Tips on getting Reputation

If you don't have a CJ nor do some BATs, then your best bet will probably to post pictures in the city building concepts forums ("show us your..." threads). Gorgeous scenes, interesting transit layouts, superb trashy ghettos, infinite RHW spaghetti... You get the point. The more innovative you are and the more your picture looks appealing, the more you'll get rep.

Alternatively, you can help me. I always give rep to people that answers in a useful way to my questions.

Cookie for the 1000 posts, btw.

Say nice things about my work or make me laugh. I always give out reputation for those things. :)

Make emotionally charged posts in the Sc2013 forums about servers and EA... :P

Seriously though, don't do that, and don't worry about rep either. It's always nice to see that people appreciate your posts, but at the end of the day It's not that important.

Keep in mind that reputation number is not necessarily a reflection of your quality. Many older users have many quality posts and a high post count, yet little reputation because they were posted well before the system was implemented.

Haven't you asked the same question in another thread already? How many more times are you going to ask it? I even remember making a remark that was rather similar to cockatoo's. Why go through all that discussion again? Why that obsession with post count and reputation points?

Rep points are like respect and love: they take an effort to be won BUT you cannot force the situation. Nobody will +1 something if they don't feel it. Posting cool CJ stuff, BATting or making people laugh will get you some rep points, BUT posting for posting and BATting untextured boxes will grant you no points. People tend to realize when an effort is hard.

Reputation has nothing to do with the number of posts you make.  It is the helpfulness and usefulness of the posts, BATs, etc.  I fail to see why you are concerned.  This site is not a popularity contest, nor does it contain one.

One should keep in mind that the purpose of this site is conduct a grand conversation with persons interested in city building game/programs.  It could be called a fan site, but I think it goes far beyond that.  One of the best ways to increase your reputation is to be a problem solver.  Chip in in the Bugs and Technical Issues sections, and things will happen accordingly.

As for reputation versus posts, I have 8.6% on that issue, and I don't really care.

Well, I guess starting a discussion about reputation looks like an effective way! :thumb:

People can give reputation for a variety of reasons, for helpful to humorous posts, or even just at random. It can help to post in a variety of areas, and not just stick to a limited group of forums. Some areas are known to be more active than others. Where there's more activity, the chance of being given reputation is greater. Differences are also apparent between locations. In particular, the SC13 forums tend to attract a high level of reputation at the moment, while the off-topic & forum games sections traditionally do not. Posting in non-forum areas can also help, such as the STEX comments, CJs, and news articles.

But really, Cockatoo's spot on -- it's only a number. It isn't an indication of how accepted you are in the community, and doesn't have any substantial meaning. Ignore the post-to-rep ratio. As forum posts aren't the only way to gain reputation, this figure doesn't really say much.

    Some general advice:

    1. It's best to not campaign or go looking for reputation. People will quickly figure out this tactic and refuse to give any.
    2. Quite often, the best way is to try and be an active, helpful and contributing member.
    3. Be patient --  in our current set up, negative rep can't be given (unlike some sites!)

Yeah, I do have to credit you for most of that post. I did remember reading it and thinking it made sense, so I reposted the sentiments here.

Didn't realise it was the same guy asking though...

Saturn64, you really should stop worrying about ratings, stars, rep and other such things.

Or saying SC2013 sucks on a news article on the home page is another good way to get 13 rep.

I'll be honest, I hold the moderators hostage and force them to hook me up with tons of reputation points, they'll do anything when threatened with a wipe of their plugins folder  believe I'm one of the few around here with nearly 1,000 reputation points and about half as many posts. The trick to it is useful posts, or things that others wish to see (e.g. BATs); essentially something that contributes positively to the community. You will find that many of those with a great number of reputation points are those which BAT or mod. It's explicit that those two criteria are causative. I mean, who wouldn't give a thumbs up to a beautiful piece of architecture or coding, such as int he form of the NAM

Bipin, I was gonna +1 your post because it made me laugh, but since you have nearly twice as much rep as posts I'm not going to.

    Only joking......I'll think about it.

The site is not a popularity contest. But if you want more Reputation Points, just do the following:

    1) Make helpful / insightful / funny posts.

    2) Open a City Journal.

    3) Show pictures of your work, BATs, LOTs, etc. Mods that do something amazing or fix bugs and annoyances are always welcome.

    4) Be Hellken.

I believe the STEX deserves a reputation system to reward people who do wonderful things for this community. I visit this site to look at people's great creations.

What would you like in the STEX besides the five star system?

The 5 star system is good. However, I believe we should have a certain incentive system to reward people who submit quality work in some way. People who take time to upload important mods or quality BATs deserve praise for the effort. A City Journal that gets upvotes of 10+ is usually the collective effort of the person who puts it together and the people who upload custom content.

    ie. 4  5-stars = 1 vote

That should only count for 5 star uploads. Anything below that will not get any rep. votes to ensure people submit well done work and make sure they test before releasing.

Satisfaction, comments and the number of downloads should do it.  The rep system is far overblown by some members.  Maybe it should simply be discontinued.

Agree wholeheartedly. It only works if everyone is objective and gives rep for the same reasons, but noone is. Consequently you cannot tell if someone is actually good for the rep they have or if they've just been rep-whoring.

From experience I associate certain people with ongoing quality posting, so I am more likely to read what they write. Rep doesn't even come into it.

It's also highly likely that there are a lot of people who don't know that there is a reputation aspect to the community, and definitely don't understand how to add to another person's reputation. I agree that it doesn't really add anything to one's experience as part of the community, nor does it truly reflect one's abilities, creativity, or involvement. Probably would be a good idea to eliminate it, but I wouldn't make it a priority.

It can probably turned off with a simple switch in the code.  If the code itself needs to be eliminated it can be done at leisure.

Except for one little detail, you con not rely on the people to not abuse the system. Trust me, they have, and they will(see the first quote in my sig.)

I did contribute to the community and I also addressed a problem with people rating STEX content based solely on their own playing style and personal preferences. That's why became an issue. 5 stars? I thought I was doing good with 4.

As you can see, been there, done that, and there ain't no cure.
