Official announcement

Today Focus Home Interactive revealed the first images of Cities XL 2012, the newest version of the popular PC city-building simulation, which allows you to build, develop and then connect huge cities.

Cities XL 2012 allows players to become real urban planners, balancing economic & energy developments of their cities while managing transportation, housing, social services and recreational activities. Content is key to the new game, as Cities XL 2012 offers a staggering number of unique structures with over 1,000 in total.

The 60 huge 3D maps are entirely constructible and sport incredible detail. Cities XL 2012 offers more variety than any other city building-game. At the request of its fast-growing community, Cities XL 2012 is now open to modding and even features a special guide within the game to get players started. With these new tools, dedicated players can build and share their creations to their hearts’ content!

We invite you to discover the very first images of Cities XL 2012 that show off some of the new environments and construction features. A lost oasis in the middle of the harsh desert, the Cayman Islands, Lake Powell and many others are some of the stunning new playgrounds where you’ll build increasingly gigantic cities. Your cities are now visually richer than ever, with typical buildings from mountain townships or seaside resorts, but also a much bigger variety among all the building types of the game!

Cities XL 2012 will be available in October 2011 as a standalone game. It will be fully compatible with the 2011 version, so Cities XL 2011 owners can upgrade their game by downloading a special version at a discount price.

More than 1000 different structure and buildings

· 60 huge, constructible 3D maps

· Find the right balance between economic & energy developments, manage transportation networks, housing, social services and recreational activities

· Connect your cities in an immense trading network

· Create and share new content thanks to new modding tools

Upgrade details

The release date for Cities XL 2012 approaches and you can now discover more about the different versions of the game. The 2012 update will be released in two forms: the full setgame, and the official expansion for current Cities XL 2011 players.

The full game Cities XL 2012 will offer the entire contents of Cities XL 2011 all the additions found in Cities XL 2012. In total, players will have over 1,000 buildings and 60 different and highly detailed maps for construction that will be included in this new version of the famous PC city-builder on PC. We’re also proud to announce that the game is now open to modding – we’re including powerful modding tools and a special guide to get players started. Cities XL 2012 will be available for 39.99€.

The official Cities XL 2012 expansion will contain more than 280 new buildings, 15 additional cards for construction plus modding access, and requires that Cities XL 2011 be previously installed on the computer. This expansion disk for current players will be officially priced at 14.99€.

This is really exciting news! 9.gif

That looks amazing! I will think about getting it when it comes out and wait for the reviews. Will i still be able to get a discount on it because i purchased Cities XL 2011 on steam. I'll just have to wait and see.

If the "modding tools" are easy enough, i am sure we will soon see tons of really unique buildings!

Love to see what the modding entails. I dunno, better road textures? new buildings? The mind boggles to think. The announcement didn't mention bug fixes, though...

Well of course. It isn't common to mention bug fixes in a press release like that IMO. Though I'd be greatly surprised if they don't fix a lot of the bugs in CXL2011. Don't worry :)

1. The new content is that all GEMs have been completed and fixed?

2. I think modding tools will breathe more life into this game.

3. So they are bringing the total maps up to all that were in PO+2011+locked?

4. A huge amount of buildings (or variety in any game) is not as apparent in screenshots of single styles.

5. My obsession switched to Minecraft so I hope that CXL 2012 is released in 2012 because that is when I am buying it, If I ever do.

6. The pictures look really familiar, even the "first" time I saw them. Was something similar to this advertised in 2009? Were screenshots that resembled these taken with the Unlocker Mod?

Also what about bright night lights. Will that problem be solved in this edition? I hope it does! Also they should provide new bridge models and elevated metro stations. :ohyes:

Yawn. Yet another minor, minor update branded as the "next version".

Wake me up when someone creates something new from scratch.

We don't really know much about it yet.. Let them have the benefit of the doubt before we slaughter the game! But yes, I do expect nothing more then something along the lines of the poor CXL 2011 (content wise)

Why not release the modding tools separately (for free)?

The trailer was reported to only be meant for publishers and such to show the engine, not as an official trailer. That's because it is EXACTLY like the 2011 trailer, just renamed 2012 trailer.

Focus said actual news is coming within the weeks.

I should have posted this much earlier.

I'm not too interested this time around. CitiesXL 2011 added some of the more necessary changes, but very little was offered besides the those things regarding trade, multiple cities of the same map, and metro. These games take a long time to play through depending upon your style and time is not always so free. Unless this edition offers a considerable amount of complete additions (metro is really only a subway), I feel that I might as well wait till CitiesXL 2015. Creating games takes time and effort; a year usually isn't enough time to create a lot of changes especially if it is a complex project. I'd rather see these new features added into the game in the form of DLC packs or expansions as it is pretty much the same game with possibly a slightly modified engine.

However, CitiesXL is still a decent game, maybe not the most fun to play, but still decent. Hopefully, the developers intended this new edition to include more interactive content that makes your cities feel more alive through better feedback from its citizens and leaders. Like always, I shall defiantly look into what the game has to offer after release. I'm currently that the ski resort addon gives this new feedback to the player and that other things similar to it are added to other parts of the game.

Overall, my view on the game remains positive as much of the content indicated from Monte Cristo is finally making itself into the game.

Well I’m glad that there bringing out a “new” game again, but from the pics I have seen it looks the same as before, I’ve already spent $100AUD on CXL already, even though I still do play it from time to time, but I will find it hard to spend anther $50 on it for the same game. I'm going to see how this one pans out,

I’m hopping for

a easy to use map editor

a building/lot editor. (that allowed me to make lots at different sizes and shapes)

proper rail.

Any thing less than that and I’m not going to buy it, and I suspect nether will a lot of other people

True, these are fair expectations for a 'new' game, but I'm afraid they (Focus) don't think of it in such terms. It's more of an 'expansion' than a 'new' game. As such it will (probably) have discount for people that already have CXL 2011, so you'll have to spend less than $50....

There is still not enough info on what exactly the game will include (features, price), and the supposed launch date is coming. On the CXL forums there is something close to a hysteria in relation to this....

The only thing I want is for them to fix the dreaded Memory Leaks.

I'm in 100% agreement here. With the (supposed) full modding capabilities, I am confident that anything this game lacks in it's 2012 release may eventually come to be... but none of that really matters if your game still performs like a bloated pig when you build a big city.

Looks pretty cool, although it seems to breech the borders of "Uncanny Valley", in terms of the appearance of the city and buildings. It isn't quite photorealistic, but it isn't quite cartoony (much like our beloved SC4). This is definitely a good step forward though, and it is unfortunate that I won't be able to play this game any time soon.

SC4, Forevermore!

Currently preoccupied with architecture school...lurking with caution.
