Americans should be embarrassed about being fat. I live in Japan and it is always embarrassing to have to face the reality that my countrymen are large, lard-filled beach balls. The other thing is that it is shocking to go from slim Japan to jumbo-sized America. It didn't used to be like this...

I am not sure if some of those sensationalist claims are honest opinions or facetiousness because Michelle Obama has her own little crusade against obesity.

My comment was facetious.

Duke, I can tell when you are being sarcastic. I was referring to this post:

If it does not happen, we are looking at a very grim 4 more years, by then though everyone will be on government support and no one will bother to work anymore and nothing will ever get done and we will all be fat anyway.

Which is sensationalist and somethings are the opposite of the truth. What he should have said (if he was exaggerating the truth) is, "Everyone will be unemployed and on government support, nothing will ever get done, and fat people will be punished (or sugar and fat will be outlawed)."

Japan's diet is quite healthy, since the majority of food are fish (which is very healthy for you) as well as vegetables, with carbohydrates coming from rice (very good alternative to sugar). That's why they also have one of the longest life expectancy in the world.

Australia's getting to be one of the most overweight countries in the world. We still have a pretty high life expectancy though, 6th out of the UN member states.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. Japan's dietary habits depend on them being an island nation. The US has a lot less coastline per capita and thus our cuisine is nowhere near as heavy on seafood.

Meanwhile, I think sushi (and fish in general, for that matter) is disgusting, so no thanks.

I never cared for seafood until I had grilled fish at fancy restaurants. On sushi, I prefer crab, vegetarian, and cooked sushis. I also like properly prepared prawns. So crustaceans (crabs, shrimp, prawns, lobsters), salmon, and rarely other types of fish that have been prepared gourmet and delicious. Though I must say that scallops are second worst only to canned tuna.

Just to add to my first comment: I think a lot of it has to do with how they eat their food too. Chopsticks do make it difficult just to shovel it into your mouth compared to using forks. Plus, the food tends to be quite filling too, so you don't need as much. Is that right?

I think that they have smaller portions and are less likely to eat as much as we do back Stateside because it is NOT a land of plenty. The US has a huge expanse of fertile farmland extending thousands of square miles between the Rockies and the Appalachians. Japan has the Kanto plain, about a quarter of the size of Ohio. Looking at some Japanese food, there is a distinct feeling that some of it comes not from taste or want, but from desperation and need. During a famine on a series of volcanic, earthquake-stricken rocks, there really isn't any choice but to eat rotten beans (natto) or glorified sticks (gobou) or weeds (hijiki).

My experience (and now I have kind of a lot of it) is that the food is not especially filling. Occasionally tasty, but served in small portions. Also, sushi (and the riceless sashimi) is expensive and usually only served on special occasions. That was a misconception I had about the diet here. They do not eat raw fish with every meal, and they have a variety of usually quite delicious ways to cook it.

The food here is quite unlike the food I've seen offered on menus back home in "Japanese" restaurants. Hey, you gotta cater to the locals, right?

Gombou looks unappetizing but nutritious, I never ate natto but I have no clue where to order it good, and I like seaweeds.

Gobou I've gotten used to, hijiki as well. Natto, I've heard, is an acquired taste. But upon tasting it, I have determined that I will never EVER acquire it. Oh my god, if there is a more disgusting food on the planet, I have not come across it.

Just so you know what I'm talking about: Natto is slimy texture, taste like a cross between foot goo and dirty dishwater, looks like snot, smells like old gym shoes. It is Awful.

Thanks for the smile, Duke, hehe, "natto your thing," classic. :D

In Japanese, slimy textures are pronounced "neba-neba", and it always makes me think about how I will never-never eat neba-neba foods.

Also, for you CWLGAMER01, natto is fermented soy beans. Fermented is a fancy way of saying rotten.
