First off, I'd just like to say that you guys are awesome for making this. Ever since Sim City 2000, I've wanted to have some highways like this.

Anyway, as for the whole issue regarding the interchanges... You need a relatively long ramp/whatever for entering and exiting, but the game mechanics typically demand a more conservative use of space; if that's the case, why don't you just make the highway's merging lanes longer? From what I've seen in this thread (not to mention elsewhere on Simtropolis), that shouldn't be too hard to pull off, or so I imagine. It's possibly a reasonable solution in the "realistic" sense, because you still have sufficient space with which to speed up or slow down; and it's practical in terms of game mechanics, as you don't have to deal with ramps stretching outwards for three tiles on either side. Heck, perhaps it'd even be possible to have an on-ramp and exit-ramp share the same merging lane (although, at that point, we're likely getting into wishful thinking).

And sure, long merging lanes may not be anything like what's been mentioned in this thread (although I didn't read much of the latter half, admittedly), but isn't that how compromises work, anyway? I mean, if you can't please everyone (by giving them what they want), then please no one (by giving them what they need).

Of course, as no one here has likely ever heard of me before, and you just read the contents of my entire post count (as of my posting this, anyway), it is quite apparent that I am quite the greenhorn in the subject of Sim City 4 modding; as such, it's entirely concievable that I just spewed out little more than a bunch of nonsense.

At any rate, I wish you much luck with your endeavors with these highways, as well as any project you may undertake in the future.

I have a quick question: does this mod alter the slope to the ANT network? If it does can it be undone? Thanks again!

The RHW uses a network type ("dirt road") that Maxis never finished. The transportation map code doesn't know how to display the dirt road/RHW network. The EXE would require changes in order to fix this.

Hi!

I need that Two Lane Highway thing you guys have been working on. It was included in an archive togather with the RHW ver. 0.12, but any link I found on it was outdated.

This is the main type of intersection they use where I live in upstate New York. Here is the interchange:

or the highway goes over the road like this:

This is really cool stuff. I have a couple questions and a couple suggestions.

First, I don't think ANT is strictly one-way, is it? I mean, if you have a stretch of RHW and there are two ajacent non-grade-seperated intersections with two way roads, would it be possible for vehicles to turn the wrong way down the RHW and backtrack to the next road?

The other thing is something I'd like to see. I've noticed in NAM that they have custom cloverleaf interchanges for elevated highways. IE: Cloverleafs with ramps in only 3 quadrants, 2 quadrants (ajacent and opposite) and 1 quadrant. These would be useful if they could be incorporated into the RHW project for when a RHW intersects another RHW or a regular highway.

Unless the advice would be to just have the RHW merge into a regular highway for the interchange. Another good idea might be the single sided paralell ramps that a lot of people use for sunken highways to join with paralell one-way roads. This would make it possible to do a sunken RHW with something (like a railway) running between them. The existing road-over-rail (or GLR) and road-over-RHW puzzle pieces would make overpasses easy, since we can't do overpasses with two halves of a regular highway (if it was set up like a multi-highway for example, with a 1 tile gap between the roadbeds).

You know what woud be perfect for the RHWs?

Duke87, I thought that it would be interesting to make a “Plain RHW” bridge.   I defined a test bridge to be two tiles wide, but when I tried to build it, I was surprised to find that the resulting bridge was only 1 tile wide.

I can not think of any way to fix this.  Two one tile wide bridges would need to be spaced at least one tile apart.

As the two sides of a RHW are technically two different roads, I don't think they can be on the same bridge. Either they'd have to be seperate bridges, or you could consolidate the two sides into a regular highway for the bridge section.

bg7873: Please take an extra look through the page before asking. A quick look on the last two pages, I see 4 links to the server or the file itself. Your post and the answer just filles up the thread.

How is the progress coming along ?

Anung Mwka: no. The ANT was actually a stub project for dirt roads. It never got finished, but the NAM brought it back to SC4 as a custom road mod. Since it is a stub, it does not appear.

However, a new transport view mod from Constantina shows the GLR network, if any. The GLR, however, is pure custom modding.

Well, since the RHWs are usualy spaced one tile apart anyway, that would be just fine.

Is there a way that we could have puzzle pieces? All that I personally need is on slope and over roads, streets, and rail. Because one of the ways I am using this is as a parkway, where it is more realistic to have underpasses than overpasses. I'll see if I can get some pictures of what I'm doing.

So, here's a suggestion. I read through most of this ah...um...thread! SORRY its really late here and I cant think, but how about an Urban interchange? there is one at Cheyenne Ave/I-15 in Las Vegas, as well as one at University Parkway @ I-15 in Orem, Utah for examples. Sorry cant get any pictures now, but it would be really great if it could be added in somehow. Love the work so far, using it in all my bigger cities. Any dates for the next NAM/RHW release? Keep up the good work!

What is the progress on the textures?  I do all of my interchanges with oneway roads, but it doesnt always match up.  Also, I would like to see tunnels and overpass pieces.  If you need help, let me know.  I'm trying to learn how to do modding.

I feel like the potential of the RHW tool is being seriously inhibited by something obvious: even though you can lay each side of the highway individually, you can't line up two stretches of RHW side by side to make a larger highway! (i.e. an 8-lane highway composed of four dragged strips of RHW).

Well I mean technically you can...but the way the textures are currently designed it doesn't look anything like one large highway if you do. What you end up with is four lanes of highway on each side that are obviously made of two separate two-lane roads (due to the road's shoulders and painted lines).

I'd like to see some variations of the current RHW with different painted lines and shoulder placements so that we can lay two strips of one-way RHW side-by-side and have them appear to be one road.

After all, nearly every highway serving large urban populations spawns 8, 10, and even 12 lanes. The RHW, due to its huge placement flexibility, could make constructing these superhighways possible. All we need to do is change the look of the road so they can be convincingly laid side-by-side in one-direction. If I had the slightest idea how to change the textures, because in my mind it's as simple as changing them in MS Paint, I would have.

Does anyone else agree this is severely needed and would make RHW infinitely more awesome? Does anyone want to start doing this? heh

Thanks.

Do we need anything with that much capacity? It might look cool, but I've never been able to fill up a highway in the game. Maybe someday we can do that, but we should finish what we have started first

Are you serious? Almost all of my highway networks are filled to capacity or over capacity. Many sections that are extremely over capacity would greatly benefit.
