New Arlenes: Ten Thousand Wishes

Schulmania’s East Coast is back in operation! Our main port facilities on the Devonshire coast were taken over by remain occupied. We have had to funnel naval and commercial operations out of one tiny port in East Atkinos for several years. Now, with the annexation of The Northlands, Schulmania has outflanked the enemy and established a significant maritime presence on the coast once again. The first city on the mainland in Mookimia is the city of New Arlenes, located in the southeastern corner of the New Arlenes district and abutting the Occupied Zone. We are not hiding from the enemy. We hope the enemy will try to guard its extended northern flank against our defensive moves, weakening their position along the main western front near the Devonian Mountains. New Arlenes is both a strategic military base as well as our new premier commercial port of call for the Schulmanic Ocean.
 

The Imperial Mookimian government has minted this copper medal to commemorate the establishment of this district. They look forward to the town’s promise being fulfilled.

To help this new port quickly become successful, Chancellor Mooky has given special dispensation for some unusual arrangements for New Arlenes. First, since the port needs to be commercially viable to aid in trade and building the coastal economy, the Chancellor has declared the city to be a Free Trade Zone. This allows foreign non-feline businesses to operate here as they would in their home countries. A designated zone for the foreign businesses has been set aside along the waterfront.

Second, to further increase the port’s activity, an industrial zone with seaport has been built in addition to the standard Schulminion facilities. The seaport will be operated by contractors from VAN Enterprises and foreign non-feline industries will be allowed to build facilities in the zone as they would in their home countries, subject to domestic regulation.

Third, as a sop to the foreign commercial and industrial presence in New Arlenes, a limited number of motorized vehicles will be allowed for use within the city only. The pool of motorized vehicles will comply with standard motor vehicle rules in Schulminion vehicular zones:

1. No vehicle may leave New Arlenes
2. Felines have the right of way; drivers must yield to feline pedestrians
3. The speed limit is 10 miles/hr (16 km/hr)
4. Vehicles must stay on paved roads only and must keep right
5. Drivers must obey all posted road signs and advisories
6. No vehicle may be started or operated if a feline is sitting on it or near it
 

The 500 authorized vehicles will have one of these license plates attached

Fourth, to increase the city’s vitality and integrate it into Schulminion society (as it is quite far from our other cities at the moment) the Mookimian government has authorized the construction of a first of its kind facility in Schulmania – a convention center complex. Mayor De Purrton hopes that it will bring in plenty of business – both domestic and international – to jump start the economy.

Lastly, the Schulmania National Military and Bureau of Feline Affairs Military Command have made New Arlenes the new command headquarters for the Eastern Theater of Operations in the Queensferry War. There is a military base and an airport for both military and civilian use. Our national carrier, Nyan Airlines, will fly from here to other Schulminion airports and perhaps overseas.

Time to explore!

We begin with the international commercial zone – named “10,000 Wishes” since it has so many things you want to but – and for Schulmania Volume 2’s 10,000th reply milestone. This reply was made by Simtropolis’ own  Lyhoko Leaci, who won the privilege to designate six SimGoober buildings to fill the space. Congratulations to Lyhoko and let’s see the area in question.
 

I am eager to see what they do with this area!

Starchitect U. Will Pei designed a fabulous centerpiece for the zone – a massive observation tower and casino – both firsts for Schulmania. The SimGoober businesses will flank this massive new edifice. Let’s hope the casino will draw in the high rollers and laissez les bontemps rouler!
 

The Great Scratching Post is the tallest building in the nation. And its design has inspired many others around the world to build similar structures.

International businesses are busy setting up proposals for this new area. We’ll soon see what places are selected for 10,000 Wishes. The governor has established a preference for restaurants and hotels to go along with the casino. I wonder which ones will move in. While we wait to find out, let’s head a little more to the south along the waterfront to the site of New Arlenes’ convention center complex. Also a first in Schulmania, this cluster of buildings and its promenade are sure to be a big draw for the city.
 


Let’s check out the fabulous waterfront convention center complex, owned and operated by the New Arlenes Convention & Visitors Bureau. There’s the Convention Center, itself, the arena (naming rights are available to feline companies… we are waiting to see who wins the bidding war), the exhibit hall (naming rights also available to feline companies) and an oceanside promenade. As an added bonus, a marina provides a recreational focal point and tourism draw to the complex. A rail line services the area as well.

Cat food importers bring in exotic flavors from Port Matthew sushi arrives fresh daily. Busscastle Chocolates and scratching posts await shipment around the globe. It’s a busy place.

And now the military area. It’s a crucial component to weaken the enemy’s hold on the Occupied Zone. The army’s VI Corps will now be based from here, as will two divisions of the BFA Military. A contingent of military aircraft will be stationed here as well. A lengthy overland rail line parallel to (but well north of) the border of the Occupied Zone will keep the area well supplied in the face of enemy blockades and attacks.
 

 

 

So, ready to head back to the Ten Thousand Wishes retail complex? It’s kind of a long name, so the area has been given the nickname “10K” by the locals. So, when you say you’re doing a 10K, you’re not running a race in New Arlenes; you’re going shopping, dining or to the casino. Let’s see the SimGoober selections made by Lyhoko Leaci. There are two additional ones – a Petco for felines to buy supplies and of course a Starbucks. After all, is there any city without one or ten of them??

The slot machines in the casino are very generous. You can pay for a fancy steak dinner in the casino restaurant after just a few minutes at the slots. Trust me – I did!

Mayor de Purrton headed right over to Petco after the grand opening of 10K. After stocking up on Fancy Feast and bouncy balls with jingle bells inside them he headed next door to the Waffle House for a breakfast of chipmunk hash with pancakes and homestyle taters. That’s good eatin’!

 

Mayor de Purrton and his family are staying in the penthouse in the Wirdle’s Paws Hotel whilst awaiting completion of the mayoral suite in the city hall, whose construction is almost done. Better not use room service though… they charge a LOT!
 

The Best Western chain now has a franchise in Schulmania, as does Red Lobster. Not many felines eat lobster (at least not yet) so we’ll see how they do. But, plenty will come for their very nice cheesy biscuits.
 

And of course a Starbucks. What’s a city without one? Is there even a city without one? I think the highest concentration of Starbucks I ever saw in my life was in Melbourne’s CBD. There were 3 within a 1000 meter radius of where I was staying. And another two not much past that radius. I made ample use of their wifi…
 

Next door to the Coral Essex is the Double Tree Hotel. It has great ocean views and a deluxe scratching post in every room so you don’t have to ruin the furniture.
 

A new taste sensation in Schulmania is the Texas Roadhouse. Meat is always a big seller, so they should prosper here. Mayor de Purrton’s sister bought the national franchise rights to Texas Roadhouse for Schulmania. So, don’t be surprised when this enterprising you lady is opening one in your neighborhood soon!

His Imperial Carot, the Almighty Bunny Keilon Furr Neikobons I of Melikan, declares that following his successful visit to the country in March of 2012, and with the establishment of a Free Trade Zone in the newly-built city of New Arlenes, he now wishes to formally establish relations with the Felinocracy of Schulmania.

My advisers are now collecting recommendations for the official flowers and trees of the three newest Schulminion regions: Hornisse, Mookimia and Mookimian Verà. If you would like to have input into the selection process, you may submit your recommendations here with the guidelines listed below:

1. For each suggested species, provide the common and scientific name as well as a picture.
2. Hornisse requires selections which are native to temperate,mountainous areas in the mid-latitudes
3. Mookimia requires selections which are native to areas including (but not exclusively limited to, but similar to)northeastern or northwestern USA, eastern or southwestern Canada, UK, France, Ireland, Benelux, Australia (non tropical), New Zealand
4. Mookimian Verà requires selections which are native to colder climes, including (but not exclusively limited to, but similar to)Canada, central Europe (includes Germany, Switzerland and Austria), Scandinavia, Russia north of 55 degrees north
5. Each selection requires an explanation why it would be a good choice for a feline nation

In the event that two or more recommendations are accepted, a vote will be held to make the final selection. In the event of one accepted recommendation, it will be approved summarily. If no recommendations are accepted, the regional governments will announce their arbitrary choices. Entrants may offer recommendations for the official tree and/or flower for one or more regions.
