Time for some serious proportions!
 
The world’s first floating city is soon to become a reality. The $10 billion Freedom Ship will be big enough to fit 50,000 residents, 30,000 visitors, schools, a hospital, parks and even an airport. Since the vessel will be too large to enter any port, it will simply sail from country to country in two-year cycles.
 

 


Manuel Dominguez’s “Very Large Structure” is a huge nomadic city that can move to different locations in search of work and resources. Reminiscent of Ron Herron’s Walking City and Archigram’s utopian visions of the future from the 1960s, Dominguez’s project takes the concept of large-scale moving city further by incorporating on-board energy generation.
 

 


Russian construction firm AB Elise has proposed turning one of the world’s largest opencast mines into a futuristic domed city.
 

 


Might future settlements become entirely linear, being shaped to fit the highways rather than highways being shaped to serve the city? Might the city and the highway actually become the same thing?

Actually I will now clarify. I mean there should be no unrealistic funky pictures because we can't create them in SimCity.

This whole topic was for posting the pictures of future cities as inspiration for creating our own. We need pictures of realistic futuristic cities.  A grocery store here, a gas station there, except that grocery stores are replaced with high rise sky farms and gas stations replaced with hydrogen stations. You get the idea. They can be even  dystopian but no retro stuff.

Concerned about the cost of land in Japan, the government decided a solution would be to start building cities underground. The Taisei Corporation took the government's idea up, and developed Alice Cities. The plans included shopping malls, offices, and hotels, in 60-metre-high cylinders 110 meters underground.

A future city for me would be a bit like what already exists. Namely very efficient use of space.

 

This picture is from a football field on a roof of a building in Tokyo. The idea is great but you could really go wild with this idea!

 

 

For example rooftop gardens/parks like in this picture.

 

 

This plan is even likely to be built in the near future, this elevated bike path on top of the underground in London is a plan that was even backed by the TFL (Transport for London).

 

In the future cities should deal with the lack of space even more than they do now. I wouldn't be surprised if future cities would have a lot of projects like rooftop-gardens, cycle paths on top of existing infrastructure and extremely efficient usage of the ground below.

It is interesting that everything is so round and organism-like in most futuristic pictures. At least the utopia ones.

Theses are all very interesting ideas of the future, and I'm sure many of these might just end up becoming a reality, but that is if we have the resources to do so.. I'm not sure if we will be able to build these kinds of projects with out the mining of other planets and space rock., so what would future planetary mining facilities look like? I don't picture a dirty mining project but a mining project that is clean bright and has simple but beautiful architecture .

And with theses mining projects there would have to be a colony set up or a temporary city for the workers and their families to live, and not by the time this planetary mining was real, workers would not be there to run the machines, but instead to maintain them. When new tech rolls in replacing a man's job then ultimately it becomes man's job to keep these machines working

Terring, those were the good ol' days of Sci-Fi. I think I might have even recognized some of those images from book covers (the dime-store versions, of course). Back before all that stuff (like cell phones, small computers, talking watches, etc.) was conceived to be possible.

Now that's a great way to imagine the future. Low density towns here and there, with a multi-functional central tower in each of them. Independent homes here and there too, with a few arcologies in the background. All the above are actually islands of civilization in the ocean of trees and wilderness, connected by roads with tram lines on them and subway railroads. Look up to the sky and you'll see airships, futuristic helicopters, floating cities and hypersonic spacecrafts. Gas ringed giant planets, nebulae and binary star systems.

Please remind me why we have to stay on Earth and fight each other...
