1182: These are all references to Pulp Fiction. One of my favourite movies, although it is a little bit 'adult'.

Showed my girlfriend it the other day, cause strangely it's the only Tarantino Film she hadn't seen :P All this talk has got me a craving for a Big Kahuna burger and some Sprite to 'wash down that tasty burger'.

Oh. I don't really watch movies. I just play Sim City, Zelda, EarthBound, and Minecraft. And when I'm not playing either of the four I'm posting on the Internet about one, or all four at the same time.

The excessive violence in Pulp Fiction is an inherent problem. If a particular viewer is prepared to tolerate such violence, they view the film without prejudice. Without such an outlook, one might find it hard to appreciate the film. But, the real reason some folks in this thread feel left out is because the movie pre-dates them. Can you believe that movie will be 20 years old next year?

When it was in theaters, I told my dad I was going to a movie with some friends. he asked what movie. I responded with "Pulp Fiction." He said "No way. You're not seeing that movie."

    I was 14 years old.

9 months later it was On Demand on behalf of our cable provider. he asked me if I wanted to watch it with him. He had no recollection of his aforementioned disapproval.

    C'est la vie.

1185: True, it's older than me for sure. How would you get into cinemas seeing it as a 14 year old though? Wouldn't it be R?

Either way, I loved the non-linear storyline and the showing of events from multiple viewpoints (like the stickup scene we are referencing).

Pulp Fiction was incredibly quotable and every out-of-order scene was totally memorable.  It's actually the only Tarantino movie I like.  I was bored by Kill Bill and Roxy Brown or Jackson Brown or whatever that movie was called.  I haven't yet seen Inglorious Basterds, although it's on my radar, and I won't bother with Django because I'm not much of a fan of Jimmy Foxx.  No, wait!  Jamie Foxx.  Whatever.  He's gonna suck as Electro in Amazing Retcon 2.

It wasn't until the late 90s that theaters in the US started denying kids entry to R rated movies without a parent. And even now, it's only company policy among major theater chains. There is no law requiring it.

    I really haven't seen any r-rated movies.

I made a movie/play reference in my status and apparently nobody got the reference.

There was a time when I went with some friends to see an R movie and I was denied entry while my friends were not. I had to buy a ticket to Shine and then just go in the other theater.

Pulp Fiction and Wolf Creek are probably the only R rated movies I've seen.

I don't know when our laws come into force, but we have 5 main categories, G (General viewing), PG (parental guidance advisory), M (mature). The first 3 are technically unrestricted, but MA requires one to be at least 15 or with a guardian to see, whereas R is 18+, no exceptions.

Interestingly, we did not have a R classification for videogames. This lead to games either being forced to be censored, let slip or simply banned.

The key difference is, those ratings are issued by a government agency, correct?

In the US, the government has nothing to do with movie ratings. They are rated by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which is a private organization consisting of people in the industry. Getting a movie rated is completely voluntary - most independent films are not rated, as are any movies which were made prior to the ratings system being conceived.

Despite the government's lack of involvement, however, the system is nonetheless set up to be enforceable via civil law. Getting a movie rated is not mandatory, however a theater may not show a movie without proper licensing (under copyright law), and as a condition of being granted such licensing by an MPAA company, theaters generally must contractually agree to not show movies that aren't rated, not let anyone under 17 into an R rated movie without a parent, etc. Small local theaters may not always follow these rules because they can fly under the radar, but any major chain is going to lest they get sued.

The rating system is from the 1960s and it replaced an earlier moral code from the 1930s, which in turn was created in response to public criticism about objectionable content in movies - Hollywood essentially decided to regulate themselves in order to fend off the threat of being regulated by the government. It should be noted, though, that it is very difficult to outright ban a movie in the US, since they are considered free speech under our 1st amendment. The only real exception is laws about obscenity which are difficult to enforce due to being subjective, and are only ever used against companies creating ridiculously over the top pornographic material.

1195: Seems like such a hassle having it done in a private way. If a film doesn't have classification here, it can't be shown. Simples.

In Belgium there are only 2 real categories: kids allowed ('KT') and kids not allowed ('KNT', which is +16). I doubt I've ever seen a 'KNT' movie, I'm not really for the bloody kind.

One of the criticisms of the MPAA is that their standards for how ratings are decided upon are not published and it is kept secret who reviewed any given movie. A government body would not get away with such lack of transparency but a private organization can be as secretive as it wants.

You have, however, made the key point as to why I prefer the US method: your government can ban movies from being shown by not rating them. That is blatant censorship and blatant disregard for freedom of speech.

The movie I referenced was Les Miserables

    ---

The MPAA only has one person decide? It should be a group who decided, like a group sees it and they vote on the rating. That would be much more logical.

There is currently a documentary on Netflix that I have yet to watch describing the secretive methods of the MPAA. The description led me to believe there is some controversy involved but as I said, I haven't seen it but it's there if anyone else is curious. It's called This Film Is Not Yet Rated and it came out in 2006.

Movies are reviewed by a committee of people, not one person. But who is on that committee is secret, as is any documentation about what they do other than their ruling on what the rating is.
