You can make some roads one way, and the small avenue can have 4 lanes in one direction instead of 2 each way. The large avenue has options for 2 lanes each way, 3 lanes one way / 2 lanes other way, 5 lanes one way, 4 lanes one way with central median strip etc.

So they have included a lot of the features it sounds like. The highways are fairly limited but given the amount of space they take up...

Well L.A. would be a good example of a city existing for the most part on just roads.  Although I hear they're trying to actually develop an effective mass transit system to accompany those roads.  A little too late I say, but at least it's an attempt to fix bad planning.

Washington D.C. might suffice there too, and the same applies for Atlanta.  In fact any American City that largely developed after WWII suffers from over-reliance on roads.

Suffice to say Mass Transit is the least of CXL's issues, but it is one piece of the puzzle( and a big piece as to why I didn't buy).

Hey, Rikaelus, you from Minnesota by any chance?  That sounds exactly like Minneapolis9.gif

Back on topic, I think  the question of whether or not mass transit is necessary or not is a bit academic, it's clearly an option that many players want for their cities and it's quite disappointing to see it sidelined.

I figured it was the Twin Cities, too.  Mass Transit here, though would be great and it is slowly coming (but costs are high since our population isn't as concentrated and we constantly expand outward (where Cities XL has a limited amount of space to work with.

With regards to L.A.:  L.A. originally had a trolley/train system.  It currently does have subways, but certainly not as extensive as other major world cities.

And, opposed to LA you could come visit Boston and see how a small city with an enormous public transport system isn't the be all end all and that with light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail, busses and water taxis the expressway still needs to be avoided...

That sounds a lot like Houston to me. Classic American freeway metropolis (which is the only kind of city CXL currently lets you build), with useless/nonexistent mass transit and 6 lane roads going everywhere except the suburbs. Instead of a subway, we have have some 6 or more arterial freeways that cross through the city center and 2 ring freeways with another one under construction.

MC, if you are reading this, read carefully.

Promises are things that you can make sure will happen. One of your promises was to include mass transit in the game. Did you do that? No. We Solo players feel left out because of your PO (and money) obsession. You are loosing money, anyway, as only a small number of people will be willing to pay for the PO. Why couldn't you just stick to the Solo mode and make a game that could've really WOW'd us, that would be worthy enough to be compared to SimCity 4 (the greatest SimCity of all time!).

What I'm asking for is at least let us pay a one-time fee for the additional content, including mass transit. Or include it as an expansion pack. If you want money, that's the way to go. Please consider this before the Solo Cities XL is recognized as another SimCity Societies...

As I'm also only playing in Solo, my city gets to suffer because of the stupid Solo Trading

Mass transit absolutely should be in the SP mode - you're buying an incomplete game otherwise! (which I did)

The other alternative is to make PO a lot cheaper, like US$2/mth. They'd get a whole lot more people playing it then!

who's excited to pay for trains we've had since 1989? Anyone? If you thought $6 a month was frustrating, wait until you gotta pay extra for busses, trains, subways, etc! Forget that you can get all of that in a $10 game...but of course you'd be told "That game had years of community content built around it!" Yeah...trains...terraforming...more than one or two lot sizes...deep micromanaging and traffic simulator...subways...busses...elevated rail(like the pictures of such a thing they showed us during CitiesXL concept phase)...

i dunno, simcity fans must be spoiled, but then I look at what a 6+ year old game offers compared to what we get out of a game in 2009. It just doesn't stack up, the 6 year old game has way more features, depth and content, regardless of community downloads.  I didn't have to pay extra to get features we've had for two decades and got advancements in the series.

CitiesXL just feels like a 3D version of an old school city game asking customers to fork over extra for the modern day features we'd come to expect in a city simulator.

You should be glad they aren't making you pay separately for say... roads, or the opportunity to build schools, or even the zones themselves! I can imagine them saying: "Residential and commercial zones are shipped free with the single player game. Industrial zones are exclusive to Planet Offer subscribers." 3.gif I can actually see that working if all single players are forced to buy their industrial tokens from Omnicorp.

And perhaps some Monte Cristo executive reads this and a light bulb appears above their head. Maybe if I'd suggested it back on the official forums, MC would have found a new way to annoy people. 14.gif

Or did they just leave mass transit out of the game because it wasn't ready? When there were so many more important things to work on. At least they got their priorities right with the avatar system, eh? 21.gif

Ready or not, Monte Cristo spent years making promises on what they are going to have in the game only to change their tune about a year ago(when they started talking up Planet Offer) and now we have to pay extra for what I can get in a $10 game made 6+ years ago.

You don't call your game "XL" or do a city simulator without mass transit. Especially after the fiasco of Simcity Societies having only roads and the insane backlash they got because of it. Surely Monte Cristo knew releasing a city simulator with just roads wouldn't be enough. They DID show us elevated rail in the early stages of development. Are simcity fans just spoiled?

I have no desire to pay extra for content. There's no justifying it when a 6+ year old game does the genre better without nickel and diming the customer on features we've had for two decades.

Oh boy, I hope I didn't offend anyone with my post earlier. *sigh* It's easy to demonise MC, but it was only really to hide my true feelings. I feel that CXL will never be a perfect game. You're probably thinking "Well SC4 isn't perfect." I just sorta got bored of SC4 after the number of times I have started over because I didn't like my region. And now I'm bored of Cities XL and I haven't even bought the game! I don't wanna talk about it anymore, even though I check these threads every other day just to see if something interesting has happened. Time for me to move on, I think. I need to get away from all this CXL drama.

Ditto...the only reason I check the cxl threads is in the unlikely event MC releases a massive expansion pack within the next 3-6 months. Until then...well, i'll be spending my money, just not here.

In reply to someone else's comment, no, I would NEVER join planet offer for even 2 dollars...or free for that matter. I do NOT want my cities on someone else's server. Period. And a lot of people feel the same way I do.

I appologize, I definitely went off on a rant that's been done to death, I'm sure.  I just expected mass transit to make it to the actual final game, and not nickel'd and dime'd upon customers.

Considering they showed off elevated rail very early in the concept phase of CitiesXL;  Grant it, it was conceptual; Monte Cristo led us on to expect rail would make it to the final game in some form and while it didn't make it, we're now going to have to pay extra to get it.

I feel like this is going to really disconnect the community from downloadable content.  It will get to a point(very soon) where the community will be asked to purchase the GEM's/etc. in order to get the full experience CitiesXL has to offer.

Don't get me wrong, many mods/downloads require RushHour, but that was a full expansion, not a "pick and choose" what you want in the game.  Just feels like something as simple as mass transit and future GEM's will really throw a curve ball at the modding community.

Will there be enough people purchasing mass transit GEM's to warrent a lot of custom content by the community?  Feels to much of a "wait and see" to jump on the band wagon currently, and ultimately I feel like that is too much of a consensius around the Simcity community to think that this game will really take off the way Simcity 4 has.  It's going to require the community to invest in Monte Cristo's promises and vision.

Interesting dynamic Monte Cristo is creating, and definitely a pricey one.  I just don't feel like paying extra for trains when we've had a simplistic form of trains since 1989.  This kind of "duh" features such as mass transit in a city builder game should be free.

There are exceptional items.. there's an oil conglomerate office building, a kodak shop, and I think a farm bureau office, at minimum.

As for passenger services, there is no mass transit, if that's what you mean. Passenger service as a road stat is the human equivalent of freight, and is important for hotels, as well as office and tourism trade.

i have suggested to them to post more information on their website too...and referred them to this forum for all happy testimonials haha , hopefully if they do this they're will be more explanations for your questions

OK, this is really getting repetitive guys. I didn~t read the entire thread, but I imagine in 10 pages of comments there are at least 100 on how it sucks that there´s no mass transit and when it comes it´s gonna be only for the PO. Can´t you people think of anything else?????

One would think that a month after release you´ll get tired of repeating the same stuff, but obviously that´s not gonna happen.

I have a suggestion for you:

If you like soooooooooooooo much SC4 and think this is the definite city-builder of all times, why doesn´t somebody get to work on bringing SC4´s graphics to present day and somhow add a grid -free road system? Than you´ll be able to say with clean concience that SC4 is the best game ever.....

Oh yes, maybe because it´s gygantic work!!!!!!!!! Maybe because all you´re ready to do for your gaming experience is pay $40 once every 5 years and (if you´re a modder) play with it for the next 5 years. It has never crossed your mind that someone out there has worked hard on something and continues working even harder on the same thing, even though there is whining and cursing from all sides. You can´t accept the notion that this someone would like to get paid for the work he has done in the last years, while you were sitting comfortably in your chair, clicking after work/school....

I´m sorry if the post sounds harsh. Moderator, feel free to delete it, I just wanted to vent a bit.

Umm...this IS the Mass Transit Thread. What do you people think we are going to talk about here?

If you don't want to hear commentary regarding lack of mass transit in the game, I suggest you find a new thread.

Well, that's exactly it, it's lacking. After you comment on the fact that something is lacking for 100 times, don't you think it gets redundand?

Look, no offense, you surely have the right to talk about it, I just think the issue was exhausted a month ago. I read some info back in the middle of the thread that there is a chance of mass transit making it into single player as well, but nobody seems to be commenting on that. The entire last page is dedicated at demonising MC....

There was little disappointment when sc4 came out and as such - too many nails - its dead to me. There are just things that needed to be done that haven't and with the community they gave us over at cities xl, I would have expected further detail in their explanation rather than posts informing us when the much needed content is to be given... foot by foot I've stayed with them... but now at six feet they've nailed every nail in the coffin and it's dead to me.
