    Skyscraper241: Love that area

Thanks, it is a nice area.

Sloppy182: Awesome college campus! Nice job!

Thank you. Glad you think so...it will serve. I will try to make an even better one somewhere else in the city.

Kj3400: Nonsense, that university campus looks so much better than mine ....And I see you have a lot of interesting buildings on the campus. Great work.

Okay, thanks, haha. Always critical of my own work.

Nathanthemayor: Wow!Maybe one day I'll go to that university . How long did it take you to make that giant street map?

Maybe, haha. The map is always a work in progress, the intial layout probably took a few hours gathering all the data views from in game, then stitching them together with HTML (and troubleshooting that), and then Google Mapping them takes maybe an hour depending on the size and complexity of the city tile.

Dfnva: Nice campus... I've been just working on a campus in a new city/region I've started, I may apply some ideas I see in your campus here.

    -Dan

Can't wait to see your campus.

Sim_link: Fantastic work - it looks like a very realistic university. Fantastic work with the arenas as well - the sea of parking is quite nice.

Yeah, amazing how much parking is actually required.

Schulmanator: You have captured the feel of the place well. Nicely done.

Thank you, I really like the feel of the intersection of 48th and Atkinson.

Benedict: Bravo - District of Wenzel is number 6 for 2011!

Thanks a lot to everyone who made the District of Wenzel the sixth hottest city journal of 2011! Next week I will be landing in China, so the update will probably be late.

    Update 49 - University Neighborhood

Today we look at the neighborhood east of the University of Wenzel - Martin. I also included some shots of 48th Street north of Oklahoma Avenue in the Uttica Creek Parkway neighborhood.

I am excited for you guys to finally be able to see Update 50 next week. It is a big one.

Like I said earlier, next week's update may be delayed or updates moved to a different day. Check out the District of Wenzel Street Map to get an idea where we are. Tell me what you think of the new map style (scroll down to the farthest south area of google map style).

skyscaper241: I think it's mnuch work to name each street, road and avenue.

It isn't much trouble at all for me. Actually it is one of the joys that keeps SimCity interesting year after year.

sim_link: Looks like a great area. The trees throughout the update look really good. Particularly like the 3rd picture and the picture of the high school.

Thank you very much. We are moving further out into a suburban kind of area, so trees will be a little more prevalent.

Well I am in China and still settling in. One problem I am having is that when I try to access this site using my VPN (so I can see the pictures from imageshack, etc) the site blocks me as a SPAM bot. If I can't see the pictures what is the point!? I'll try to update soon despite this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated...it must be this VPN (but I like it because it is free...)

Another super update friend. Each one is a pleasure to view and they inspire me to work harder at details. I hope you can solve your access issues. China appears to be much more restrictive of content than we are used to. Is there a local internet provider who might offer some help?

I didn't have any trouble with the previous two VPNs I used on prior visits to China, but they were purchased. This one is free, but the Simtropolis website blocks me when I use it. I am hoping Dirk has an answer, otherwise I guess I will fork over the cash to use the other VPN I used before, so I can see all your awesome cities too!

I am in Shanghai right now for teacher training and just walking down the street today has filled me with inspiration. Maybe the City of Martin will really expand its business district and get more towers. Obviously more tall buildings require far more sprawl of the smaller stuff. Alas, Martin is ever expanding outward. I hope to put in some serious build time this next year!

I plan on Update 50 being a sort of overview of the region from the beginning until now with statistics and pictures of the region as it has developed over the past couple years.

FINALLY! I have internet in my Hangzhou, China apartment. I have a new VPN, and I can access Simtropolis with it (see the pictures actually). I have been busy in the meantime completing more maps and updating the style of existing older maps. The City of Martin has also expanded westward along the Brittany River. Update 50 will include many pictures from the past and some stats on the City of Martin and the District of Wenzel.

Me too, your cj is one of the most realistic examples of city expansion I have come across. The google style map is a work of art in and of itself. Wish my regions could look half as good a this. One question, many of your parks have a cool grass texture, did you make the lot yourself?

Thanks for the compliment. I use a few different lots for grass. One is the ploppable farm grass lot (basic maxis green field), another is a filler lot for a bike path set, and the lower end looking grass is another filler lot for yet another bike path set. I did not make them myself, and at this moment and can't pinpoint exactly who made each set.

    vivapanda: I'm looking forward!

    It's coming!

Thanks, I can't wait for your impressions of it.

Simbourgeois: Very nice update! Coming back to the discussion about the street names, I think that it gives a particular touch to your CJ So keep up the great work!

Yeah, sometimes I can't think of names. Other times, I think of too many!

Simtropolis simply did not like the VPN I was using, haha.

skyscraper241: Looking forward the new update. Unfortunately I can help you with your problem because I don't know much about it, but good luck with fixing it.

Problem solved. Update is on its way.

Update 50 - The Big 5-0: Then and Now

It has been one year and eight months since the start of the District of Wenzel city journal. What follows is a mix of old pictures and new pictures of the areas. Also, I have multiple views of the region from various points throughout development.

    The region before men came.

    mRZWyz1.jpg

Men came and carved out many acres of farmland and founded the port cities of Martin, Hawthorne, and St. Paul on the Brittany, Penelope, and Christina Rivers respectively.

    PLtvqJj.jpg

Martin at the mouth of the Brittany River (which travels inland the farthest) has spread to its current form and is the seat of Martin county government, District of Wenzel government, and Wenzel National government. Hawthorne and St. Paul are poised for growth as suburbs.

    CQol0v0.jpg

    Very early Martin.

    CrUY7pf.jpg

Martin continued to spread west along the peninsula to the north of the Brittany River.

    CH63My2.jpg

"Old Town" today is home to the headquarters of a number of global companies, and also the county and district governments.

    fwnq74U.jpg

Martin has spread all around the confluence of the Brittany River, Bitter Creek, Orchard Creek, and Honey Creek. Only the East Flats remain undeveloped for now.

    zZeyPFw.jpg

The first river road, now District Highway 50, leads through many lush farms along the Brittany River.

    ifQr1t1.jpg

More farms south of the river along what will be District Highway 10.

    gHv6C0V.jpg

The pristine river and farmland with Martin Road Bridge crossing the Brittany River.

Near the mouth of Portland Creek, District Highways 50 and 230 intersect.

    WD0yoRS.jpg

    TV95zot.jpg

The Brittany River Road, now Brittany River Boulevard (D50) is surrounded by high-rises and workshops.

    BNwE2QF.jpg

A larger bridge spans the Brittany River parallel to a rail bridge. Now District Highway 15 runs along this stretch known as Grand Avenue north of the river and South Eighth Street south of it.

    n2xYYkd.jpg

Capital Square and Park, the seat of Wenzel national government.

    4tGsEbX.jpg

The intersection of District Highways 50 and 230 is considerably more developed and expanded. Municipal Stadium is nearby.

    1p1Y1X6.jpg

Now the simple intersection of D35 and D15 is now a complicated intersection of three major thoroughfares. National Highway 45 also piggybacks on Hawthorne Avenue (D34).

First off, I must give you a huge congratulations on 50 updates  , Thanks for being dedicated and commited

Now I must say that you have an abosolutely stunning regional view, it is definately one of the best I've seen.

Your cities are very realistic as well as your suburbs and farmland.

I also really liked seeing places before and after. That was really neat :)

Keep up this CJ, it is one of the best out there :D

Wow, that is an incredible update - my favorite of this whole CJ. I love seeing the progression over time. Love the diagonal el station - looks neat in that location.

[edit] Speaking of which, I'd still love to see a subway map....

[edit 2] Just went through all the updates to investigate your public transport system (with your fantastic map open in another window for reference]. So there are 3 lettered lines (A - light green, B - fuschia, C - brown) in your government district, then 5 numbered lines that are more regional (1 - red, 2 - blue, 3 - gold (or is it yellow?), 5 - orange, 6 - purple). Is the dark green line numbered 4? I don't think I've seen it mentioned specifically in an update. It would help if I looked at the update on this page - doh!

Congrats to your 50th update! It is certainly a spectacular one.

I love the way everything just seems to mesh in your region. Nothing seems to be really out of place, which is hard to achieve. Of course, your region views are spectacular. Getting a look at the region through the times is great for someone like me who hasn't always followed. Great update, and congratulations again! :D

Thanks a lot. Everything has really come together in this region. Some things I wish I had done differently, but all in all the results have been pretty good.

Benedict: Wow, that is an incredible update - my favorite of this whole CJ. I love seeing the progression over time. Love the diagonal el station - looks neat in that location.

I am very conscious this time around about taking pictures all the time, especially since I built all those farms. Who will get to even see them if I don't take pictures of them before I build over them all?

Adooxx: Okay, this is really briliant. Very good job, the region view is .. wow .. Such a realism, if I watch aerial views of my regiopn it looks almost the same.

    Big and awesome update btw!

I take so much motivation from city journals of yesteryear that I can't even remember the names of, but that were just so developed and beautiful. The recreation of Edmonton by JerseyDevil was a huge influence as was Mr. Beer's incredibly realistic looking region views.

Nathanthemayor: Wow what a big update! That's a bigggg region there!

Haha, the region is not as big as I would like, YET. I hope I can just keep working on this region for as long as SimCity is still viable. If you noticed in the statistics section, I only talked about Martin County (which is the main focus of this region, so far), but I wouldn't mind expanding farther and farther outwards into the District of Wenzel. I was just looking at Schulmania's incredible stats of replies and views and I said, "Why not? Just keep plugging away at this region and journal!" The only thing that could stop that is a catastrophic event leading me to lose my SimCity folder (but I have it backed up!)

Vivapanda: Congratulations! You and your region have been trough so much progression! Keep on going this way!

Thanks a lot. As many of you may or may not remember, I ran into a huge problem with my region around Update 27. THE DREADED PROP POX. It destroyed my entire West Town tile, so I had to rebuild it from a very early save point. Luckily, no other tiles were affected, and here we are at Update 50!

Sim_link: Congrats to your 50th update! It is certainly a spectacular one.

I love the way everything just seems to mesh in your region. Nothing seems to be really out of place, which is hard to achieve. Of course, your region views are spectacular. Yeah, I am so glad you think everything meshes. It has always been an important goal of mine in this region. Even with the farmland, since the game tiles are kilometers, but I use miles for my farm properties. Often I needed to plop fields on an adjacent tile to keep it looking realistic.

Schulmanator: Impressive pix! And happy 50th!

    Thanks!

GreekMan: wow! congrads! very nice work! another 50 more!

While compiling this update, I seemed to find so many things I haven't really shown you guys. Just these things alone could probably fill 50 updates, even if I don't continue the ever expansion of the Martin Metro area.

Rewright: Whew!! My circuits are overloaded. Looking at your regions shots encourages me to add in my remaining cities to add a sense of realism to the region. Your region is just fantastic and a real joy to view. I always look forward to your updates.

Looking at your cities inspire me too, especially to work on fine tuning lots and the little details.

Emperordaniel: Congratulations on reaching 50 updates in such an awesome manner!

It snuck up on me, but I had nearly a month to think about what I wanted to do (then I put it all together on February 12th! haha.

I am still overhauling and adding some maps to the Street Map. Keep an eye out on it as I upload more of it!

By way of a "Thank You" gift, we'd like to send you our STEX Collector's DVD. It's some of the best buildings, lots, maps and mods collected for you over the years. Check out the STEX Collections for more info.

Each donation helps keep Simtropolis online, open and free!

Thank you for reading and enjoy the site!
