At first when I saw your post I was shocked, because while the late 70s wasn't exactly recent, it wasn't THAT long ago. The architecture is not as ancient as the sci fi and there's a contrast there. But reading more about it it looks like it was meant to be retro and campy. To think that there were things like Star Wars or Alien around the same time. But it's still interesting because while Bladerunner would come out a few years later, the city backdrop would not be that dissimilar if you blocked out the sun and added some refineries. It's also interesting to see the high tech and brutalist influences, rather than the cleaner and more utopian modernism of the previous decade.

Turns out I had done everything wrong, so I had to restart and look really closely at what was happening. This time I think I've got it right.

The preview render above isn't scaled up (right now all of the windows are individual instanced windows, to make it easier to edit them if need be, but having so many objects lags the scene too much to scale it). The elevator towers are from the old wrong version, but I've included them to approximate what should be there.

So I suppose I should update my thread more often.

This one is mostly done. The main thing to do is find 3d models of cars appropriate for this kind of apartment building in Brazil. And then whatever final tweaking. I'm not sure if they look too run down.

Otherwise there's some roof junk, texturing the ground and the walls, and then I think some minor signage and other small details.

 

My current thinking for the near future is to upload this, the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, a pack of three cream colored brick apartment buildings, a pack of art deco department stores, and a pack of a few small commercial buildings from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Tomorrow I'll try to get some current preview renders of everything together.

So here's the cream brick apartment building pack. I haven't posted Wellington Place, which is a 2x3 (in real life it's 2x2.5, so I've extended the parking garage in the back). The main building is mostly done but the parking garage still has a ways to go. The 1x1 is Hathaway Tower, which I've posted before. I haven't worked on it since then. And then I'll probably find another cream colored brick apartment building to complete the pack.

I believe those buildings are usually from poor and maybe some lower middle class people - in Brazilian classification. For that kind of apartments you will always find what we call popular cars (the cheapest ones): GM Celta, GM Corsa, GM Onix, Fiat Mile, Fiat Siena, Fiat Uno, Fiat Palio, Fiat Strada, Fiat Punto, Ford Ka, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai HB20, Volkswagen Gol, Volkswagen Polo, Volkswagen Fox, Volkswagen Voyage. You will definitely find motorcycles as well, in fact in some regions they are more common than cars.

Oh I understand. If you and Jason work on this one I'd suggest to just add some hatchback cars there then, they're by far the most common in this case. Or maybe he can just add the front of some of the cars (I believe he will place them in the first floor of the buildings so we won't see them entirely).

I've made an update on Great Lakes EMS Academy. As usual, I post about mipro BATs in the mipro thread and not here, but since I'm reviewing my WIPs in this thread I'll also post it here this time, for completeness. But follow the mipro thread if you're interested in mipro BATs.

 

The day is done unless anyone notices something that needs improving. The back door on the corner is actually supposed to be a window, so I need to make that higher. Here's the street view, although there's not up to date images for the back. https://goo.gl/maps/UtJb2gGVaAtpYT4K7

Also, the sidewalk will not be included in the final export, but it gives an idea of the outline of the 1x2 lot. It'll be a CS$$ lot.

I feel like this little building is not substantial enough to upload by itself, so I'd like to make a few more similar buildings from Grand Rapids, to make a small pack out of it.

Hey guys, I've made a poll asking about uploading BATs in packs. Click the link above to go to the poll!!

A few of the BATs I will be finishing up in the next week or so, and will be ready to upload them. I could either upload them when they're done, or wait until I have a complete pack worth of BATs to upload together, which at the rate I'm going might be a while.

The advantage to uploading them individually is that there's less of a wait, and it's easier on me. The advantage to packs is that for smaller items it's easier to browse and install packs than a bunch of small individual downloads.

 

Here's some progress on the Brazilian apartments, which are almost done. I still need to put in some trees, some patio furniture, and some roof junk. Otherwise that's it, unless someone notices something else. For some reason the scene has become mega laggy, so it's been hard working on it but it's very close to being done.

But I also have a few questions:

First, those tall openings on the roof. Are those walls to hide mechanical equipment? Or are they courtyards which cut through the building down to the ground floor (to encourage ventilation)?

Second, does the parking area under the buildings have lights at night?

Voted - You've a;ways uploaded as and when, this much like how Matt does means that there is a steady flow of BATs keeping everyone interested in BATing. We've all seen the affects off holding off uploading something for it to never be seen...Totally up to you though mate!

I dislike packs as a general idea. I like being able to download things separately.

 

If you do ever decide to make packs, please please do not dat pack everything.... Makes the job of sorting things out much harder!
