Is getting the NAM worth it?

What are some of the pros and cons of the network addon mod?

Is there any chance by adding this to my game that I mess up already existing cities?

What exactly is inside of this addon? For instance, In some of the wonderful screenshots I see on here, I notice sunken highways with roads over passing them. Is that something that comes with NAM.

Is it more of a cheat, or more of an enhancement? I read the readme that comes with it, but it doesn't seem to explain a whole lot.

well, I'll answer the question in the topic's title with one word:

definitely!

to go on:

1) To me, there're only pros that come with the NAM, but this is a rather personal question.

2) as far as I know, you can't mess up existing cities. you have to rework the transit network tho, in order to take full advantage of the NAM's optical changes

3) Depends on which overpasses you mean. There's a hell of a lot of changes and new pieces that come with the NAM, I honestly can't list right away... One point that makes it worth getting

4) hm... a cheat or an enhancement... an optical enhancement for sure, a performance enhancement aswell, but a cheat... well, depends on how close-minded (no offense) you define "cheat"... the NAM has some settings to choose from, ranging from slight changes to very radical changes in commute time and pathfinding. Depending on how you make this decission (via installing), you might consider it as cheat.

Me, personally, I think the NAM cleans up the mess the programmers did with the transit network. IMO, they set the values too low, and the NAM gives you the possibility to get these values to a more realistic level.

I hope this helps...

well, its not like your paying for it, and it didnt mess up my cities when i installed it, so its definetely worth it.

if you had to pay for it, there might be some value in finding this stuff out, but i think with the current NAM nothing will go wrong and it is Definetely worth it.

Sounds good guys. I'm gonna download it. I was a little curious about the change in transportation philosophy though, do subways still go from town to town, and are highways the best way to connect cities still? Could you imagine if there was a subway running all they way between New York and Boston? Now that would be a real Big Dig.

By the way patriots, I live in Cambridge, MA and have got a few of your BATs. I noticed you make a lot of buildings from New England and would love to see you make a Fenway. As for the Patriots, why don't they just give us the title now? I wish football season started this weekend, this is probably the best Pats team yet!

What is this blasphemy! 32.gif (LOL 3.gif)

Of course the NAM is worth it and I'd reccommend it to anyone, it does a lot of good to the game, it improves the transportation system, it's just great!

i cant think of any cons except no pre-included ground light rail (glr) stops. The nam includes lots of new onramps and interchanges and elevated roads and an elevated version of the railroad network. there are even roundabouts! i give it a 9 out of 10--it would be a 10 if the el-rd, glr, el-rr etc. were draggable instead of puzz pcs.

Is breathing good for you? Yes, get it. The best thing to happen to SC4 since Rush Hour.

I just have a little question.

Is it possible to build the elevated rail over avenues? It's strange that you can build it over roads and streets but not avenues.

My opinion: the benefits outweigh the risks.

I will point out one problem with it. It causes a high amount of game crashes. As in Nam peices . Elevated over Road peices. and Ped tiles . Along with elevated rail and underground rail.

But It allows commute times to be alot better than they used to be ;3

I now agree with the majority here that likes it. I got it, and have been using it the last couple of days, and I'm loving it. Thanks for all of your opinions.

NAM is probably the best mod out there. Definitely worth installing. However, I caution against using the various traffic-mod options in it, like 2x commute, 2x speed, 2x capacity, etc. Those are definitely big cheats, and will remove much of the challege of SC4K. They also have the potential for destablizing your region.

If you use the cheats, make sure you know what the impacts will be.

if you re-run the NAM installer, you can select the perfect pathfinding option under the traffics plugin files (you'll have to expand the traffic plugins it to find the pathfinding options).

just in case you don't know, information regarding the ANT Plugin (and the other options available with the NAM) can be found in the documentations folder.

    my documents -> simcity 4 -> plugins -> networkaddonmod -> documentation -> contentsfile

there's also an images folder which gives pictorial instructions on how to create certain transportation networks. as for what the ANT plugin does, here you go:

"This item can be found in the Highways Menu (if the appropriate file is installed - see Installation Instructions). The reason it has been placed there is because this tool, while it is fully integrated with all the other [above ground] Network Types & can & does carry traffic, it still lacks the ability to allow for building development/access directly along its side unfortunately. This is the main reason why this tool has been placed in the Highways menu. Think of it as a limited access road/highway; or a service road, slip road, or alley-way."
