Maybe we have some images of what we imagine future cities might look like. My view of cities is very highly industrial and hi-tech like some of Somy's creations.

A civilization that refuse to realise that it's connected to the environment is a civilization doomed to fail. This is why I strongly believe that the future will be greener, with cities that not only will be not cut from the environment, but they'll be parts of it.

More exotic structures, like arcologies and orbital colonies, are always welcomed.

Green cities, Terring? That idea is great for rural areas and beach resorts but I like the industrial future style more especially for big cities. Huston's and Militant Radical's pics are very good examples of this style.

I'm not particularly a fan of any style, green futuristic concepts are really cool also I think. I just saw those pics I posted just yesterday while I was doing a search for something else so I thought I'd post them here.

This is for your green theme Terring:

I'd love to see some of these in SimCity

Yes it is. This is the Lilypad Concept, designed by architect Vincent Callebaut, a completely self-sufficient floating city that would accommodate up to 50,000. The Lilypads could be located close to land or set free to follow the ocean currents wherever they may lead.

I think it's a good idea to post here not only fictional concepts like Mass Effect fan art, but also actual proposes from engineers and architectures like Le Corbusier. Here is a good example. This design for Beijing imagines a skyscraper that brings parks and other green spaces to heavily developed areas, where a giant balloon would suspend it in mid-air. This is not a cool piece of art, but a serious proportion.

    0208-lightpark-skyscraper-0.jpg

An another serious proportion. Want to build a skyscraper to space without it toppling over? Build a network of connected skyscrapers spanning the globe, put them in the stratosphere, and let Earth's gravity keep them up there. No ground attachment necessary. Satellites and spaceports on Earth will be a thing of the past.

    0353-stratosphere-skyscraper-0.jpg

Jellyfish-like buildings that would absorb and relegate pollutants, turning them into water or fertilizer. No kidding, this is also a serious project...

    0342-ph-conditioner-0.jpg

And finally, how about buildings with a layer of "tissue" that can be shaped, stretched, and even connected between other buildings? Now this is what I call "organic buildings".

These particular ones would look good for SC4 don't you think?

Time for a few concepts, this time from the past.

Before inventing the safety razors, King Camp Gillette (1855-1932) recommended building a gigantic city in the vicinity of Niagara Falls, made up of forty thousand buildings like these which would hold the entire population of North America. All residents of this city would have access to the same amenities including rooftop gardens in the perfectly round, precisely divided multi-functional buildings in which they would live, work, play and eat. While this design never went anywhere, it’s notably similar to many very modern 21st-century concepts for sustainable urban centres.

    retro-futurism-gillettes-metropolis.jpg

Broadacre City was meant to be an urban utopia. When the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright imagined the perfect society of tomorrow, he didn't saw highly compact and efficient high-rises, but sprawling self-sustainable homesteads. Originally conceived in 1932, Broadacre City puts each homeowner in a self-built single-family home on an entire acre of land brimming with gardens. Complete with multiple cars and personal helicopters per family, it would almost be an accurate prediction of future suburbia.

    broadacre.gif

    retro-futurism-broadacre-city.jpg

Skyscrapers in New York was not something new by 1925, so how this city may look like in 2025? The people believe that New York not only will have more and bigger skyscrapers, but also it will be the base of an aerial civilization complete with elevated train platforms and huge airplanes flying around.

    retro-futurism-future-new-york.jpg

Similar prediction for New York City, this time from 1932. A serious chaos of titanic buildings, sky bridges, aerodromes on top of various buildings and even hangers big enough to hold several zeppelins.

    newyork_2032.jpg

And finally my favourite retro vision so far, made from a '30s issue of Popular Science. All the traffic congestion neatly tucked away under the surface, leaving the street level for exclusive pedestrian use. On the bottom tier are the high-speed electric trains, next level is the fast-moving traffic lanes, and above that are the slow-moving lanes. All the garages are underground too and the whole lot is linked together by high-speed escalators. Furthermore, the buildings above aren't just for offices. On the lowest level are shops, then restaurants above, then offices, then schools, then living quarters and playgrounds, and then rooftop airfields and airships moorings.

I think it's really interesting to look back and see what people from the past thought the future would be like. The last picture especially intrigues me. I really like the design the architect created. The future he envisioned for 1950 is better than what we have now - over 50 years later than then. He was way ahead of his time, I guess.

It's also funny because it seems we always look into the future and think that it will be better than the present; that people will live in a utopian society. But that is all we can hope for in the future - that the world will keep advancing and improving.

    hi all

for futuristic city concept, i prefer terring's post better.. because i love to see how nature and technology balance..

in my imagination, future cities is more like in mass effect series settings, especially thessia

thessia architecture showed advanced civilization, yet somehow its still retro. the architecture itself remids me of calatrava's building with art-deco style touch.

    2210.mass_2D00_effect_2D00_3_2D00_thessi

in otherhands, steampunk architecture style somehow fits for industrial area for me. i love some variation for futuristic style, and steampunk architectures show me a mix of art-deco, classical, with somewhat magical, fantasy, modern, and industrial. maybe like midgar in final fantasy VII combined with

Time for a few awesome futuristic urban designs. For first, how about some vertical gardens? They could be useful for vertical farms as well.

I've seriously liked Alejandro24's stuff. I enjoy a lot this kind of cyberpunk/steampunk/dieselpunk style; everything a bit dystopic/ucronic.

Watching the scenes above has reminded me that, when I was a child, I used to read very old comic books from my mother, they imagined there how would be the world in year 2000, with flying cars, Coruscant-like, and so on. Nothing of that happened; and it makes me a bit sad to know that, nothing we can imagine now will happen in 50 or 100 years... You know, you can't fight physics and funding.

Thank's TekindusT. I really like Dieselpunk, even more than Steampunk,

because everything works with machines of the diesel era, also there are Art-Deco, Swing, Jazz, everything designed as the 30's-50's industrial designs, zepellins, trains, planes, cars, mystery, police and dectives, sexy ladies, and of course there's no dieselpunk without nazis (or fascist aesthetics) , I specially like that part. Unfortunatelly this concept are not too well developed in cities, allmost all the urban imaginary looks like Metropolis.

Clearly the future is more ordinary than we think, or maybe not.

Throughout the 20th century, legions of Miami developers pitched a science, trade, and culture park known as Interama, which is short for "Inter-American Cultural and Trade Center." This futuristic metropolis came complete with elevated aerial capsules and a thousand-foot tower accessible only by underwater conveyor-belt tubes. The closest Interama came to reality was in the '60s. The park was supposed to open in 1968 but the project stalled out over the years. It flat-lined so hard that Florida International University bought up a chunk of the land Interama was supposed to sit on. Another portion of the Interama acreage was turned into a dumping ground for toxic and medical waste.
