My Algebra course has started on fields.

If I wanted to learn about fields I would have taken a degree in environmental science. :P

I was responding to Frdm, who said his patronus was a raven (I assume he found an online test or something). If you don't know what a patronus is, go read Harry Potter.

Never cared for Harry Potter. I'm more a Lord of the Rings guy.

I agree that an animal guardian is a solid idea, as for the happy thoughts to summon it. Yes it is a bit cheesy, but it was first mentioned in a book for 13-year-olds :P Plus when you consider that Patronuses Guard against Dementors who feed on happy thoughts, a 'happy shield' is somewhat logical :P

Anyhow this songis pretty epic

The Lord of the Rings is the best work of high fantasy I have ever read. I'd only recommend The Silmarillion if you don't mind dense prose, though. It's pretty tough going.

On a related note, I named my telescope Elentári. It's a nice name.

Sounds good. I'm going to go check out the series once I'm finished my current book: Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco. I love it because it has a lot of intellectual humour. :P

Also, you named your telescope Elentári? You sure you didn't get that inspiration from anywhere? It sounds familiar. ;)

It's from the Silmarillion. Elentári is the Quenya epithet of Varda. It means "Star-queen".

Not reading anything currently. I never read too many books beyond what I had to for school, so now that I'm no longer in school I'm just not reading much, period. I've read three books since finishing college two years ago.

I've read dozens of books for free on this awesome site: http://www.online-literature.com

The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring (which I've just finished btw) are actual printed books with color drawings however :P

I received the 50th anniversary Hobbit with a gold cover. After that I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I heard that the author of the Narnia series was friends with the author of the LotR series but neither cared for the other's books.

I also know a conservative Christian who lives with his family of four on a 4 acre property in the countryside who thought that satanic followers tried to influence C S Lewis. I said that the closest thing to that was the influence of LotR on his novels and that my friend plays LotR videogames and laughed too loudly to be polite.

"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... Now Larks, don't judge a book by it's cover! Or title, in this case.
