Forget playing Mayor or God for now, what do you do in real life?

I'm a student who has just graduated and I'm going to work as a Structural Engineer in September.

What about everyone else?

My job ends this week... I work in a school with the little kids. 3.gif

When I go to college this fall, I'm going to have a campus job, but I don't know what it will be yet.

Congrats! My recommendation is to get out of the office once in a while and spend a little time on the work sites with those doing the work, you will be a better engineer for it. What works well on paper doesn't always translate into feasibility in the field. The more insight you get, the better the finished result.

I am a career welder/fabricator, currently focused on heliarc (TIG) for a multinational that builds level- and flow-control products for petrochemical, biopharmaceutical, and nuclear applications. Not your stereotypical dirty, scowling, brute-in-leather type welding, but clean, sweet reverse polarity on stainless steel and superalloys like Hastelloys and Inconel. Half the time, I don't even need to wear gloves.

Right now I work with my step helping him move and install phone systems. But most of time is spent in school. If everything works out, I hope to become an astrophysicist. If not that, then I'll probably get a major in mathematics and teach math. Either way, I'm happy.

Currently, I'm a "Sandwich Artist" for the newest Subway in my town of 10,000 (all locations are quite small, though). This one has the advantage of being near the new Target store, and the newest convenience store, a Kwik Trip. One of the other restaurants has a Drive-Thru (halfway through town on the main highway) and the other is in a Shell station at the other end of town, by the high school. Interestingly enough, they are all owned by the same person.

I'm a "Consultative Sales Associate" for Sears.  I sell appliances along with overpriced extended warrenties to unsuspecting customers.  Hey, I'm the top sales associate in my region! 3.gif  I'm also a college student working towards my CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional).  I already have my CCNA.  I have also worked in Signals Cryptoanalyst and Counterintelligence for the US Army.

I'm studying Aviation Business at the University of Applied Sciences in Saarbrucken, Germany.

In short, this is a yet BA - soon to be MA aswell - study that combines industrial engineering with the acquirement of a PPL at the beginning and later on an ATPL.

The study part is of course provided by the HTW Saarland (german name of the University of Applied Sciences) and the flying part is provided by several european institutes (e.g. EAC, LGM, Sabena Flight Academy) and in close contact with the Cargolux Airlines International S.A.

It's a very new study, I'm part of the 2nd year only (so it was introduced in 2007) and starts in winter semester only, whereas usually, studies start each semester.

And I can tell you this: It's a hell of a lot of learning (for the current semester only, I'm very close to printed 6000 pages) but it's aswell sooooo much fun, you wont believe it until you see it yourself! But hurry, application phase already started and soon comes to an end 2.gif

Funny thing is, at my university, you're required to do structural engineering in order to be able to specialise in Transportation. So that's what I'm doing. 3.gif

Currently, I earn $40 an hour, six hours a week, working as a part-time interpreter. Sadly the job is about to finish, so I'll be unemployed after that.

For now I'm service in the army, I am fortunate to be in the 11Mountain Infantry Battalion of the of the Brazilian Army, which is a division of specialized infantry. The life is difficult, but the things I do here I would not have the opportunity to do as a civilian, in addition the base where I serve is only 5 km from my house, so I can go home after my turn, which is almost always in the night.

It probably works different at different schools. In December I'm getting a degree in Civil Engineering, period. Which of course involves having taken classes in structures, geotechnical, hydraulics, environmental, and transportation alike. Although they do offer a separate major for Environmental Engineering (same department, though).

Specialty is then really more a matter of what feild you go to work in or, if you go for a master's degree, what you focus on in graduate school.

Having a masters degree in the field would be awesome, since then, as your title, you get to call yourself...

    MASTER OF SCIENCE!!!

Sadly, it would likely have to in due course be replaced with the far more boring "Professional Engineer".

Now, they would kill me, but that would bring to much attention to the insane stories I tell my friends and family.  Now, if what I knew were just lies of our government then they might be inclined to end my life.  Cause that just good thinking! (and that's ladies and gentlemen is just another term for counter intelligence 10.gif)  You might think I am kidding, but I'm not!  And I agree with 100% of what the government is lieing to you about.  OK, maybe only about 90% of it!2.gif  But seriosly, you have no idea!38.gif

goes and stands in Duke's and SA's corner...

I have a BE and I use it to spend ungodly amounts of money building roads. I'm not sure whether that makes it life imitating art or art imitating life 42.gif

And ours works differently again 2.gif

For 1-3rd year all Civil/Structural and Environmental take the same classes (which means you can swap between the courses easily if you change your mind on what exactly you want to do.) In 4th year the courses are still almost the same, with only a few differences (e.g. we structurals did some FEA and extra Structures classes, Civil did some Coastal Eng. and Transport Eng. and environmentals did some...environmental stuff).

In fifth year, to get a masters (which I've done) we do very different stuff. Structurals looked at Earthquake Eng, FEA B and some Stress Analysis, as well as a large design project in which we had to design a composite steel/RC highway bridge. Civils do some more water stuff, another transport module and a project to do with providing SUDS to an existing inner urban settlement. Not sure what the environmentals did, some water quality control stuff AKAIK.

And, when we finish we get either a BEng or MEng depening which course you were on, not a MSc ^^
