After I posted my last comment, I took notice that you hadn't posted yet Duke. It was right after that I figured that when you did post, it would be exactly what you just said. :P

In response, to me my pets are just another family member. I don't think about their lifespans or whatever, I just enjoy them while they're here. There's no guarantee that a newborn human will live to be 80 years old, they might just as easily die at age 3. (While yes, I do understand the chances of a person living to 80 are much greater then a dog).

Ah, I got what I was going to say. You need to take a few risks to get the full enjoyment out of life. You might be setting yourself up for inevitable disappointment by marring someone, because they're gonna die eventually. Does that mean you should never settle down with someone you love? Or have kids? I could go on, of course, but I think I've made my point. And it's shiny. Like a metal ball that was just polished. I could actually go for playing with one of those right now...OR maybe a shiny metal bell attached to a string! I honestly would love one of those right now, but...(cuts off rambling for your own mental protection).

    Yes, this is kitty.

I agree, pets are just another member of the family.

It's different, though. Assuming the person you marry is about your age, you only have a 50/50 chance of outliving them, and if you do, it probably won't be by that long. If you're 25 years old and you get a cat, the cat is going to die long before you do unless some tragedy ends your life early.

Besides, it isn't risk that's important so much as it is risk versus benefit. Settling down with someone you love is supposed to be a central part of being happy and satisfied with your life. A pet does... what, run around and shed fur? I don't see much that makes it "worth it". But that of course is in the eye of the beholder.

I've never really understood "dog years" and the like. It takes them just as long to go around the sun as the rest of us. :P

And yes, I do know that it is supposed to make their shorter lives seem comparable to those of people. It still seems a silly concept to me.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Isnt the world record for a cat 36? My old farm cat made it to 21 and its brother made it to 17. The 17 year old only ate and slept, so his guts went. Both had cat flu at age 1, and the 21 year old one had to be fed by syringe 3 times to get him back to health.

    Thank god for vets.

Also,it was a weird thing to have cats that you never knew as kittens.

I don't really have anything to add to the pets discussion. I wouldn't mind getting a dog here in Japan, but it's just so impractical. And my apartment totally has a rule against it.

Now I am eagerly awaiting some rockin' thunderstorms. Supposed to be the rainy season soon, although from what I've seen of Japanese rainy season it's not gonna deliver, and be disappointing as always.

Dog years actually don't go by that 7 multiplier at all. It's something slightly more complicated then that. At 1 human year the dog is about 15, at 2 it is 20, and then from three up you add 4. However, I think that is just an average thing. I did a quick Bing search, and it turns out it varies between different sizes of dogs.

All it means is the health of a dog compared to the health of a human. For example, a dog at 1 human year has developed (in physical ability and sexual reproduction) to about the level of a 15 year old person.

    And now back to school...

What the heck is with the weather this month? It's supposed to be sunny and getting warmer but instead it's been off and on rain showers and random thunderstorms.
