Railway Concrete Tunnel

Okay, so I've been working on this for a few months and I got some positive feedback on the Chat so I decided to ask the community what do YOU think of it?

Ok guys, your feedback is my guide. Tell me, what do you think? *;)

If I may, FlyHigh (maxwell)

Unless the tunnel is designed to be an overlay, and hence plopped over an existing rail tunnel I would suggest the following design criteria:

1. It should be capable of fitting into the space that a standard rail tunnel takes up - ie 7.25m tall at the back wall on a 16x16 tile. Any different in size and the slope exemplar needs modification. It can but shouldn't extend over that tile.

2. By definition that is one double rail link - up and back. The pathing is designed for that.

3. The game does not draw anything in space around the tunnel so you need to cover any gaps with concrete or the like

4. To replace the game tunnel the model needs to have a specific id - any normally BATted lot number will not work.

5. The internal clearance for a train is important (although the game wont break) - the top of the inner tunnel should be no less than 6m, and the width of the portal should allow for about 4m per track, ie 2m in each direction off track centrelines

I like the texture and industrial shape of your tunnel (looks a bit like the game Avenue tunnel) , and would like to see it in 'standard' config ie rail dragged through a hill, or even dragged two side by side - this cant be done with the standard rail tunnel. Even better to see a train running through it.

cheers rivit

I like the style. Clean and simple.

The texture could be a bit darker and a bit more grainy/rustic. More like its aged a bit rather than brandy spanking new.

And of course ... what rivit said.

Looks awesome!

I've one request; Might it be possible to produce an STR (Single Track Rail) version of the tunnel as well?

Keep up the great work :-)

Agree with Jay, I do: the texture looks like its simply a grey colour and has no depths. And yes, these days STR variants are a must..

Thank you all for the replies!

So, let me start by giving a bit of context which I feel may be necessary. This rail tunnel is the first lot of many and it is supposed to be integrated into a Modular Complex Railway that I'm in the process of developing that will (in due time) increase the versatility of the game's Rail System.

I have wondered of many different ways to make it as real life as possible and, given the limitations with rail tunnels (you know, no way to curve) I've opted to use the subway tunnel for underground construction, sacrificing consistency and the Region Transport View accuracy.

What does this translate into technically? This lot is, in effect a TELot (with custom paths, seeing it's 4track) that will convert rail traffic into subway traffic and vice-versa. For the time being it is just an overhanging prop but I will consider changing this method in the future since I'm pretty sure there will be problems with the automata. It will and it is not intended to replace the game's original tunnel but rather to be part of a more versatile system that will complement the original.

For the time being I have no intention of either replace the original or making a single track version as this is quite a big project. I may do it later though once the basis is laid.

About the model itself. This model has been done according to the European minimum requirements for clearance and safety, and the materials and construction methods have been extensively tested. I can assure you this construction will not put in danger either the passengers or the trains that may run through it and will provide for a fast, efficient and safe way to both travel and transport of goods. ;)

The texturing is indeed the feedback I was most anxious for since my texturing skills are still somewhat limited. I will be trying some new textures and techniques (yup, making it look a bit older)!

Anyway I will report any further development on the on. In the meantime keep 'em coming!

    UPDATE June 26

Thank you guys here and in the Chat for the feedback on this model. Here's the new update on it.

The model is the exact same. Main textures changed only.

    Texture is certainly improved.

I suggest also checking how the tunnel looks when used with minimum elevation change.

Try it in game with only 8 meters change and see if it "fits" into the hillside properly.
