I don't care about college sports and I don't gamble, so this whole bracket thing is not something I take part in.

Really? I thought your username was because you were a Blue Devils fan.

Yeah, that's a common misconception, it seems. One I did not foresee when I first created the name for the purpose of logging into AOL (yeah, that long ago). I was in 4th Grade. I'd never heard of Duke University.

The real story is that it is in reference to Duke Nukem, the character and his eponymous video game series... which I was crazy obsessed with at the time. I even had people at school calling me "Duke" as a nickname.

Growing up in southwestern Connecticut, the only questions are about which New York (professional) sports teams to root for. College sports aren't too popular.

It's actually interesting. You can basically draw a line up the middle of Connecticut where to the south and west everyone roots for New York teams while to the north and east everyone roots for Boston teams. It roughly follows the Connecticut river in the southern half of the state and then it veers off in a northwesterly direction (Hartford is Boston territory).

Meanwhile, no one cares about UConn unless they are a student or an alum.

I've never quite grasped why college sports are so popular in the US. Professional sports I can understand, but not college games.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Compared to how it is in Japan, I think that Americans have FAR more love for their colleges/universities than the Japanese do here. Part of why Japanese people don't really talk about it is because for the most part, they drink their way through college and there aren't many sports or activities to speak of, and another part is modesty: people who went to a MARCH school (JP Ivy League) have trouble admitting it because the culture really values modesty: braggarts are annoying and disrespected, whereas in the US, a lot of us feel that our college years are a big part of our personality and a lot of us carry an inordinate amount of love for our schools (my username here is evidence of that). Colleges in the US also use the sports as a way to lure advertising dollars and TV air time to attract new students. There are people out there who pick colleges based upon how well they did last season. Keep in mind: if it looks stupid but it works, then it's not stupid (on the part of the universities).

But as with anything, it depends. Some schools (e.g., Penn State) revolve around their sports. Others, like the one I went to, are generally apathetic about their sports unless you happen to be on the team. Pick any soccer or lacrosse game at Manhattan College, you can walk by the "stadium" and there will be a couple dozen people in the stands. Basketball attracts a bit more since the basketball team unlike all the other teams doesn't utterly suck, but still, it's not a huge deal. And, we don't have a football team thanks to Title IX - can't get enough girls interested.

Of course, we're talking about a school that has only about 3,000 students, so things are naturally very different from a large university. I was never in a huge lecture hall with hundreds of students for a class. The largest class I had was about 60 students and even that was an exception. Pretty much every class capped out at 25 students or so.

"Was?" Have you lost the fire Duke?

It has always been a curiosity to me how college sports always seem to outdo their professional counterparts, if not in talent, then in passion. I think this makes high tempo games--such as basketball and hockey--far more exciting. Even two lower-ranked college basketball teams playing each other holds my interest better than 85% of NBA games, even though I consider myself an avid fan of the Sacramento Kings (NBA). On that same note, NBA Playoffs are rivaled by none in my humble opinion. Football (American), on the other hand, I think is far better in the NFL than the NCAA. Something about the precision and the sheer speed and force with which the players compete is just amazing, at least to me.

My college had an average Div I hockey team, and it was fun to go to the games. I think the NHL is more exciting, though, but I'll take college hockey over the minor league variety.

As far as football goes, both college and NFL are interesting to me, although I am unable to be nearly as strong a fan as I would be were I back Stateside.

I think the NBA has suffered an image problem thanks to the Allen Iversons and Dennis Rodmans of the world. I don't know anyone who watches college baseball, but it seems like ESPN was giving the college World Series airtime. ESPN sucks real bad though, so I'll never watch it.

Was supposed to have four meetings today. Three of them cancelled on me and asked to reschedule for tomorrow. Do these people not get that I have my own schedule to keep to and that I can't just keep pushing everything back for their sake? And beyond that, that it reflects poorly on them if they can't show up when they say they're going to?

Dang it, I noticed that but was unable to do anything since only one post had been made since my last one. Then by the time I could post here again, I'd forgotten about it!
