wha? Is 1366 by 768 an actual standard?

Isn't that portrait?

Yup. Take 1024x768 (4:3 standard screen) and widen it to 16:9 widescreen and that's what you get.

1920x1080 here, and apparently it's an LED-LCD screen (which no, I didn't know that when we bought it :P)

My screen is just normal LCD. Ripples when you poke it and all. Though it's pretty sturdy. You really need to press on it to make it ripple. Early LCD screens rippled at the lightest tap.

Of course, with a CRT monitor you can make it go nuts with magnets.

Oh, yes, LED display mines are similar to sugar mines. You often find them in the same geological formations.

I have LCD, but I rarely touch my screen so I don't know how much that matters.

I love the seasons changing in Japan. Almost every night there are 2 or 3 hour special comedy shows. Tonight is one of my favorites, basically a big karaoke competition, although the guests are basically d-listers. Still fun to hear them sing.

Can poking the monitor and using magnets actually damage the monitor? Or is that just a myth?

Since I don't feel like risking my monitor if you guys feel like damaging your old monitor to see if that's true be my guest! 17.gif

Magnets mess up a CRT screen because they deflect the electrons, but it shouldn't do any permanent damage. Other screen types shouldn't be affected, however keep magnets away from your laptop since tney can mess up your hard drive.

They'll mess up any magnetic storage device.

I find it interesting that after all portable media has moved to being either optical or solid state, most hard drives are still magnetic. What's preventing hard drives from using flash memory?

Well, for decent storage space you'd need MLC (multi-layer cell) storage, but that's only good for about 10,000 write/rewrite cycles. SLC (single-layer cell) has a life expectancy of 100,000 cycles, but with reduced storage capacity. Hard drives should be replaced every 3 to 5 years. I'm not sure how many write/rewrite cycles that is, but I would guess more than 100,000.

You could probably do it, but it would either have reduced lifespan or reduced lifespan (although less so) AND reduced capacity.
