Salt Lake City, a Recreation

I've been wanting to do a recreation for a long time, and I think I'm finally getting good enough to do one. I wanted to do a fairly large city in the mountains. Salt Lake City, Utah looked like a fun one to do, because of its size and fairly easy layout (no diaganal downtowns!) and it's proximity to the Rockies. Also, this is not my map, I downloaded it off the stex, it's blade2k5's. I've only done slight modifications.

Salt Lake city is the capital of Utah. As of 2000, it has a metro-population of about 1.3million.

I want to get all major roads and freeways as accurate as I can. I won't however, follow the exact layout of each suburb road. My goal is to get the 'feel' for the city, and create the most realistic region I can. (Go easy on me, I'm not native2.gif)

Lets get started!

Overviews

Satellite view- I still need to fill in about half of the top map (all large) with plop water (Great Salt Lake). I just need to suck it up a prepare for the boredom lol. As you can see I'm mostly finished with 1 large city tile and most of the International Airport. I'm also finished with all freeways and have moved on to arteries.

And a few suburb shots in West Valley City, the current tile I'm working.

A small college in the area.

One thing I"m not totally satisfied with is the Ground texture. I can't find anything a little more 'deserty' than the real desert mod, and Salt Lake is wetter than that. Any suggestions?

This will take a while to do (9 by 7 large tiles I believe) but I have a lot of time on my hands because I broke my leg pretty bad. Updates will be slow with school coming to a close, but should pick up again in mid June!

Hey, cool! I grew up 35 miles south of Salt Lake City and am very familiar with the area. Only recently did I move away. This looks great so far! The downtown pic you've got is way old, there's a lot of newer skyscrapers and buildings that aren't there, but I'm sure your SC4 representation will be up to date.

Great stuff. How did you get your suburbs to look so fantastically homogeneous? I want suburbs like that. I'm a big fan of the region. I've gawped at SLC on Google Earth many times, and I even began a stylised version of my own for SC4. I look forward to future updates.

PS: Ouch!

So, what happens if I am off from the CJ section for 2 days? Right, another recreation is plopping up lol !! Very great work! Not only on the mountains (which look awesome btw), but also with the suburbs, very realistic! Lucky you that you don't have too many diagonals in it 2.gif . Well, looking very forward to more, you have a very promising start,

sorry to hear about your leg, but take care of the rest,

lucky7

Great work! I live about 40 miles North of SLC, but grew up there. I can't wait to see what you do with it! Too bad there are any SLC specific BATs, like the Mormon Temple, or Conference Center.

Great start, love the mountains, I guess the suburbs are realistic enough as most folk in US cities drive to work.

Wow, the suburbs are... Superb! They look just like salt lake: they go on forever. (P.S. Are you going to recreate the City Creek Center?!)

Looking fabulous! I really like the ground texture wouldn't mind that for my own stuff. Mountians look fantastic and your work on the suburbs is superb. Keep up the great work, hope your leg heals properly.
