I don't know if this is a realistic idea or not, but the little rooftop section would look fairly cute if it was like a resturant? just a weird idea, take it or leave it, because no matter what this building is going to be amazing.

I was going to add some tables and my ussual potted bushes to the lower roof. Depending on how the top roof goes, I might put a wall around the mechanical stuff and I could put some bushes there too, but I'll see when I get there. It's common for theaters to have bars.

I was also thinking, that since the marquees will be props, it could be possible to have a prop family with marquees with different attractions written. It depends on if the writing is visible, and how big the LODs for the marquees end up being.

Speaking of the marquee, what should it look like? All I know is it's not going to be a crome modern art deco one. I was thinking of the same kind of big overhang as the Maxis Theater, but I want the horizontal part to make a triangle shape. I don't know what to name this either. So any help with either of those would be cool.

Jason - this looks really good. I really love the shape and mixed stone/brickwork on this theatre! As for the marquee's - born78's tipolis/titanic hotels had these (as I'm using them for a project at the moment). They may be what you're looking for, maybe not....

    Nice new additions, Jason!

Selfishly, I wasn't happy when I heard you were doing a HK BAT because I want you to spend all your available SC4 energy on something significant from Detroit- haha. I think the Guardian by you would be awesome and would be unlike anything else here on the STEX. I'd like to have a skyscraper of that design/color for the centerpiece of my midtown I'm making.... something big made of brick. What do you think of the Stott Bldg? That one might actually be somewhat easier to recreate and, I believe, is just as impressive as the Guardian. I was driving up Gratiot towards downtown this morning and the Stott looked particularly handsome for some reason. Or maybe the old Hudson's? Too bad you weren't born as triplets so you could do all of them!

I'm thinking about doing a sorta loose version of Detroit for my next Sim City project. Since you obviously know the city well, do you have any idea or what would be your guess as to the size of Campus Martius in-game?

Oh yeah..... I'd love to see your Vinton completed too! Again, keep up the good work

This is part of downtown gridded out.  Right about at campus martius the wheel road design kicks in, and it get's really messy.  I've mapped out north of the screenshot, but it's distorted it's not worth showing, and prooves that an accurate Detroit isn't possible.  Woodward is straight though, so it's possible to do, and anything past grand circus park goes back to the grid pattern.

My Fisk Insurance is the Vinton Building, the tennis courts are the guardian building (maybe it's actually a 2x5), and next it is the rest of the block which will soon be demolished for a parking garage for the Guardian Building.  The skateboarding parks are 1 Woodward, the large garden is the Penobscot Building.  The Large plaza with small plazas around is Comerica.  the buerro of bueocracy (huge sp) should fill the entire block, but they generally look the same.  Next to it is the Free Press, and behind that is simgoobers library, which looks a lot like the real small building that's behind it.

To figure all this out, I use google maps, which has a scale.  I measure the lots, and divide by 16 (one tile is 16x16 meters).

The Stott is 2x1.5, I think, so it doesn't fit the tiles.  Plus, it's at Capitol Park, which has diagonals on the other side, while everything surrounding the guardian building can be recreated, and line up nicely.

Off the top of my head, buildings that have been started are:  Hudsons, Comerica Tower, Ford Field, Dime, Cadillac, Kales, and 150 West Jefferson.  The BSP thread has 50+ pages of stuff about it.  Right now though, the only active members are me and JBSimio, and T Wrecks is if you want to count him (he's produced more results than alot of the team, lol).

If you decide to upload something, ask for some feedback before you do (you can post it in the Barry Sanders Project thread) incase something can be improved, and so that a custom querry can be arranged for it.  If you need any help with anything, just ask.  Also, add "BSP" to the front of the name when you upload it to the stex, so that someone searching for Detroit things can search BSP and get all of the projects uploads.

I came home from college for the summer, and then I went on a campout, and now I need to rearrange this one room in my house before I can set up my computer, so work on BATs won't be happening for a little while.

I hate moving... thankfully I don't do it nearly as often as I used to.  There was a five year stage where I had a total of seven different addresses (in three states!)  Man, that sucked... good luck getting resettled!

yikes!  luckily, for me it's just stuff from my dorm which isn't too bad, and I never put my address anywhere so my mail won't need to be fowarded.

I think I'll be starting in that room later today.  But since all good things have operation names, I'll need to think of one before commencing.  It might be Operation: rar (re-arrange the room).  The name strikes a primal fear in all who hear it.  RAR!!!! 40.gif

    The name is tenative.

What, you rearrange your room? I'm 20 and I STILL can't be bothered doing that (mainly because I couldn't care less how it's arranged.

Every few months my mum decides she wants to rearrange my room. I just let her do it. She doesn't seem to want no for an answer. 3.gif

Well, I guess re-arrange was the wrong word, since it's been rearranged a few times before, but it's more like I need to pack up all of my old stuff.  Some things have been slowley getting packed away over the years, but there is still alot of stuff left behind.  Other than my guitar stuff, a shelf with my DVDs on it, and my video game stuff, it has the same kind of stuff in it that it did 10 years ago.  I also need to rearrange it though, because my computer is being set up in there, and right now there isn't any space for it.  It's also the toy room, which used to be where all of the kids toys were and stuff.  My room has the same stuff in it that it did 15 years ago, lol.

I think I might have mentioned my BAT School idea here before, and I just made a thread for it.  A link is in my signature, and I submitted it for the homepage news too.  If anyone has a CJ, or their own BAT showcase, and they want to help spread the word, it would be helpful.

I've been working on the theater.  The marquee is mostly done, except I need a name for the theater.  I made the marquee with "Wagner" but I can only name so many things wagner.

So I need suggestions.  6 letters would be best, but 5 would work too.

The "Bijou" was a common name for theatres in early 20th century America. So was the "Palace". Just throwing those out there, since they seem to fit with your style theme.

I can't wait to see an update of that theater!  I'm a pretty big fan of this one.

Names?  Hmmm.... there's always "State"... seems like those are everywhere, but probably too common of a name.  We had the Court Theater in Saginaw (it was on Court Street)... I'm not coming up with much.  Most of my names come from the last name of some prominent person, whether it's from a city, work, or even some former well loved teacher in high school.

The Manor perhaps? The old one here was called The Empire, but it's demolished now...that's about all I can think of. Good luck finding a name!

cool!  I asked for suggestions and I got them! lol

I thought about the State Theater, but those generally have the same style marquee, and that style wasn't the kind of marquee I wanted to make.  I took a screenshot of my progress so far, and I put it on a flash drive (I think that's what they're called, those little storage sticks that plug into a usb port), but this laptop can't use it.  My computer and my family computer switch between one moniter, but there's also a laptop that I'm using right now, but it's in the middle of the room that's being gone through, so it's really uncomfortable using it.  I'm hoping to have my normal computer set up soon. 14.gif

Anyway, I'll try out a few of these names on the theater to see if they look good on it.

It turns out my computer was looked at yesterday, so I can use the internet on it.  The marquee on the bottom still needs the light bulbs, and a texture for the white part, and I need to change the name.  The top part is still extruded text, but the bottom text was manually changed to fit the curve, so I need to redo that part to test the names.

Looks awesome. your work is among my favorites on simtrop. if you're still into theater names, i have a couple more:

[City Landmark here] Playhouse (in boston it's Charles River Playhouse)

    The Orpheum

    The Avalon

[city name here] Performing Arts Center (In your case, you might like Detroit Center for the Performing Arts, although that's lengthy for what you're doing)

    The Avon

    The Cable Car

    Kitner

    Altra

    Babylon

    Ricker

    Harding

It really looks like a civic "Empire," but perhaps you can also try "Alameda," or perhaps even a "Sullivan Theater." Maybe even showtimes for Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado on the lower marquee. Alameda sounds very Beaux-Artsy, which matches the style of the building, though I may be biased as there is a streamlined Art Deco Alameda Theater in my city. Wagner is still cool too, though I keep imagining Lohengrin and the Nibelungenlied playing inside....hmmm, the Bayreuth Playhouse?

At any rate, yours is looking like an astounding marquee.

I still haven't tried any of the names out, but so far Empire, Palace, and Regal are sticking out to me.  I think the yellow, blue, red, and that rich white stone and the halfway fancy marquee would make it fit with those kinds of names.  Maybe I'll try Royal too.

Yesterday I sent the redone small train station to T Wrecks, which was the last redone train station I had to send to him.  The train station set will have the large (2x4), the medium (1x4), and small (1x2) stations, all with new textures and LODs.  So expect that to hit the stex in a few weeks. 1.gif

    Orpheum

    Hippodrome

    Republic

    Liberty

    [City Name] Publix

    Paramount

    Music Box

    Guild

    National

Just some I have heard of from various sources...
