This is my submission for January. Finally some snow over here, so I managed to take a few scenic pictures!

The story:

While visiting a local park, I saw this wall. Seeing as it was covered in snow, I thought it was quite a nice scene, so I quickly took the shot. Anyway, when reviewing the pictures back home, I had plenty of snow-covered trees, frozen lakes, and even snowmen. These would be fairly easy to make into banners, but I wanted to make the text stand out against a solid background — quite hard to achieve for scenes with a lack of colour. Then I found my 'wall picture' and thought it could be useful.

After a bit of editing and trial and error, here is the end result:

Since I had to remove the existing sign name (using the smudge tool), it was quite a challenge to recolour the background. I have tried to add a weathering effect to the sign, to try and replicate the one from the picture. Although some of this effect has been lost by exporting it to a lower resolution.

As always, they were a pleasure to make.

What program are you using? With Photoshop CS5 or CS6 you can very easily remove parts of a picture with the function "content aware" fill.

Also, photoshop has the Clone Stamp tool with which you can easily fill parts from other areas of the existing imagery. Check it out ;-)

I've tried to make the text stand out, while still complementing the overall theme.

Thanks for the suggestions.

To make these, I'm currently using a combination of Serif PhotoPlus, and Paint.NET (for minor touch ups).

Here's my March submission. Currently, it's still quite cold here at the moment -- got another load of snow last week.

I've decided to go with the daffodil theme (a key symbol for the month). Since March isn't that famous for snow, I've used a picture from a previous year.

I decided I'd try this out. My smaller versions didn't turn out as well, so I didn't bother uploading them. I'll probably work on them later.

For the second banner, I combined a cherry blossom, since I've heard that they bloom in April, and rain, because of the whole "April showers bring May flowers" sort of thing.

I like how you have the highway sign, but to make it more realistic you should use the FHWA "Highway Gothic" font. Just google "Roadgeek 2005 fonts," which is a series of highway signage fonts that include the FHWA series fonts. It's a free download, btw.
