Very nice. What sort of lens did you use for that shot?

Also _lazz, do you shoot in RAW?  I've just started to play around with it, and it takes a bit of getting used to.

Thanks.  I used a 70-200mm lens.  My camera's imaging sensor is actually smaller than the 35mm frame, so I get a 1.5x crop factor.  As a result, the 70-200 actually becomes a 135-300.  It's a bit limited in use at such focal lengths but certainly a welcome addition to my lens family.

I do indeed shoot RAW.  I used to also have my camera churning out .jpegs, but I never used them and they were taking up precious card space so I ceased doing that.  It does take getting used to, and can be at first overwhelming.  Play around with sliders to see what you can achieve.  See if the software you use to edit RAW files can utilize presets.  Then you can just tweak from there rather than from scratch.

I walked around Tampa for a few hours this morning.  I feel that these two images are worth sharing.

I really like the first photo with the water reflection!

I feel that it is hard to take beautiful photos without a beautiful subject. What you define as beautiful is up to you, but this is how I define it:

(Click for full size) These are two of m favorite photos from a recent canoeing trip of mine to the Boundary Waters Wilderness on the Minnesota-Canada border. I HIGHLY suggest a trip there for those of you who like the outdoors.

P.S. The other photos here are amazing too!

I think anything can be photographed well, but obviously beauty isn't purely about camera angles and lighting. If you shoot a beautiful girl at the wrong angle she remains beautiful but the photograph becomes ugly.

I doubt I'll have any photos for a while now as the bad weather is coming.

Here's one I shot a while ago.

I agree that anything can be photographed well.  I actually prefer photographing "ugly" or banal things compared to pretty scenes.  It's not that I don't like pretty scenes, either.  William Eggleston, a key figure in the new topographical movement, spoke about photographing "democratically" - that is to say, every subject is worth of a photograph.  I quite like that concept.

Speaking of banality, I've posted this photo before, but I did some changes in the colors and white balance.  I prefer it quite a bit to my first render:

And another that I don't think I posted before:

Jazz are you getting around on a bicycle? I'm just wondering how your moving around Tampa so much getting all these like back alley photos. I think one of the best ways to see your city is bicycle I will try to get some shots of Calgary since we got a new camera. I ride my bike here but winter is coming...

I think one of the best ways to see your city is bicycle I will try to get some shots of Calgary since we got a new camera. I ride my bike here but winter is coming...

I usually drive my car to a spot and find a place I can park it.  It's usually a free parking spot where I don't have to worry about being towed (I'll pay the parking fee, if I have to).  I usually do these walks on the weekends because weekend parking is free or reduced vs. weekday parking.

From where I parked, I just keep walking.  I might drive around the area for a bit, circling and looking for areas I can walk to, but I definitely prefer walking when I'm actually out taking photos.  I can't imagine using a bicycle.  Your area is probably more bicycle friendly, but even besides that, I'd have to keep getting off the bike, parking it, and then trying to compose a shot while making sure I don't wander too far from the bike or something, then getting back on it.  For me that'd be too much "addition" to my photo walk routine.  My feet are my number one composing tools when I need to move forward, back, left, right, up or down for a shot.

I always bring a tripod with me, but I leave it in the car unless I have something specific in mind.  It adds a bit of weight and robs me of one of my hands unless I set it down (I can strap it to my backpack, but it feels too clanky).

Sometimes I get back in the car to drive somewhere further away, if the light is critical or if it's a bit too far to walk.

These photowalks of mine can last a couple to a few hours.  I always bring a water bottle and some snacks, stopping every half an hour or 45 minutes or so for a little fuel.  I've always got my iPod with me as well - the music actually aids me in my photography.   Musical compositions and photographic compositions tend to work hand in hand for the creative process.  The music tends to increase creative productivity, aka "gets you in the zone".

I imagine walking isn't so easy in some parts or at certain times, depending on the time of year.  Here in Florida, the rain is the number one deterrent, which is why I do my photowalks in the morning during the rainy season.  For the rest of the year, I can do it during the morning or evening, when the light is best.  I'm fortunate that the temperatures here are never so extreme, so the weather (when it isn't rainy) is just about always perfect for a photowalk.

    Keep calm and take photographs.

This one is a bit of a "snapshot" really, but I don't dislike how this turned out (I'm a huge fan of the high ISO performance of my camera as well)

Thanks, I would have loved to take one with the sun/rising setting behind the hills but I would have had to be there much later/earlier, temperature might have been more bearable though.

About Niagara Falls: I was born there, and lived there until age 19 and was an avid photographer at the time.  Fun place.  How did you like Table Rock House, Hal?  Did you go down to the Cave of the Winds?  You can get a shot from half-way down the cataract from there (horseshoe).  Be sure your gear is waterproof.
