Wow.  Looks like a great place to live in.  Now I understand why my sister-in-law moved there.

Yeah, it's incredible. We stayed in Beaverton, which is a suburb about eight miles away from the city, and I loved the drive to the downtown.  Even in the middle of a metropolitan area, the highway is surrounded by a forest of trees. Driving around, you see green bushes and trees and beautiful roses everywhere. The city is a perfect balance of nature and development.

I got a new camera (Nikon D3200). Tried doing a long exposure during a hazy night. This was the result:

I've just bought the Nikon D3200 too.

It was a toss-up between that and the Canon EOS 600d, so far I'm pretty happy that I made the right choice

Oh cool! I was thinking of the D3100 or a Sony one but I was convinced by others that this is the best beginner DSLR to get.

I figure these days you may as well get a big honking camera because smart phones are just as good as point n shoots.

@Hal, cool stuff.  Long exposures are always fun for sure.

And yes, the D3200 is a fine beginner's camera.  I own a D5100 myself and love it to death.

Very nice.  Good looking stuff from new DSLRs.  My old Olympus D510 still does the job for me.  Example:

    Very nice!

I'm contemplating getting a telephoto lens for my new camera.

    Either this one: http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Product.aspx?language=en-CA&catalog=Online&category=Nikon-DSLR-Cameras&product=8044368

    Or this one: http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Product.aspx?language=en-CA&catalog=Online&category=Nikon-DSLR-Cameras&product=8054368

I already have the camera with the kit lens ($500) so would just pay the difference for the bundled lens.

I'm just wondering if it's better to just get the 200mm zoom or shell out another $80 to get 300mm zoom. I'm just an amateur and photography will never be more than a hobby so not sure but I do want something that is multipurpose and works well.

I would get the extra 100mm.  Even if you're a hobbyist, having the range is never a bad thing.  Of course, 300mm on your camera will actually mean 450mm, so it's up to you if you want that much. 200mm is 300mm on crop cameras such as yours (Nikon labels crop cameras "DX" and full-frame cameras "FX").  Although normally, a 300mm zoom would perform worse - since more glass is required for the longer range, which means added softness and distortion - the optical formula on the 70-300mm VR (I'm assuming that's what you meant?) is actually a little better than the 55-200.  It also works on full frame cameras, which is nice down the road.  You might not want FX now but the price of it has come down a lot since it was introduced.

I agree that the 300 mm zoom lens would give you more range.  If the price differential isn't bad, go ahead.

If you are going to do serious work, you should find a camera club in London, preferably associated with the PSA.  When I did that, I belonged to the Toronto Camera Club, and I learned a lot ... Then I got into sailing and started teaching boating safety and the camera kind of faded away.

Ooooh, I like the look of that

It's a bit weird this, we've both bought the same camera at roughly the same sort of time.

I too got it with the kit lens, and I've been contemplating what telephoto to get, and was thinking of asking people here. So you saved me that task.

I'm doing it as a hobby too, and  I've just joined Southend Photographic Society, where hopefully I can learn lots of hints and tips. And of course, the good people here on Simtropolis are a mine of information  :thumb:

Let us know how you get on with your new lens, I'm looking forward to seeing some nice pics from you soon

New camera gear is always fun.  I try not to just keep buying new stuff all the time and learn to shoot with what I have.  That said, I finally got a standard zoom lens (70-200 f/4) that'll also work on full frame/film cameras.  Feels great so far and I look forward to capturing shots that were not possible before.

Pretty good.  Does it have a setting less than 100 mm?  If not, then not.  However something with a wider angle should be available, especially for portraits.  I liked my old 80 mm. fixed lens for that on my Contaflex (gasp!  a film camera!)

I am dying of Nikon envy.

Depends on your personal style.  Plenty of modern photography portraitists use 85mm and above.  In fact, plenty of them use upwards of 200-300mm, because the facial features become much less distorted and the background blurs quite soft and dreamy.

Here is another image I'd like to share.  I pulled up an old Lightroom Catalog and liked what I saw in the thumbnail (which is how I try to judge my photos now).  Let me know what you think - that means critique, if you have it. :D

Any suggestions or tips for getting a new camera? I'm thinking of getting Nikon 1 :P
