I'm slightly concerned about the fact I've only seen the Foucault pendulum outside the physics lab swing in the NW-SE plane.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

What's a Foucault pendulum? I love Chinese food. I played trumpet in high school for the marching band for three years, but was only in concert band one. I can't post from work because none of the schools' computers are equipped with easy, discreet internet access. Hm...

It's getting hotter and hotter here. It's getting to the point where I'm sweaty when I'm just sitting.

EDIT: Why do I always forget the number? It's the most important part of this thread, and I can't seem to remember it...

A Foucault pendulum is a pendulum that can swing in any direction. As the earth rotates, it is supposed to appear to slowly turn (anywhere except on the equator). It is not on the equator, so I should see it swinging in different planes from NW-SE at different times. But I don't.

Hmm, are you catching it at the same time every day or within a brief period of time? Both of those could cause it to not appear to be moving :P

I've never heard of that type of pendulum before.

Well, I've run the math and apparently at my latitude the pendulum would rotate 360 degrees very close to 4 times a week, or about once every 1.75 days. It would swing in the NW-SE plane every 0.875 days. The times I go there are 3 days apart, which is not enough of a spacing for it to make an integer number of half-rotations. Maybe they reset it at a similar time each day.

I think they had one of those at the Museum of Science and Industry when we went there. It seemed to be working right. :P Although..wait...I think that was one that just swung back and forth, knocking over these little blocks to show the earth was rotating or something like that. IDK, I'm not a sciencey guy. :P

But as far as your pendulum not working, it's just more proof that physics is a lie. I mean, when I jump off my house, I float up. Sounds like this "gravity" stuff is just a bunch of hooey to me.

I usually stay awake on trains, but I can't really get something to eat on the way back home because the dining car is usually packed with Oakland Raiders fans.

I don't know if Amtrak has dining cars, because I probably haven't riden it in years. In the furture, Fresno will serve the California High Speed Rail.

QR doesn't allow food on their suburban trains. I've never been sure whether or not that covers the Brisbane-Gold Coast intercity line. I'm inclined to believe it does, since the two are only an hour apart.

Amtrak has dining cars on the northeast corridor. One would logically assume they also do elsewhere.

People bring food on the trains (both subway and commuter rail) all the time in New York. Occasionally someone proposes banning food on the subway as a way of combating the rat problem, but it's never well received. New Yorkers don't like being told they can't do things and many blatantly ignore the rules if they are.

I haven't been on a train of any kind for a while. I guess most recently was last July when I was on the NY subway. But I haven't been on a proper passenger train for at least a good 10 years.

The Metra trains around here don't have dining cars here. But I figured that's just cuz they're just for taking people from the suburbs to the city, so they don't exactly need them.

It was daily for me a few years back, when I was going to school. Now I take the university's bus, unless it's the part of the day when it doesn't run and I have to walk the 2km there.
