Thanks again for the tips and I am eager to give it another go now :-)

Will have to post again soon

You're welcome - I'm already looking forward to seeing more from you. :) I noticed yesterday that there are also some pretty good inspirational pictures in the "Show us your before/after shots" thread.

Westington Town

My most recent project, this is a small town located at the western edge of a massive region. The main regional highway comes to an end at this spot. From here on there is only a small mountain road that traverses hundreds of kilometers of snowy mountains through tunnels and passes to reach an isolated farming community up in a hidden mountain valley.

As you can see, I recently discovered how to make perfectly round streets... which is awesome! I love it. Allows for some eye-pleasing layouts.

There is a commercial district situated right outside the highway on the exit ramps, easily accessible in both travel directions. There are shops, parking lots, plazas, gazebos, parks, sports facilities, bus stops and everything a commercial district needs to thrive.

The town consists of six residential neighbourhoods each with their own central parks and services, and a main central commercial and high density residential hub where the towns main services are located. There is also a small market where locals buy fresh produce from the surrounding farms (which I still have to lay out).

Here's a larger picture I stiched together to show you the surrounding area. There is a  nearby indrustrial complex which the mayor hopes will attract high tech companies due to its high quality services and amenities. From here one can take the West Pass mountain road to reach the distant High Valley (little street leaving the industrial block to the left into the forest. Further down the road and a safe distance from town there lies the dirt industry sector, near the power plant.

Please let me know what you think, sharing these with you all is half the fun for me! Any ideas and criticism/suggestions are more than welcome.

Feel free to request images of details you would like to see, and don't hesitate to ask any questions.

Alright, that was my pre-development screenshot run.. time to click play!

Definitely creative; I'm a big fan of the gorgeous residential layout.  The highway ending/commercial district is confusing though.  Before anything else, basic SC4 gameplay suggests that the commercial district should be between the residential and industrial.  Ending a 6-lane highway with a bottleneck design like that doesn't really make sense to me; the exit ramps are certainly original but I think you should come up with some different approach.  Right now it would be a driver's nightmare.

Thank you very much for the feedback.. The town has been running for a while now and I've ran into several problems... you see I'm actually pretty new to simcity4 gameplay as I've spent a LOT of time learning about mods and how to use them and it has been great fun but as you can see I'm not an expert on how things actually work out. Right now I have massive unemployment problems, and my industry is not developing even though there is demand.

The highway exit is ment as a very remote last part of a highway but you are right in that it looks wrong transitioning from 6 to 2 lanes in such a short space, I think I will have it continue on as RH2 at least halfway into the next city and hold off for 4 and 6 lanes until the urban mass requires the extra carrying capacity.

At the moment im working on the next city highway connection with a view to maybe create more residential areas and hopefully get that industry going in the first town... any advice on this or pointers to tutorials on this are appreciated.

Hi Kingtai

I like the idea, but not surprised to hear you had problems once the gameplay started. Mapping out before starting can be great because you can build that one perfect place, but I am learning with SC4 that natural growth and responding to the RCI demand is key.

How did you do those lovely round streets? I want some of those today in my new town!

Thanks and good luck and let us know if you cure your towns problems.

It's getting kind of hard to believe things are going to get better. I've been drowning to long to believe that the tides going to turn.

Success simply consists of getting up one more time than you fall.

Yes indeed! That's what I've learned from this experience. Will be developing things differently from now on.

The streets are made with the NAM installed of course, you can find instruction on how to do it in the Nam Manual.

It's fairly easy once you get the hand of it. Basically you cross two 4x3 L shaped streets at the short end.

Here's a screenshot for you.

It took me a while of practice to be able to make the circles perfectly first try.

Excellent, thank you very much.

The sheer multitude of functions and complexity of SC4 and NAM together and all the available Mods is staggering and sometimes some things are missed and I missed this.

It is a wonderful game though.

I hope your town is developing better now. I like the idea of a town at "the end of the line" so to say, but as has been suggested, maybe the highway should finish earlier and the first part of the town the majority of residential.

Now my morning will be filled with circles.

Thanks again.

I have spent a good couple of hours making wonderful quarter circles, but that is that! Getting past that first stage is so difficult, I just don't understand how to get to a half and then full circle.

I thought I was pretty smart, but then I started playing simcity 4 with NAM and now I know I am not smart, haha! It is so complicated on so many levels.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble, as I said its not that easy at first.. let's see if I can figure out a walkthrough. Should not be too hard...

Lets see..

First you draw a 4 x 3 street. Then you do it again crossing the first one as shown in the screenshot from previous comment, at this point you have a quarter circle, now, instead of pulling out 4 more for your next quarter circle, extend the street just 2 tiles this time before turning, and repeat for the last one..

Meh I am not good at explaining, here's a picture tutorial... hope it helps.

The picture tutorial is fantastic, amazing!

Thank you so much. I have now made my first circular street

I really appreciate you taking the time to put that together for me! Amazing. Now I just need to incorporate into my upcoming small town and post, hopefully in the next day or two.

Wow, Hotel Wolverine sure seems to be the dominant hotel chain there. :P Or are you using the residential version?

It's funny how your large cities are full of skyscraper BATs whereas the small rowhouses are all Maxis, too. :D Anyway, the rows are looking good, so I'm not complaining.

The layout of the main road with one smooth curve and one sharp 90° turn plus that little office building inbetween looks somewhat strange, though.

It's looking good, but you know what? I think the marina in the first picture protrudes a bit too far into the river. Why not place it in that little bay and move the ferry terminal to the spot where the marina currently is? I think it would make more sense to have the marina out of the main river and the ferry terminals as closely together as possible. :)

The small town of Forest Township. Note that if you notice what appears to be missing roads/streets, it's because it's a little glitchy. It was hard to get a good picture due to that.

A small medieval town which has lasted all the way to the present. This would not (largely) have been possible without Wallibuk's BATs and his recently released Slovak/Hungarian smalltown set. There are a few small kinks but otherwise it is good enough.

Dear sir/madam/whoever will read this!

This profile is now defunct.

Computer problems and issues with accessing my Imageshack account meant My SC4 CJ Scrapbook was lost and utterly irretrievable. This setback put me off SC4 for many months.

Apologies for the inconvenience and for the lost pictures.

But that SC4 itch did not go away and it had to be scratched! I have started afresh with a new account here- The British Sausage

The URS is a spiritual successor to the SC4 CJ Scrapbook.

With this update this will be the last time I visit my original Simtropolis account- admin/mods feel free to remove it or do whatever you need to do. I have no further use for the Ln X (BLANKBLANK) account.

Very nice! Are they all plopped?

Yes, everything was plopped and every building was a landmark. Otherwise they would be abandoned.

Nice small towns guys. I love small towns and watching them grow outwards in the game.

Here's the biggest settlement in Garton which ironically enough still fits in here as it only has 3-4k pop.
