^yea, having what we have now, sc4 is pretty bare bones, especiale before rush hour.

remember in sc3k how when you put two roads next to each other it automaticly makes a median?  l loved that, I made medians all over! 9.gif

I couldn't stand the highways though.

I like the buildings architecture better in sc3k.  I like that east coast american feel.  Especialy some of the civic buildings, the sc3k school is much better than the sc4 school!  I also liked the european and aisan sets, and the multiple terrain and trees too.

I don't think you need to remake it in sc4, although it would be fun to see the alternate version.  If you remake it, remake it very exact so that everyone can look at the differences.  maybe you should do a sc2000 version too! 44.gif  It would be fun to compare them all.

familier anyone? looks like the sc4 sunken highway. this was the area where i tested stuff like this, and this particular design was used in many of my cities, as a replacement for the bulky highways. looks good dosen't it?
if you have any questions, PM me or post here and i'll answer in the morning.

Hey, how'd you do that?47.gif Tunnels will only be built on at least the second tile up on a slope!

There was actualy a way of putting a tunnel virtualy anywhere. You simply had to make a flat tile that had a 64m slope asside and create a strip of raised land at that height for the desired lenght. Then drag the network from the flat tile to the slope and the game would build a tunnel the lenght of your land strip. After what you simply had to level the land.

    Okay, next question...

How the hell do you make a 64m slope!?!?!? 32.gif

Seriously, I can't do it. A slope of more than 52 meters can't be made with the terrain modifying tools since after that raising the terrain just starts dragging up the next ring of tiles out. Is there some kind of mod involved?

EDIT: Nevermind, I got it to work with the 52 meter slope.....

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.
If you can read this, you deserve a cookie.

Looking back I am surprised to see that SC3K was that good. Maybe we've grown ungrateful or something.

Maybe I'll make a SC3K water texture...for old times' sake.

Incidentally, SC3K is only around because of EA. Maxis had designed SC3K in full 3D; it was shown at E3 and everyone hated it. Maxis meanwhile was bleeding cash because it couldn't make money. It desperately needed another hit but didn't have the resources to do it. So EA came along and bought them out. (Perhaps I should rather say that Maxis threw themselves on the mercy of EA.) So EA bought them out and Maxis restarted their SC3K project. And we got what we have now! Which was not too shabby.

Full story is here. I do agree that EA has made mistakes in their handling of Maxis. But without EA, it would be nothing at all. Would that be preferable?

    Nice CJ, btw.

You are right, it is impossible to make a 64m slope.  I (now) remember that sc3k elevation grade was based on 13m steps, wich means that 64m is flatout impossible.21.gif

Did my mistake actually made you go mad!   Well, once again I have prooved that I sometime often fail.20.gif

If I'm not mistaking this time, and if I remember well, I think you can also do it with a 39m slope (harder).

i'm quite aware of that, but it's ashame EA had to ruin everything after yhey seemed to tighten their grip on maxis.

This gets me all nostalgic... SC3K was so much simpler, and it didn't crash nearly as much... 21.gif
And if I hadn't played 3K I never would have bought 4, so I'm glad my dad bought it.

Nice one, TP. And a nice city too. I could never do very well!

And I just remembered... In 3K you could place surface water, but in 4 you can't, which is a shame.

EDIT: I remembered what i was going to post about, lol.
There was far more humour in 3K. There was Han's Silo, and if you queried a certain part of a highway near an onramp, it said something funny... Can't remember what it is though.

beautiful..walk down memory lane for basically all of us. There were so many things that they did right with that game and its nice to think about it in its own right independent of SC4..so i will even avoid the inevitable comparisons.

I REALLY liked the soundtrack for this game and wish i could have it now. I would even listen to it over mp3's because it fit the game so well. And i liked the well drawn animations of your civic advisors. They were cool...

    Thanks.

    hi
    Nice done.

I can only dream to do the same with my city.
Do you use mode or bat or own 3d to get your city like that??

i miss the simplicity, also i think they got the physics bang on, non of this stupid commute time rubbish. the visuals in simcity4 are by far the best improvement but does that make it a better game, i personaly dont think so.

8.gif15.gif I used to remember playing SC3000! I got it for my birthday long ago, when the world was young. It ran so smoothly on my computer and I had good memories playing it. This CJ really brings back a feeling of nostalgia. SC3000, used to be so simple. When I first got SC4, I couldn't understand it at all. I ran out of money so fast. I stopped playing the game for a year, and when I discovered the cheat codes, I started playing again, but soon got bored...since I KNEW there was something missing in the game...i just didn't know what! I stopped playing for another year. FINALLY! I discovered Simtropolis and now, I PLAY SIMCITY AGAIN! 44.gif

Yes, I think you should!  I'm doing it, just because when I bought the game, I had no idea what else to do.  You have a cool looking city, it'd be cool to see it in SC4 graphics as an SC4 region!  And it's like it's almost guarenteed to work, cuz you know exactly how you want it and what to base it on!  Plus, I think it'll look awesome just because of the landscape of your city.  So I would say yeah, go for it!

The same thing happened to me!  I couldn't get a city going for no reason at all (unless you count me not knowing at all how to play a reason...1.gif), and even when I got $400,000 from the cheat codes, it was gone in a rhino year.  Then I get here, and I find out you don't need water when you start, and you don't really need a police department until later, and your Sims won't care.  And now I've got an okay region (based on one of my SC3K cities) that's growing alright and is pretty steady with money with no cheat codes at all. And hey, they're happy, I'm happy, everyone's happy!

I agree with what has been said about the versitility of sc3k compared to sc4. One BIG disappointment has been the BAT. In sc3k almost anyone could design buildings; I had a large library uploaded to the exchange. I'm not exactly computer illiterate but I still have not gotten past 1st base on the BAT.

It would be great if Maxis could combine the best of both games in what ever new version they release.

Great to see some screenshots of an old game! I played this a lot!!!!  For some reason, in Sc3k I was more concentrated on building and building until the whole map was full. In sc4 I'm kind of distracted by so many other features, such as terraforming that my largest sc4 city only reached some 500.000 residents. Great to see someone doing a sc3k cj, keep it up!

there's this little black box in the cellar somewhere... has a maxis logo on it, floppy disks, manual and the dark red password list! (to avoid those new xeroxes that could copy in color!!)

    *happy sigh*

I really enjoyed it. The first editions of SC3000, and SimCity 4 'Vanilla' were indeed basic and uncustomisable. Glad I have SC3000 Unlimited and SimCity 4 Deluxe.

I see you've got a lot of Custom BATS. 2.gif

Ooh, nice CJ. I still have time for SC3000; it seems to offer a different experience to SC4 (fun takes precedence over realism), and of course the Building Architect is much more accessible.

Oh my, this is a good opportunity to promote my SC3K Resource Site :P
