i wanted to create this page to speculate what will wright will be creating...

i assume that with the mind this man has and the games that he has concocted that the stupid fun club could be my new maxis folder

he has yet to announce his new games, but looking at their site i hope it is some sort of procedural game that simulates life (better than spore did) working from the ground up like sim earth (bacteria to robot civilizations) only pretty and allowing the user to build their own civilizations (say bird colonies.. ant colonies... fish... any life form... and even human life (from cave men to future races))

anyway thats what i think will is hinting at with his secretive group

if im off... then you still all know my wishes

however i want to know what you think is going on in the mind of will wright...

Probably a new SimCity but without calling it that, so EA doesn't get on his tail.

sim earth awesome!! i was hoping spore was going to be sim earthy... not just coloring planets and flying around the universe...

i would like them to combine sim city and civilization with a sim earth-like pop-up interface for adjusting things like you could with sim earth...

will is always talking about god games

Ahh the good old days when Maxis was having fun and I was importing all of my SC2000 cities into SimCopter. I hope Will is going to go mad and bring out the best game ever. Maybe Sim Universe and build your own Star Fleet to defend you galaxy.

Of course, I would like to see SimCity 5 (or another name), but I think that he wouldn't create this game one more time.

SimCopter is a great idea, bit I didn't enjoy this game.

I remember goofing around in SimCopter and Streets Of SimCity a lot. And boy, were those two games were as buggy as hell (especially the latter)... nothing compared to quite a few others, but sheesh.

Heh... if you clicked on that chopper with the cursor, it would go down and crash. I remember doing that a lot. 11.gif

In response to the thread in general, no one really knows what he's going to do next.

I played Streets of Simcity. It was fun but the annoying bugs kept messing me up. Now I play a weird spectrum of games from Simcity 2000 to Star Wars Battlefront 2 (and of course Simcity 4.)

Hopefully he bring out something fun to play like the Maxis of old...

or the video game industry of old...

Well, I certainly wasn't expecting this from ol' Will. 22.gif

(It's old news, sorry if this was already posted)

Will Wright prefers high sales to high scores

Will Wright prefers high sales to high scores

Author: Joe Martin

Published: 8th September 2008

Will Wright deliberately set out to make Spore as casual as possible, focusing on sales more than acclaim.

Will Wright's Spore came out late last week and players were finally given a chance to sample the full game, which has taken more than eight years to develop and suffered from being classified as vapourware again and again.

And what did most people think of Spore? While initial opinions seem good, there does seem to be a growing opinion among hardcore gamers that the game is perhaps a tiny bit shallow and casual for their tastes. That's certainly part of the conclusion we came to in our nine-page Spore review.

You know what though? Will Wright is fine with that, saying in a recent interview with MTV that Spore was envisioned from the outset to be a more casual game than people might expect. The reason? He wanted the game to have huge sales, not just huge critical acclaim.

"We were very focused, if anything, on making a game for more casual players. Spore has more depth than, let’s say, The Sims did. But we looked at the Metacritic scores for Sims 2, which was around 90, and something like Half-Life, which was 97, and we decided — quite a while back —- that we would rather have the Metacritic and sales of “Sims 2″ than the Metacritic and sales of Half-Life," said Will.

It's an opinion we can certainly understand. The world has a good number of excellent games which have been hailed by games reviewers such as ourselves, but which have struggled to sell well because of a percieved too-hardcore appeal. Just look at Psychonauts or Beyond Good and Evil.

quote>

Totally agree with the last paragraph.

Will Wright hasn't been involved in SimCity since SimCity 2000.

I think SC fans should forget about Will Wright.  He hasn't been involved in a while.  Maxis hasn't been involved since SC4 Deluxe, and now, the genre as a whole is moving away from EA, towards other companies.

Too true Tekindus, I know a lot of people complained that SC4 was too hard, but hey, I don't think it was hard enough. That's fine if you wanna make a kiddy-game like SCS for casual gamers, but there is a HUGE demand for a complex city builder that will leave cocky mayors crying in a fetal position in their office in Sim City Hall.

Big whoop. The main concern for him before anything else is to be successful in sales. Surprising...41.gif

I think that he needs to evaluate his theory.

Because in the end a high rating game is due for a high amount of buyers and a good shelf life. SC4 is a highly ranked game and has beenon the shelves for more than 6 years and it still hard to find it for less than 20 dollars! The general theory with this is Greating Reviews and Receptions + Promotion and publisher involvement = Good Shelf Life + High Sales = Great Game. I think that EA needs to take a look at SCS and Simcity Builder and then say to themselves. "Is it worth it making it mediocre game and it going to the BestBuy junk bin early , Or do I want a game that will last for years and years just like SC4. " EA seriously needs to look at this community and others to see that there are still many devoteed to SC4 and many are waiting for the next step. If they fail to see it then it's their loss. Plus SC4 wasn't too hard. All people had to do was read the manuals, I did it when I was 10 years old! I'm 16 now and I still remember the basic stuff. So the game isn't too hard. It's just too complex for some lazy people

A lot of people are not into slow moving, low action games. They want to play grand theft auto or Halo since there is a lot of action. I enjoy both style of games and could never really understand the hate for sim type games among my friends, but it's all a matter of taste. I mean, look at movies today and compare them to movies of the past. There is a lot more action in today's movies. We have technology to thank for this, but it also has to do with the fact that people get bored very easily today. We want action, explosions, guns, saving the babe, the whole nine yards! SimCity never offered that. Instead it's like the Rubik's Cube. Everyone had one, but only a few people actually bothered to learn how to use it.

Personally, SimCity has got to be one of the greatest games I have ever played, if not THE best. Though it will be said to see the franchise of SImCity go away, I will accept CitiesXL with open arms and an open mind.

That is the doctrine of EA anyways - simplify the game to maximize sales. Sadly, they do not make games with a great deal of depth and real substance anymore.

CXL is a false prophet, in my opinion. Monte Cristo has made it clear that its an MMO, not a true "city simulator".

At one point (1995?) Will said that he wanted to make something in which (and I'm paraphrasing) "you could take a software and use it to create a car, and place that car in a world, and there'd be different software all interacting together". It was intriguing.

I totally agree with you Jasoncw.  Take for example on the actual SimCity 4 website.  The site has not really been updated ever since 2004 or 2005.  The only thing that was updated this year on that site was the copyright.  I love SC4, don't get me wrong and it's my favorite game, but the only places that keep SimCity 4 and in fact the whole frachise alive is Simtropolis, SC4 Devotion, and other 3rd party websites.  I think that it's a shame that EA and Maxis have just turned everything to profit rather than actual gameplay.  These gaming corporations know that when you break the Security seal on the case of your game, you can't even return it, unless if you sell it on Ebay.

Everyone keeps waiting for sc5, the next good game.

The problem is, it will never come. SC4 is a good as a game can possibly get. Never again, at least in the city builder genre, are we going to see a game that 6 years after release still has a community. We have become so used to SC4, and BATting, and CJs, that everything else seems foreign and not "as good". You can make a game with prettier graphics, better road angles...but you can never make an overall better longer lasting game.

Sounds vaguely like Streets of Sim City, doesn't it?
