At the moment? There is nothing interesting on TV ever.

95% true!

The few exceptions got names like "Arte" or something better known to americans: "Nat. Geographic" and a few more.

(The special thing about Arte is it's structure: 50% german, 50% french on air in both languages all the time. Their program is huge parts documentation, art and movies which haven't got that cheap action and effects of hollywood crap. oh... and... nearly no commercials.)

I don't even have TV service in my apartment. Nowhere near worth the 40 bucks a month it would be.

Ah, to live in a country with decent free-to-air TV, like mine.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I am a total sucker for the variety shows on every night in Japan. It's probably very low-brow entertainment, but hey, I enjoy it.

Back Stateside, I probably only really watch sports: Tigers, Red Wings, and any football I can get my eyes on. Oh, and Avatar: The Last Airbender. That show was awesome.

Well, we do still have free-to-air TV in the US, but you need to have an antenna on your building to pick it up, and my building doesn't have one. These days you only see them in impoverished areas since anyone who can afford it has cable or satellite.

That is changing, though. A lot of young 20-somethings these days aren't really into watching TV and are spending more time on the internet instead. I'm not the only person I know who doesn't have TV.

There are alota channels around here "free on air" but they're just crap. The private ones because they only use cheap trash TV to fill their afternoon programme, the state owned ones because they do the same and are politically influenced.....

After spending a long time not watching tv, I found I can't remember the channel numbers when I decide to watch a little for a change. Except the Weather Channel. That's been 16 for a minute.

The other issue with remembering the channels is that they change. When I was a kid Nickelodeon was channel 16. But then for whatever reason the cable company moved it to channel 41. Then, to comply with new FCC regulation requiring that like channels be grouped together, they moved it to channel 33.

And, of course, there's no consistency. DirecTV puts their channels in a completely different order from FiOs, which puts them in a completely different order from the local cable company, which puts them in a completely different order from the cable company in the neighboring county, etc.

And with hundreds of channels, good luck finding what you're looking for if you don't know where it is.

It's interesting. In Back to the Future Part II, the kids in the family in 2015 complain about how they have only 500 channels. In 1989, this was supposed to be funny. But today it's reality!

And that's the thing of it: any TV show that may be interesting can be watched by other means than catching it on TV, which is so much more convenient because you can watch it on your own schedule rather than the network's schedule.

TV Cartoon repeats: still annoying. I also hate some "free to air" television, but I do like Nat. Geo

My room has no way of connecting to the building's antenna, so I use an indoor antenna. Interference isn't too much of an issue, and even less of one for digital broadcasts.

It's probably still possible to use an indoor antenna in the US.

Finding a TV that has one, however, is a tall order. Don't think anyone's been making them in quite a while.

My grandmother had a TV with rabbit ears up until 1997 or so. From 1992-1996 we had an antenna on the roof with the TV in my parents' bedroom hooked up to it. Then we moved, no more antenna, so we got a second cable box.

Oh man, I'm actually old enough to have used rabbit ears with tin foil extensions when I was a kid... Every once in a while a conversation like this pops up and I'm like, "Oh my god, I could be some of these kids' dad..."

So far, all the places I've lived in Japan have antennas for the buildings, so we plug our wire into the wall and the picture shows up fine, no interference or nothing. We have 8 channels here (4 are Tokyo stations that broadcast most of the same stuff as the local ones), and they're alternately all watchable and unwatchable depending on the night and the guests.

You can get them separately and attach them to the TV. They're still made.

I should buy a set-top box when I go back to uni, the analogue broadcasts will soon be discontinued in favour of digital.

Digital started broadcasting years ago, alongside analogue. In the coming couple of years all analogue broadcasts will be shut down. So by that point I will have to buy a set-top box to continue getting much use out of my TV.

British/Australian English varies quite a bit from American English. They spell metre - meter same with centre etc. Neighbour is another one. Also the ones you listed. Either is acceptable for me. I've got a hd set top box. I live in Melbourne so analog goes off in late 2013 I think.
