If I had more time to come on I would have reached my 1000th post a lot sooner. I am getting there though...

To be fair, it was work you chose to do. :P

Work I chose to do in a previous stage of my life when I had a lot more time on my hands.

The problem then becomes, once I start, I can't stop...

Page flip bug is our friend.

Sorry to say this, but with the upgrade to the new forum software, the page flip bug does not exist anymore 14.gif

Although it will live on in our memories.

And in countless other threads, complaining about its existence.

Everyone between Hamish and me, fix your numbers.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

My parents' car reached 70,000km recently. I took a picture (don't worry, I was parked safely).

Yes, well... not having a 10ths place on your odometer makes that easier to do. I had only 0.1 miles (528 feet, or 161 m... at the speed I was traveling, about 6 seconds) within which I could take my picture, and there was no place to pull over where I was. So it was on the fly or nothing!

Fortunately, I have plenty of experience with using a camera while driving and can do it without taking my eyes off the road.

I had noticed it was 69,998 when I left home and was 70,000 when I reached the train station, which was where I was dropping someone off. So I didn't need to take my phone out of my pocket, get the camera function, line it up, and take the photo before it changed, I had plenty of time.

Considering I'm still on my P plates (provisional licence - between a learner licence and an open licence) this is certainly for the best. :P

you'll have to be prepared to take a picture of the odo at the next big milestone: 80085. Yes, I am just a big child.

dscn6440i.jpg

This one I was able to stop for because I planned for it and pulled into a residential neighborhood to hit it. And it was at night, so a picture on the fly wasn't going to happen.

Shame I missed 133.7, though...

They have a button to switch to miles?

I'm pretty sure that only cars manufactured for use in the US or the UK (and, in some cases, Canada) contain any mention of miles or miles per hour. There's no reason for it in a car that's never going to drive to a place where miles are used.

Ferrari isn't american, yet many have them.

There is a difference between "made in US" and "made for US". A Ferrari may be made in Italy, but the one you buy in the US would be made for US consumption and would be different from one made for European consumption. If you went to Italy and bought the same car, it would be in metric only. There are always variations between versions of a product sold in different countries. Regulations are different, language is different, consumer desires are different, etc.

Come on, you didn't seriously think that the whole rest of the world reads the little kph from the inside of their speedometer all the time, did you? :P

Look at this image of the dashboard of a European car sold in Europe (from Wikipedia):

800px-VW_Passat_Tacho.JPG

Engine temperature in Centigrade, fuel capacity in liters, speed in kilometers per hour!

The tachometer isn't in Hertz (hmm...), although they are using a more metric notation of "1/min" instead of "RPM".
