to be open to the public. If it closed when the Empire State Building opened that would mean it was open for less than a year.

It has he skybox. It stretches out from the 103rd floor and looks down onto the street.

I've been trying to get to the Observation Deck at City Hall in Philadelphia, but it can hold..........

    Drum roll please....

4 people. That can't hold my immediate family. Granted, it was not built to be a big tourist attraction, but still.

1345: There is a similar one in Melbourne, which reaches out from the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower.

I know people who work in Philadelphia's tallest, the Comcast Center, which is 975 feet tall. I have been up to the 49th floor and the views are fantastic. You can see all the way to Wilmington, and up north to hel- or, Fairhill. And down to Camden and the suburbs west of the city. They have a cafe on the 44th floor, and a lounge of sorts on the 6th floor, in the 58 floor building. The lounge itself has good views of the lobby and the surrounding buildings.

Fun Fact: the world's largest screen was once in the Building's lobby.

The volcano that towers overhead has a lift you can take to the rim, then when you walk around there are very nice views of the surrounding area.  On clear days you can see all the way to Tokyo.  My lair is very small from the top.  It's a pretty cool thing, we plan on going up there again when the sky is actually clear instead of hazy and cloudy.  That's our luck, though.  We went up the Tokyo Sky Tree (SkyTree?  Skytree?  I can't remember) at the end of last month, and yeah, it was cloudy and rainy and we couldn't see any farther than a few hundred meters in any direction.  Sigh.

So it's true, you only can go outside of floor 61 by a window...
But two floors below you have a door which leads you  outside: here a picture I took (and rezized for the forum):gs3h.jpg

Circled in red, the floor I meant. Sorry you can't see it well but I'm sure there's a door (saw it on many other pics)
I think you also had a restaurant at the 66th floor: the cloud club (which has closed)

I have no idea what the status of that lower ledge is. I do however know that the highest occupied floor is currently home to a dentist's office (and he has a very cute receptionist, I must say), and that there are several unoccupied floors above that in the spire which are used as mechanical rooms. Getting to the very top of the spire requires climbing several ladders and there is a hawk that nests up there.
