Not bad, not bad! Everything looks very logical and convincing, model-wise. I like the fire ladders.

One thing that's not done yet is some flashing on top of those parapet walls, and I'm wondering about the roof texture. For my taste, it has a too defined direction on it. This may be ok for walls, where water runs from top to bottom, or for streets, where car tyres leave their marks, but on a flat rooftop it looks a bit odd. IMO, the pattern on the roof should be more cloudy and undefined, and it shouldn't point in any particular direction.

T Wrecks: well if you look closely there is some flashing, however it blends in with the roof and walls quite a bit, try making it darker so it contrasts more. I agree with what T Wrecks said about he roof bitmap though, it really looks odd and illogical. Otherwise your textures are looking pretty good, I'll have to pop it into a SC4 screen shot to see how the hues match up, but you look like you are on the right track. One thing you might want o do is add some weathering and staining to the walls, like in the picture you posted (BTW, are the sides really plastered like that? I would have thought they were brick).

Definitely one of your better models, it looks like you are paying more attention to the details and, as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe would say, God is in the details.

Aaron: I'm not gonna lie, that looks really awesome! I think you picked a really good building because, personally, I like how the walls aren't perfectly straight and they have some character. Keep up the good work! (and, of course, listen to the other people, I agree with them too.)

Assuming no one minds, I invited someone in my French class that does a little CAD to come check out NYBT's thread.

On to the picture!

By the way, I chose to do Two Bridges for the next pack of buildings. This is 99 Madison Street. 'Case anyone was wondering.

As you can see, I haven't textured it yet, because I want to get some opinions:

1. What should I do with graffiti (red arrows)? Earlier I was methodically applying planes of graffiti one by one, but now I have the resources to just apply a massive amount of it. Does it look better? Worse? The reason I decided to look into the issue was because of this picture, but I'm up for ideas.

2. What do I do with roof junk? I like to have a roof densely populated with lots of little things, but I don't want it to look unrealistic. Keep in mind that I have satellite pictures I'm following. Lots of little stuff that more or less blends in when it's textured? Less stuff? What to do?

I think that's everything, I'm going to texture these now and then check your opinions later tonight or tomorrow.

Jumpthefence, nice to see more Chinatown buildings. 99 Madison Street looks good. If you have the resources than I say apply the graffiti. That's how it is in RL.

Here's some progress on the Flatiorn Building.

It's still far from completed. I need to finish texturing it (the roof textures are only temp), add details, then finally add nitelites. It'll be some time before it's completely finished.

Hanson: I like it already! It's going to look pretty great when you add window mullions and a roof texture!

(RE: 99 Madison St) It would be great if the graffiti grew or decreased based on age and crime in the area. But that's a bit much.. one day perhaps.

The new building is looking pretty good, I like the amount of graffiti on it actually. The only thing I'd worry about is getting your wall textures to look good. Right now one looks too pink, and the other looks like plaster (again). Try to bring out the brick and make it look convincing. Also, try making the details stand out more. The facade looks really flat considering how ornate and much depth the ornaments have.

Trust me, Antarctica is way better then Siberia. There is nothing good about that place, the sun doesn't even shine. In Antarctica, you at least have penguins and the Voice of God (aka, Morgan Freeman).

Oh, and I forgot to ask while I was rolling on the floor in sweet hysterical agony, what is Iosef playing on his laptop?

I was wondering, does anyone have a model of the Coney Island/Stillwell Av elevated station. Either the old version or the new one that just opened. I think it would make a nice EL terminal. I know this isn't the BAT request forum, but I' surprised t is not on the STEX.

biloxisean- Nope, noone has a model of that yet. A request in the BAT Request Thread would make it's appearance more likely.

So far it seems that I'm the only NYBT member with an up side down avatar. So I declare I'm special.

In my absence here I've been secretly working on the former WTC. The Twin Towers are almost done, and I'll post progress on them later. I couldn't resist to BAT them any longer.

Aaron: A loss is never a completely bad thing, you have been given a chance to start from scratch and really improve this time around. I find myself starting over on bitmaps all the time because the one I am using just refuses to look right. Generally, whenever I have lost things, the new one is always worlds apart form the old.

Although it's been a pretty good April Fool's Day for me. And to any Frenchy-Frenchmen out there: Je suis le poisson d'avril! Ils rient de moi.

UrbanLatinFemale/Alexis: I'll be honest, I wouldn't know where to begin. I might be able to make graffiti props based on crime (like the chalk outlines you see), but age would be difficult.

Todd: What would you suggest specifically to make the facade more charismatic? Scale the ornate details to 150% or so? As for the wall texture, I think I'll just add some brick contrast, edit some mortar texture plagiarized off the interwebs, and smack it on there in a way that fits. Then again, I'm not sure what to do with the mortar because it's hard to see it in Google Street View, and I question how visible it actually should be.

Anyway, JTF, if 150% works, then do it. My point is, the way gmax's lighting and scanline destroy the details just doesn't do these buildings justice. They are really ornate and beautiful, and the renders look like they are flat and featureless. As for the bitmap, take a look at Jasoncws blog entry on making a brick texture, sometimes you just need the variation of the bricks and not the mortar, in fact I usually make the mortar on my bricks very close to the value of the bricks (aka, not there). What would mortar be in meters, 0.02? I just used the process for one of my bitmaps, I'll send you a raw version if you want(can't remember if you have PS), you can tune the hue and contrast from there.

Iosef, haha, now you know! By the way, you can get some surprising discounts on MAX for being a student, or if you know some folks you can get hand-me-down licenses and such (autodesk cranks out a new one every year and people like to have the latest version). Same with most software ack~shully. But yes, having a job helps
