Cheers art128. That big interchange is directly inspired by the shaftsbury interchange at newport in Wales: http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=51.603959,-2.986693&spn=0.006104,0.022724&t=k&z=16

sir_knight: Yes very interesting way of using that piece. I daresay that would look even more at home in the middle of a tight urban environment. The corner that your highway turns just after it is rather tight mind, I'd certainly not want to take that corner at speed xD

Owaen: Very considerate of your town planners to include that for your motorists lol. Being british I was reading that junction from a LHD perspective, where it made no sense whatsoever! lol

@asteconn: That's a great interchange! Pleasing to the eye as well. I like the use of tunnels - it really helps keeping the interchange look "clean".

Nice work-around you did there!

When the pieces don't fit, get a hammer... Then when you calm down...Use superglue and get creative!!!

@ Asteconn, I really like how you incorporated the tunnels into your interchange. Also, the interchange itself, is spectacular! Keep up the good work!

Victor Valdes; heitomat; DCMetro34; naftixe: thanks guys =]

This video is the first of my 2 new tutorials; and shows how to build a compact T interchange:

This video is the one where I actually go about building the full sized one above:

ROFLyoshi: You're quite correct yes. I don't think that the ANT (and by extension the RHW) has the ability to form tunnels.

@ROFLyoshi: If you're building your RHWs with medians, you can turn each lane into a one-way road to make tunnels as well.

Lots of trumpets.

Originally tried to shoehorn a cloverstack in where the two motorways cross; but there really wasn't enough room

@asteconn: Very nice interchange, with RHW tunnels and your use of efficiency, but who uses them?

But, well, here's my interchange between a railroad and a ground highway:

Here's another, involving a Downtown/CBD and an avenue tunneling through the cliff, with a sewage plant above it.

@asteconn: Wonderful interchange(s)! Great work. Still clean and realistic, and I love how the railway cuts through without interfering with road traffic.

@zahrul3; this city is still in development. I always start with building the most disruptive transit networks firts. i'll post a picture when the city is done =]

@heitomat: thanks =] getting that rail line to behave was rather difficult.

This is probably the most complicated highway setup I've ever made. It's the inner ring road around the city; directly inspired by the never-completed Glasgow Inner Ring Road from the 1960s. I wondered how hard it would be to create something as complicated as the GIRR in RHW. Suffice to say; it was an absolute mission! From start to finish I think this road took me about 12 hours to plan and build over the space of a couple of weeks.

Let's start from the west and go clockwise. West on all of these pictures is upwards. North is to the right. I've not finished the landscaping around the motorway yet so there'll be some empty ground around.

ALSO! I drive on the left. So when I'm refering to on/off slip roads, bear this in mind.

========================

In this picture, the main west-east motorway (MWE) comes in and interects with the inner ring road (IRR) at a T-interchange. The mainline of the MWE however continues underneath the city in a tunnel. To the south of the T interchange is immediately a roundabout interchange, which gives the primary route into the centre of the city from the west. Traffic can enter the city from the west here, but can't leave (yet).

To the north of the the MWE IRR T interchange is a single local on-slip, covering a movement not available in the next image.

Access to the roundabout interchange from the north is a little trickier. Because of the extremely close proximity of the MWE IRR interchange, a normal off-slip on the left of the mainline isn't possible (because the on-slip from the T interchange is there. So instead, the slip road peels off from the right just before the MWE IRR interchange.

At the far north of the shot, there is some intertwined sliproads coming from the roundabout, the T and the mainline of the IRR. This is where it starts to get a little clever and disorientating at the same time.

Riverdale-3Feb351258211021.png

=====================================

A little further to the north is another T interchange with the Secondary Northern Motorway (SNM) This is the reason for the tangled sliproads. Traffic entering from the MWE coming onto the IRR is most likely to want to carry on straight onto the SNM; whereas the traffic already on the IRR is most likely to want to carry on around the IRR. Defining the mainline here is a little tricky.

As it stands, the SNM was originally supposed to be the primary northern route, however, it only carries on for about 2km into the next city with 1 intermediate junction inbetween.

There is local south-facing access junction to the industrial area along the bar of the T; and another means to get into the city centre in the form of a roundabout interchange, and is the primary means to get into and out of the city from the SNM. This junction also gives a secondary access from the east.

Riverdale-24Jan351258210976.png

=========================================

Moving eastwards, we come to the Main Northern Motorway (MNM), which actually drives right into the centre of the city underneath this double-stack roundabout. There's a roundabout interchange where the MNM terminates inside the IRR which covers most movements. If you want to get out of the city going northwards though, you'll need to either get onto the mainline of the MNM a junction early, or use the roundabout interchange I talked about above (visible at the top right of this image)

You should just about be able to see a south facing local access diamond junction in the bottom left also.

Riverdale-11Feb351258211055.png

======================================

Continuing around the IRR, now going southwards, we come to what is probably the most complex single junction on the road. The mainline of the IRR peels off at this point to continue over the river as the MWE. This is where the MWE motorway also emerges from its tunneland crosses over the river. Again, this is a T interchange, with some local movements exceptionally close to it. Only the slip roads that continue on as the IRR can access the local junctions.

There is also a junction at the tunnel entrance that pretty much dumps all of the city inbound / outbound traffic from the east into a roundabout surronded by skyscrapers. The expanse of parkland here hints at something grander being planned at one point.

Because of the proximity of the junction to the river, the MWE from the tunnels has to be carried over on its own bridges until it can reach the other bank, which has space for them to merge into the mainline.

On the eastern bank you'll also see a local access junction with east facing sliproads.

Riverdale-19Feb351258211084.png

=================================================

Here the IRR is surprisingly uncomplicated. The Main Southern Motorway (MSM) comes in at a roundabout interchange here; which also provides one of the main south-facing routes into the city. Coming in from the south is problematic, because of the presence of the Old City (on the right of this image - you can see the central plaza, abbey and parliament buildings very easily.

Traffic is split between using the IRR / MSM junction, and the dumbell and diamond either side of it, for getting into the city from the south.

The dumbell to the west of the MSM / IRR junction is the primary access to the island and Old City, as well as leading to the city airport to the south.

Riverdale-23Feb351258211104.png

========================================

Lastly, here is the Secondary Western Motorway (SWM) / IRR interchange. This is the main way into and out of the city from the southwest. Yet another T, but with this one the mainline is easily discernable and it isn't too complicated. The tangle of sliproads to the north of it is from the proximity to the roundabout interchange from the first image. There are plans afoot to link the new industrial area to the west with the SWM at a limited access junction just over from the bridge.

(You can also see the royal palace at the bottom of the image)

Riverdale-24Feb351258211120.png

Lastly; here is a link to the road that inspired this: www.philip-harvey.co.uk/blog/images/GlasgowInnerRingRoad_EACB/glasgow10.png

@Jim 546: Nice airport interchange there. It should be posted on the Show us your airports.. thread, because it involves the airport. Your airport looks very regional

@asteconn: What are the dependencies and where are they from?

The airport is, you can see the interchange on the overview, and yes it is very much regional.

@Jim546: Everything looks regional, and it is. The highway is regional, the airport is regional and the surrounding areas are regional. Looks very good.

@asteconn: I'm referring to the RHW walls, your slopemod and your RHW overpasses, which I couldn't find with the NAM. Just tell me if it's a part of the RHW

@zahrul3: Nope; the slopemod and the walls are not part of the nam. The RHW overpasses are a part of the most recent (version 3) RHW though. In the transition bit of the menu you should find the ground to elevated parts. The slopemod is the BRF slopemod, which I like because it allows a lot of flexibility with the RHW. I use roads to flatten out the areas for sliproads and ramps, and rail and avenue for the RHW itself. The walls are the JRJ ones.
